With Drone Interfacing IV, Battlecruisers IV im guessing medium drones will do twice as much dmg than the artillery, and you can get to tech II drones much faster than tech II guns - they are just kinda annoying to use sometimes.

And its not obvious but the skill Electric Warfare Drone Interfacing (or something like that) adds 3km per level to drone range for some reason

Good advice. I think a lot of new players (myself included at one point) really look at big turrets and get excited about damage and then let drones go by the wayside. Drones kick ass.

Yeah, drones do rock, i'm definitely a fan of em now. thanks for the advice Lake, and welcome to Anandtech, that's the 2nd new member in this thread

How do drones perform in PVP? gonna guess pretty well, except against smartbombs...

oh and ooc, since cap draining is a powerful tactic in pvp, how do Amarr handle that? just don't use lasers?

Drones can save your life in PvP - EWAR drones can add an extra bonus to a gun ship that you might not be able to include on your DPS fit

And cap draining is a problem and a tactic - support ships can and do act as cap batteries for DPS ships

Best thing to do is try and not be cap dependent - which is a damn tough thing to do

How much DPS do you need to be able to tank to solo level 5's?

I've got a cap stable shield boosting 81% across the board resist Vargur with 618 shield defense, but I can bump it up to 515/1082 shield defense without being cap stable. Might even be able to up the EFT quite a bit if I drop some gyro 2's, but I sort of like the 900 DPS it does currently.

Drones are pretty effective in solo and small gang PVP. A competent drone user with Warrior IIs can generally destroy frigate tacklers and drive off interceptors. In fleet combat they are kinda mediocre because by the time a handful of Hammerheads or Ogres can get to a target they have probably hit you with multiple salvos (from their ships with gun bonuses). Since getting targeted by a large group of players at once (being "primary") will melt a ship in seconds waiting around for your drones to return to your ship before you try to warp out is a luxury you usually dont have. Missiles are also considered a bit underwhelming for pure fleet combat as they dont hit instantaneously either, but Drakes, and Cerbs especially are popular and dangerous PVP ships. Stealth Bombers however are still pretty stupid.

You dont see Smartbombs super often in PVP, especially fleets. Occasionally people will try setups of multiple battleships fit with smarts to take out carrier-borne Fighters because those things are like 20 mil a piece.

The cap thing with lasers isnt that bad - usually the Amarr ships have (some would say waste) a ship bonus lowering the cap usage. If things are really tight you can switch to standard crystals to keep firing, as crystals approach one extreme or the other (range or damage) the cap usage goes up.

Nosferatu (energy vampires) got nerfed a year or so ago so they arent nearly as common as they once were. In small gang PVP a neut-ship is still pretty dangerous, but they arent the solo death machines they used to be. Many PVP fits (not just lasers mind you, but often any active tank) bring along cap boosters which use those large energy batteries like ammo giving you quick jolts of energy, which is usually enough for your average combat engagement.

Queuing? Or do you mean offline training?

Also poking my head in this thread for the first time. I got a 6 mill ultra newb caldari mission runner. Currently dinking around in a Caracal in lvl 2 missions. I got a fairly solid base of 5/4 learning and +4 implants from just saving my money up. My current goal is a drake with tech 2 heavies, eventually I'd love to be in a nighthawk.

Unfortunately I'm not really playing with anyone I know, I was in a corp with some friends but they all stopped playing so I don't know anyone in the corp anymore lol.

This game intrigues me, yet every time I get into an MMO, I regret it.

Do you play with a joystick or KB+M?

Looks like a truly epic win for the Goons... EVE encourages metagaming, and in a stunning example of it, the Goons apparently convinced a disgruntled BoB director to close the Band of Brothers alliance after kicking all member corps. This means all sovereignty dropped after downtime earlier today, and both Delve and Querious are up for grabs. Cynojammers and jump bridge networks no longer work due to the loss of sov, and supercapital production is no longer possible. Even if BoB reforms as a different alliance, they have to start almost from square one.

From all appearances, this looks legit and within current game mechanics. I suspect it'll stand.

Mostly mouse, though advanced players typically use a combination of keyboard and mouse. Realizing I could ctrl+click to target something rather than right clicking and selecting lock made my entire year when I discovered it.

EVE is a beast unto itself. Let me jack what I posted in the "MMO Itch" thread to better describe how I feel.

I just evolved to more "mature" MMO's. Been playing EVE for almost a year now off and on. If work or life throws me a rough spot, I can drop the game entirely for a month or two and still make constant character progress when during the time I was away for when I return. Gone are the days of scheduled raids 3-5 nights a week, where others relied on you to be there and commit to a second non-paying job in a video game. In EVE, I progress as fast, or slow as I feel like it. I have zero pressure, and if I really want to I can spend half my day at work watching the market and making money purely by toying with buy/sell orders. Then go home, run missions with the girlfriend, or pewpew in a 0.0 roaming gang.

The beautiful thing is, if I just don't feel like it, nobody is going to cry to me for not attending their roam. I was a MT for a top 10 US Horde WoW guild for almost 3 years - missing a single day would have gotten me SO much shit it's unbelievable. Simply amazing pressure.

With EVE? Zero. I do what I want, when I want, and how I want. And I can still make a name for myself doing it.

As I followed the story this morning, it took me to Goon's boards... there's was an interesting postulation:

I wonder if CCP is going to find some sort of mysterious table error and have to "roll back" the server a few days...

Knowing CCP, and the fact BoB was their in-game pet... I wouldn't put it past them to do something of the sort.

I run L4 missions in Tintoh for Caldari Navy. Hit me up in game if you'd like to come along. I can tank just fine but extra dps is always nice. Char's name is Kwanaioo, and I'll be running for most of tonight.

Edit: Actually, I just moved down to Amarr space to do l4's there

I wouldn't put it past them either, but if they do then they open up a whole new freakin' enormous can of worms.

yeah it's for real guys don't worry

Lame war against my corp now...3 active WT around, they destroyed 2 cruisers on their way to docking at our main starbase (molden heath region)...probably 10-15 of our players camped the station for hours, eventually catching one of them. The next day they caught a few players running missions, then we apparently got another of theirs...then they docked up again for a while.

I come on last night to hear two are active, and now there's a neutral pilot flying a damnation and assisting them with fleet boosters. The neutral sits in dock range of the starbase, one or both of the WT undock and immediately warp to a bookmark the neutral set 1000km out. Then they warp back to the neutral pilot, destroy a battlecruiser and dock at 50% armor.

That's it, that's been the war so far, lol..better than the last one i guess, which was against a solo player...

Gave the 14-day trial a go last night. Seems interesting. Didn't get much past what I believe was the newbie missions for the Gallente Navy, and amassed about a million creds.

I'm still very unsure about exactly how my guy would fit in long-term. Do most players wind up specializing heavily? Mining/manufacturing seems like a good bet, if not a little boring.

Most players do end up specializing in one field at first. That's the best way to ramp up your cash flow. Once you've essentially peaked cash flow in your specialty, then it's typical to delve into other areas, often on a seperate character (you can only be training one character at a time on any single account). It'll take a couple years at least to really specialize in a given field. Longer if you're working on corporation level capabilities (whether that's flying capital ships, or aiding in their production and use in some way).

The Alliance I am in, Chain of Chaos (NAWTI), made it to the final 32 of the Alliance tournament. You tube now has a whole bunch of videos from the tournament and the finals should be going up soon.

You can see the various Eve trailers and the tournament fights here:

http://www.youtube.com/ccpgames

You can see me and my guys destroy a team in this video. I was the catalyst that blew up in the opening seconds. <grin>
