Inspired by IeraseU's comment in this thread.

Do you guys all have your equipment insured? I have some real money invested in equipment right now. From quick Googling it seems there is much confusion on this issue, and it seems there is a significant difference if you shoot for personal or commercial reasons. I do a little of both. Any suggestions where I should turn to for insurance?

Thanks.

most homeowners policies cover your camera stuff, however getting some insurance for the expensive items isnt a bad idea

I am not a homeowner.
Also, I would want coverage when I travel with my stuff, for theft, etc.

I have a policy for mine through State Farm. It covers everything from the body and lenses to the camera bag. As I get new lenses, I just take the receipt in to my agent and get it added on. It's not expensive at all.

Edit: Make sure you get a policy that covers the cost of a new replacement, not the actual value of your equipment over time.

Yes, it's called Personal Property Insurance that attaches to my Renters Insurance Policy with USAA.

Is it part of or added onto another kind of policy? Or is the policy just for your gear?

It's called Personal Property Insurance as CPA said, but mine is a separate policy not attached to anything else. When I first got the policy they said that sometimes they ask new customers (I've had auto insurance with them for a long time) to bring in the actual equipment with the receipts. I think I started out with about $2500 worth of coverage for around $35 a year, not sure what the exact coverage is up to right now after adding more lenses to it, but it's still less than $50 a year. Again, this is at new replacement coverage, not actual value.

I thought you needed Personal Property Floater insurance? The floating covers the equipment no matter where you are in the world. Some insurance plans limit you to areas around the house. Be aware!

Just checked my policy and it's called a Personal Articles policy, not personal property, if that makes any difference.

jamesbond007, when I got the policy I told them I was going on a vacation and wanted something that would provide coverage when I travel. They said this would do that. I guess it's something that ThePresence should ask about though just to make sure.
