Error loading OS

I have a computer that's about seven years old. I was transfering some files to a new external hard drive then i shut the computer down come back the next day turn it on and i get a "Error loading os" message. is there a reason why i would get this. i hope it's not the hard drive i replaced that about 2 years ago.

Did you move or copy files? If you moved files, you may have moved some system files accidently.
Have you tried Safe Mode yet?

The pc could be trying to boot from the external drive. I believe the "Error loading os" message is coming from the bios.

You didn't mention OS, so assuming Windows XP, try the repair capability on the cd after disconnecting the external drive.
