I think the big reason for cheap inkjet printers is that companies make most of their money on cartridges. So they give you the printer cheap and hope to make money on cartridge sales. I don't think the quality has dropped.

<< anybody have experiences w/ Epson rebates? How long does it take?? >>

My rebate for my 740 took about 7 weeks. Epson seems pretty good about paying their rebates.

I thought this was kind of funny - the press release from when the 860 was released less than a year ago. $279 at the time.

Press Release from 10/4/1999

<< Half-full cartridges??? >>

I thought only Hewlett Packard did silly activities like this.

fr,
Epson, unlike HP, doesn't market ink cartridges with different capacities for the same printer.

Great deal, thanks! I live pretty far away from an OM, so the $10 difference between that deal and this is insignificant.

Just made my purchase through Onvia using the coupon and PointClick. This costs roughly $10 more than the OfficeMax deal, but they are out of stock in my area, plus the hassle of driving there as well.

Great deal. The carts are interchangeable with the Epson Stylus 740, so if you already own one of those printers, this is a great time to upgrade.

Ovia has price protection against your purchase and their price decreases. They don't pricematch others. However, if you used the AMEX Blue Card (like I did), they have price protection! I'm going to contact them tomorrow and price protect me from the $115 to $79 price. I'll see how it goes, first time using their price protection feature. This could be really sweet deal, $115 price protected to $79 - $25 (Onvia coupon) - $50 (Epson Rebate) = $4 total!

I bought mine from Onvia also. But, I really had to fight with myself to not go out and get another from OM. I have two sitting in boxes now! So many printers so little worth printing.

Here is the "Pricematch" line from Onvia. Basically worthless to us at this point:

<< Does Onvia.com offer price protection?
Yes. You are covered by Onvia.com's price protection for 30 days from the date your order is processed. If you make a purchase from Onvia.com and later see that we've significantly lowered the price on our website, simply notify us! On all changes over $10 we will refund you the difference between what you paid and the new price. Contact us by email, at priceprotectionUSA@Onvia.com or call us at 1-800-331-2822.

First of all, the deal with Office Max was A SCAM. They admitted to me that all they have to do is have one of the printers at that price, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID. One of their clerks told me that it was intentional fraud to get people to come down to their retail stores.

The price at Onvia is 119.95 PLUS TAX. The $25 coupon from techbargains works, there is free shipping, so the printer is $55.31 after the rebate. If you're in a state other than Washington, you can save an additional $10.32 more since they should not charge the sales tax in another state.

BTW, there is some auction on Onvia for the black ink cartridges for the 740/860 at $8 each. I don't know what the shipping is.

Has *anyone* gotten this at OfficeMax for $79 as per their Sunday ad? The ad mentions "Save $50", but doesn't say anything about a mail-in rebate.

I think I'm going to refuse shipment on my Onvia order and try to pick one up at OM. I didn't really need this printer anyway, but I'm addicted to a good deal. :-D If I don't find one at OfficeMax it is no biggie.

Just got my printer from Onvia yesterday. Very nice, extremely quiet, quick, and the output compares most favorably w/ my more expensive Epson 1200. A great deal for $40. I have a local OM store, but prefer having it delivered to my house rather than bumping elbows in line in front OM for an extra $6 savings. I am very jazzed about this deal

DO NOT get it at Office Max. Rebate will not be honored! Toll-free number on the rebate form. Ask for yourself.

I received my 860 today and I must say that the quality is really bad compared to my HP 930C. Text is fuzzy unless i print at 1440dpi and at that resolution it's really slow. Oh well I guess that $40 for a printer can't ask too much.

Double whammy from Onvia: a few days ago they raised the price to about $120 (from $115). And now they've pulled the $25 coupon.

Best bet for a hot deal on the Epson now is to get an OfficeMax circular (which shows the $80 price and doesn't say anything about rebates, in-store or otherwise) and pricematch it at Best Buy or Circuit City. At least there, you get the rebate from Epson.

Ultra Wide: I don't know why you are getting fuzzy text. The text on my 860 is really sharp and crisp, even at the lower resolution. The printer is MUCH sharper than my HP that this replaced. Photo's printed on this beast are really nice (especially when printed on photo paper). I'm very pleased.

ultrawide...I agree with Bob...the text quality of this printer is great (even at normal quality)...something is wrong if it appears fuzzy

bob61 and davisdog would you mind sharing more information about your settings if you changed anything from the default. also what kind of paper are you using. I don't know why mine is fuzzy, to be more specific the ink bleeds a little and the edges are not sharp like a laser printer, looks like it has spraying.

thanks

ultrawide...out of the box (standard setting that favors speed over quality) and on copier paper I stole from work is all I'm using for word documents...also did digital pic on photo quality paper with quality setting and it looks great...the quality of this printer is at least (I say better) than an HP930C...might try the cleaning function in the printer utility to see if it improves...also might try colored text to see if its something from the black head thats screwed up
