I guess the one exception would be the amarr. They really don't have a true knife range gun. Beam lasers (cruiser variety) have an optimal range of 20km with a falloff of 8km, although which crystal you have loaded will affect the range. Pulse lasers are amarr's "short" range guns but even Heavy Pulse lasers hit out to about 21km with a 6km falloff range. I guess the closest I personally get to knife range in an amarr ship, other than the Pilgrim, would be a zealot loaded with heavy pulse laser IIs with conflagaration crystals. Still if you get within 5km or less of most amarr ships they typically have a hard time hitting you if you manage to keep up a good speed.

I know it's not much to all you long time players, but... i'm rich biatch! Bought a Catalyst and equipped it with a bunch of Blasters, I feel unstoppable.

That's only like 4 jumps away from me. I'm usually in Bereye/Halle.

Argh, couldn't resist the temptation to use the 5 free days, and now I started 2 of my accounts back up. My whole corp is still gone, none of them ever came back, so everything got impounded, guess it's time to sort through the junk.

Nah, that's probably effective mission running. He didn't expect to run into a vicious little cruiser.

but back to the blasters he had fitted - so like with other weapon types the blasters have shorter and longer range versions too huh? Your Heavy ions are the short variety, his neutron accelerators are the long?

Not putting a 1600mm plate on a Mega would be like not putting on your pants to go to work. Well at least to me it would be if I were in 0.0 space. As for mission running the dual repper plus rat specific hardners is an effective fit. There is no need for invul. field IMHO.

Newb mistake...

A Catalyst is a Gallente destroyer:

Ideally suited for both skirmish warfare and fleet support, the Catalyst is touted as one of the best anti-frigate platforms out there. Faced with its top-of-the-line tracking equipment, not many can argue.

Destroyer Skill Bonus: 10% Bonus to Small Hybrid Turret tracking speed and 10% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret falloff per level Penalty: -25% rate of fire for all turrets Bonus: 50% bonus to optimal range for small hybrid turrets

Unless you like to be blown to bits before you can get a shot off, use rails.

With only 3 low slots, and 2 mids, you have little room for tank.
You need good skills (destroyer IV at least, fitting skills, gunnery, etc) to use them well vs player frigates, perhaps even npc frigates.
They do make level 1 missions easy, but it gets a bit more difficult in the few level 2 missions that throw cruisers at you.

Hehe j/k'ing really. Bit too busy with my alliance to go noob hunting. Normally using blasters on gallente ships is typically a pretty good idea. The gallente in general excel at using them. The thing is that whenever they use them on a ship it typically has one of two things going for it. Either it A) has such massive DPS that it'll melt the target before the target can melt it (see the Deimos & Megathron) or B) It has such a hard to break tank that the target's tank will break before it's tank does (See the Hyperion & Brutix). The problem with flying the catalyst with blasters is that you really don't have a tank to back it up to speak of at all and while you do a fair amount of DPS that'll take down a frig a cruiser will swat you like a fly not to mention that there's a good chance that an Assault Frigate will take you down as well. The destroyers aren't bad ships really they just aren't used in pvp much at all. Most folks only train the skill so that they can use interdictors.

Uh learn to quote in context fully:

Yeah that's what I was thinking. What about the plating that increases armor by %, isn't that more effective that straight up +armor on heavily armored ships like the Megathron?

see, Amarr are so versatile, with the crystal load outs meaning no ammo on top of that. Probably need cap rechargers but still...? a fast amarr must be pretty tough to fight.

For those that don't know the Chimera is a capital class ship, a carrier to be specific. Normally you aren't able to take one down with 2 battleships, a HAC, a force recon, a battlecruiser and a cruiser. Typically it takes a bit more firepower, but this guy was a 9 month old character (just BARELY old enough to have the skills to fly it), with an absolutely laughable excuse for a fit and ratting in lowsec to boot.

man...wonder if he quit after losing that. Can't believe he made it that far, such obvious mistakes. Must not have been him...

Well I took advantage of the "5 days free" and logged into my 4 year old character. It only has 1.7 m skillpoints since I've started and stopped the game so many times. I really want to like this game but it's just overwhelming sometimes. I'll see how long I'll stick around this time.

After playing for a few months, everytime I think I know something I realize just how little I actually know.

I probably know maybe 2% about this game. Thats pretty exciting to me, since after playing WoW for 6 months I could easily say I knew 99% about it. I actually enjoy a challenge, not mindless WoWdribble.

I'd invite you guys to my corp's IRC channel but it is for corp members only. If there really is enough interest though I can make an AT IRC channel and folks that are interested can hang out there.

OK i'm going to be fitting a Rupture (matari cruiser) over the weekend...looking for advice on it.

I currently use a Stabber for missions but they've become too difficult to shield tank with only 3 mid slots and minimal capacitor, no matter what I do apparently...so I took up artillery and basic shielding equipment and I do somewhat better. But the elite interceptors and such still destroy me, hence the Rupture!

2 extra low slots, more armour, more cap, damage bonus specials. I was thinking along these lines:

high - 4x 425mm autocannon I (IIs when I can skill for em)
high - 2x arbalest assault launchers

mid - 10mn ab, cap recharger (for the armour repairer?), ????

low - gyro, tracking enhancer, 400mm armour plating, med armor repairer, power diag (?)

5 low slots gives me 2 slots for armour tanking, if I keep 3 tracking enhancers/gyros for extra damage. I'd be fitting an AB and maybe a cap recharger in 2 of the mids (the cap recharger to cover an armor repairer?) but i'm not sure on the 3rd mid or the other lows.

Check Battleclinc.com for good PvE fits but some of the PvP fits are LOL. For PvE you should tend to focus more on resistances more then raw hp. EFT is a tool worth downloading and playing around with to check out your fit before flying in game.

I've just started playing EVE due to an intense recruitment post in another forum I visit, and I'll agree that it's terribly addicting. It's certainly not for everyone (as the first few bawww posts thoroughly covered), and I don't even know if I'll love it in a few months, but it's great for now and the pvp is sweet. Nothing quite like setting up a perfect ambush only to have someone screw up, have us get caught but barely escape, travel 10 systems to catch up with our enemies, split them in 2 and utterly crush them... and I'm only a tackler. My frigate got blown up but only after I helped take down 3 ships and a pod, but after being loaned a ship and looting their hulls I left gaining 20 million isk. Not bad for a 5 day old pilot.

Edit: Also, yeah, having a great corp is necessary for liking this game. Getting pulled into ops every night and doing things is fun, even if it's mostly just sitting around waiting for someone to show up. Long waits and short, intense battles is fine with me... I'm not sure I could handle any more.
