I have a few ships and either fly a Coercer or an Omen (saving for a battlecruiser now) but I know they are equipped terribly. Are there tools that show if an item I pick up could replace one I have or what I should buy? My weapons on the cruiser for example are all small even though I think it has medium slots but I can't figure out what to buy! Same for mid and low slots, I've no idea whatsoever to stick in there so I go with items I'm sure are completely worthless like expanded cargohold...

I'm almost done my free month and feel like I know nothing. I have little playtime so typically do a couple of missions then just park a Sigil next to ore and mine until I can check and move it to another ore. <--- Is that frowned upon? I've been doing it but don't know if they expect us to sit there for hours mining.

For missions too, how do I know what is a level 1 mission compared to others? I've just been doing whatever ones I was offered.

The learning curve on this one seems to take ages. I've been staying in the same 0.8 to 1.0 system since I started and am sure I'm completely missint out. My typical routine is a couple of missions + salvage then go mine somewhere to make money.

Another thing, should I keep all the junk I find from ships or turn around and refine or sell it? I have so much crap accumulated at the starting station in Deepari... why do I need 20 Civilian Shield Booster 1's?? But they aren't worth much else anyways... some stuff is worth more (some of the salvaged goods for example) but I've been hoarding like a pack rat in case I find out later I need all this junk.

One last question, is a sigil at 3000m of storage with 5 expanded Cargohold II better than something like a Retriever with 2000m of storage but only 4 low slots I think... it would have less storage but does it mine much faster?

ARGH!!... I admit it, I am a total newbie even though I've played nearly a month. I haven't even spoken to another player, I just play it as a single player game as my playtime is so limited. I just figured out last week I had to train the learning skills to increase my attributes! And I just figured out this week I could bookmark and asteroid so I didn't have to land 100Km away every time!

I don't mine, so I can't answer those questions, but in order to fit your ship properly, you should use Eve Fitting Tool. It lets you fit things without having to buy them first. Also, look at the bonuses your ship gets, and try to fit things that would use those bonuses. Eve-wiki will help as well, and that is what I used to get acclimated with the nuances of the game.

Also, just about anything goes in Eve. I wouldn't worry about if anything is frowned upon, unless you are afraid you will piss someone off and he will come and blow up your ship because of it. I believe Macros are against the rules, and selling anything for real money is also against the rules. The only other thing I can think of is that you aren't allowed to swear or insult anyone in the game.

Feneant2,

The best advice I can give is join a player corporation. You'll learn more and learn faster if you do so. My corp is pretty newer player friendly and we do most things in Eve (focus more on pvp than anything else, but i certainly mine and know how to fit a mining ship).

The real secret of mining better and faster is mining in teams. You want a mining specialized ship as they have bonuses and equipment that allow you to mine faster. You want to jetison the ore into a jet can and pick that can up with a player that is in a hauler. the downside to this is that the ore can be stolen. You can also do this solo as it saves you multiple trips to and from the station. Finally, you want to mine in a fleet so you get a bonus from that as well.

If you need more advice, you can look me up in game - Myrdin Potter.

Agreed, joining a player corporation is probably the best way to learn about this game and get the most out of it. Lots of corps will help support their pilots (each to varying degrees) and you'll typically see aspects of the game that you wouldn't see as much outside of a player corp. My friends and I have rebooted our old corporation Airhawk Enterprizes. We have a variety of players in the corporation. From folks that have been playing since the beta (that's about 6 years now) to folks that just started the game a couple months ago. Drop in AHEP Pub if you want to chat, it doesn't even have to be about joining the corp we'll talk about in game mechanics as well.

Thanks for the answers guys. I hadn't looked into player corps as I play very little and when I can't group or help someone I feel like I'm wasting their time.

I might look you up (ends up my account expired last night! So I am debating whether or not to reactive)

I've tried this a couple of times and could never get into it. Never joined a corporation though. I just reactivated my account because I love space games (freespace 2 is one of the greatest games every IMO). Not sure if I want to really start playing it though as I'm into LOTRO right now. But just in case the bug hits me I want to continue to level skills.

I spent some time training up my "social skills", and they made a HUGE difference for my mission running capabilities... I can now access much better agents and get some of those nice level 2 missions. They're a little tough on my blasterboat Thorax, but I'm getting the hang of them - I think getting some medium drones on board would help a lot.

TBH, the Vexor is generally better for L2 missions than the Thorax. You can fit 2 sets of light drones, and 1 set of medium drones onboard vs. just a single set of medium drones for the Thorax. But I ran both for L2 missions, and the Thorax can be effective.

