I haven't followed any instructions or changed any settings
I'll take this HDD, run a benchmark connected via SATA, then do another test connected via the USB 3.0 dock again, it's just a shame I can't transfer directly to the enclosure via eSATA. Don't really want to get new enclosures just because of this that have 3.0 on them. I can't be bothered with the USB 2.0 on them anymore. I use this drive to copy videos for watching on my media player, it's just too time consuming at USB 2.0 transfer rates.

eSATA seems to have a dark secret about this honeymoon phase where eventually the controller cards fail. The MSP I work at has deployed to clients mostly fire-resistant external hard drives for disaster recovery and eSATA is the preferred connectivity choice because as you discovered, transferring hundreds of gigs at 25MB/sec is not an overnight task. Every. Single. eSATA card has failed; Silicon Image, Marvell, ASMedia, all from different vendors. In search of a reliable component, these have proven to be a far better option as long as you have free internal SATA ports:

Otherwise, the only card that has not given us any problems is not just an eSATA card:

With a breakout.

So, let me ask you guys something because getting a hold of the vendor on Amazon is proving difficult. I got this card (sorry about the Amazon France link but the specs are pretty self-explanatory), and I can't figure some things out. I've got Molex powering it and a SATA cable from the card to the mobo.

1. I don't know how to find out which driver is the appropriate one. How do I find out the model? I know it's an NEC chipset.
2. Just checking, but having a Molex jack means this card HAS to be powered by Molex, right?
3. The two USB 3.0 ports don't want to work at all. Why will the esata work but not the USB?

(...sidenote just to go back to the eSATA for a sec, Teracopy tells me I'm getting approximately 60 MB/s going from eSATA to an internal SSD. Doesn't that seem slow?)

I got a whole new eSATA PCI card and took advantage of the opportunity to get some USB 3.0 ports on their as well. Everything working fine, I just haven't done actual bitrate tests yet but it seems very fast indeed. At least far better than before.
