Erase HDDs A Quicker Way?

Hey All...

Please excuse the newb question here. Is there any way to erase the contents of a hard drive without actually hooking it up to a PC? I took down a system which had three SATA drives with a blown mobo. I wanted to clear out the SATA hdds, but since I do not have another mobo (with SATA), I think I am stuck.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance, folks.

Just get a cheap SATA adapter. Only around $20. There's no other way to get rid of the data than using software like Eraser or crushing the drive with a steam roller or trip hammer. You could use a stand-alone drive tester/cloner but those cost as much as a PC...

Agreed you need a program that will zero out the hard drive completely otherwise the data can be recovered with a few off the shelf programs.

I saw video tape erasers on ebay for like 40 bucks its basically a super magnet that you need to plug in ...not sure if it would have any affect though...just seems cool

You can recover data with off-shelf software?? I didn't know that... I thought you had to take them to an expensive lab for that kind of work. What are some examples of these programs? I am bored and curious about what's on my HD's empty space

Don't use a magnet unless you want to destroy the drive.
I use UniversalBootDisk to zero write the disk.

I have partition magic 8 installed, and I found under Delete Partition there's an option for "Secure Erase". That should be sufficient for making data recovery impossible, correct?

Active@ undelete or Uneraser(for pure DOS) can be used to see if the erased data can be restored. IMHO theese are the most powerful data recovery tools that can restore maximum data. Give it a try to see what can be restored.
