eSATA HD recognized but not Accessible

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum! ? (and I?ve already got a problem)

I have a 750GB Samsung Spinpoint F1, in an Antec Veris MX-1 that I formatted via the eSATA cable on my brother's computer, a XP Pro-SP2 box. After taking forever for the drive to format, I backed up my files and shut everything down. The next day I could only access the hard drive when I connect it and restart the computer. If I connect it with either the eSATA or USB cable without restarting, nothing happens. Not a problem I thought when I took it home, I'll just need to restart my computer when I need the drive.



Unfortunately I can't access it on any computer I've tried, (2 laptops, 3 desktops running on XP home all the way to Vista). The drive will be recognized as new hardware, and I can see it in the Device Manager, but not in Disk Management. I even tried removing it from the enclosure and hook it up directly to a computer. This resulted in not even finding the drive in the Device Manager. I took it back to my brother?s computer and it works fine if I connect, then restart. Could this is be a jumper problem, or the fact that I formatted the drive externally? Any help would be appreciated.

By the way this drive was formatted on an Intel D865PERL mobo, (not sure about the CPU though).

Since you formatted the drive on your brother's XP Pro machine, and it only works with his machine, you may have formatted it dynamic instead of basic.

Check the drive format.

If I connect it with either the eSATA or USB cable without restarting, nothing happens.

Unless the proper SATA drivers are loaded (AHCI), hot-swapping won't be avaliable on your SATA ports and the drive will have to be hooked-up and powered at boot to be used. However, you shouldn't have that problem with the USB connection and hot-swapping should be avaliable.

This is all just a guess and I'll give ya your money back if I'm wrong! :laugh:
