I never play MMOs, but the sci-fi setting is tempting. Any of you guys played it? Is it any good?
EVE Online is not just good. It's very, very good. It's pretty much the best MMORPG I ever played. Many people say it's boring, or too complex, but that happens when they only play it for a few days. EVE is a game you really have to get into to see how awesome it is. I don't know about others, but for me it was indeed a VERY complex game to get into. It requires understanding of math, lots of patience, and it requires you to do A LOT of reading. There is no hard copy instruction manual that I know of, but there's plenty of guides and info on EVE's forums.
When I first tried EVE I found myself very frustrated, when I found out that I should actually CALCULATE things when fitting my ship so that I can actually hit something with my cannons. I had to understand things like trajectory, velocity, distance, projectile falloff, explosion radius, and transversal velocity and factor all that in when buying ships, selecting weapons, and fighting people or NPCs. The math required here is probably not very complex for an average joe, but I was always terrible in math. Not because it was hard for me, but because I hated it. I just hate math, and I always hated it as long as I can remember myself. AS soon as I understood just how much calculations and understanding of game mechanics is needed to successfuly ake down those pesky pirates waiting for me everywhere below 0.5 zones, I wanted to quit right there and then. I thought: "F This! I want to play a game not learn complex things!"
Lucky for me, my reading skills were always excellent and I have tons of patience... so I read and read. Slowly it all started coming together. I learned that the universe is truly gigantic, with hundreds if not thousands of solar systems, and on top of learning how to hit something with my cannons, I also have to learn how to be a good navigator, use the map and my onboard scanner. I then learned the craft of a miner, and got my 1st Hulk... Then I got into trading, and lost 200million in assets to a ganker who exploited the game and blew up my trading ship. I later tried my hand at missioning, and bought an ultra expencive Raven battleship... I finally got into 0.0 "ratting" which I found very dangerous and exciting. Good times...
Unfortunately I had to stop playing this game because CCP eventually made it impossible for anyone without a job to play. EVE "used to be" the only MMORPG which you could play for FREE, despite it having a monthly fee. (Well playing for free was a job in itself, but that's beside the point. )
There is so much diversity in EVE.. So much to do... You can be anyone from a sneaky covert ops character, stalking and shadowing your enemy to a devious, greedy trader manipulating the market and stripping people of their hard earned credits... You can be a pirate, grieving people and stealing their stuff, or you can be a "self proclaimed" policeman hunting the scammers and the grievers.
If you decide to try EVE, play it for at least a month, before yo make your verdict. That's the only time when you can say that you like it or not. And don't even think about playing this game without reading and UNDERSTANDING the player guide on EVE forums. You have been warned.