Once you have a Mission Running Myrmidon, and access to L3 missions, you can start making around 5M ISK just on bounties for a good mission. Get to a Domi and L4 missions, and you can make 20M ISK on good missions just on bounties, plus the salvage is great on those. I have been farming the Blood Raider Blockade mission, and I get a steady 20M ISK each day, along with around 50 armor plates each time (I build Tri-marks with my salvage for my PvP ships.) The additional salvage I have been using lately to build other rigs and sell them, which has suplemented my income quite a bit (Maybe on average of an additional 10M per mission in profit)

I lost another Dominix. link

I am suprised that they were able to get it with only one Mothership, I figured PL would drop a couple of Titans as well just to make sure.

EDIT: Actually it was a very good job of them to bait us into bringing worthy targets. I had fun during the encounter, even if I did get raped by 23 capital ships. They waited until the bait carrier got into structure before jumping in, since we only brought out two capitals (I am sure they were hoping for more). We were only forced to do that because at the time we didn't have enough BS's available to break the tank, and we wanted to kill it before the backup came.

Oh well, now we know that character is a PL alt, so we can plan accordingly from now on.

Got to said - My beautiful drake got a** rape by those evil drones this morning. I was doing a lvl 3 mission for New Frontier (5 or 7). Like any greenhorn, I read the tips about the mission from battleclinic. Tips: Don't kill the neut towers & bring passive shield tanking. Thought to myself - cool. my drake should handle this with no problem since I build it around passive shield tanking.
Warp in - and right on time, they drain my cap to zero while I start killing other stuffs. A few minutes in, I notice my def got over run. After that, I could only watch helplessly as they chew through my armor & hull. Checking the wreckage, I notice a lot of equipments survive the destruction. Inspire by stupidity, I warped back in on my cruiser hoping to grab the loots and warp back out before those drones know I was there. I will have the last laugh on those evil drones. Haha... Their laugh were on me since they lock, drain and kill my cruiser under 30s after wrapped back in.

Ouchy.

I am so close to level III missions now. I am gaining about 2-3 million per mission now with all the salvage and higher rewards. About half way back to being able to buy a 2nd Myrmidon should this one get popped.

But it is nice to know should it get popped. I can buy a lot of Vexors if I need to.

That kind of sucks. I almost lost my Domi to the Nueting Cruisers in The Blockade. I was able to get out by spamming warp. You can usually warp even with no cap, you just won't go very far. Still, going 2000km is better than dying. (I had just removed my 1600 plate buffer for a previous mission, since I needed a more universal tank, and I never put it back on, so that decision almost killed me as they tore through my unhardened armor with ease.)

Of course I did lose my PvP domi to a carrier blob, but in that case there was nothing I could do other than warp out before they pointed me.

Yeah, it's not the most effective ship in the world, but it works. I usually just hit the afterburner at 25km, launch drones, and follow them in. Now that I've got my drone training a bit more complete, I might try out a Vexor - not like I can't have both. ;-)

What I really need to do now that I have salvaging trained is to convert my Catalyst into a salvager... that would probably raise my mission hauls considerably.

how high does my standing have to be to get to lvl2 missions. My charisma is 3 does this have any impact? I also trained those social skills to 2

Check the info of the agent you want to run L2's for. It'll tell you what standing you need to be to talk to the agent.

1.0 standing minimum. Training connections to 3 will get you most of the way there, or it did for me. Remember to train diplomacy so that running missions against one faction all the time won't screw you later.

Charisma won't have any ingame impact other than how long it takes for you to train the skills.

Check Eve-Agents to see what standings you will need. Each level of Connections you train will increase your standing with friendly corps by 0.4. Each level of Social that you train will increase you standings gain that you get when you complete a mission by 40%. Both are important if you plan on running a lot of missions. I would get both to Level 3 at a minimum, and 4 or 5 if you can. Diplomacy is important, as you lose standings with your factions enemies as you gain standings with them (at a much lower rate mind you).

You'd be surprised. Still, doing the Caldari "Enemies Abound" mission over and over doesn't help even if the mission itself is pretty lucrative.

You can usually train just about any skill to level 3 in one day. It all depends on what is important to you.

If you are new, I suggest learning the Core Competencies to Basic to start with, then to Standard when you start flying BS's. Doing this allows you to use most T2 support equipment, so your ships won't be totally gimped.

Some advice given to me when I started was to train all primary learning skills to 4, and all secondary skills to 3. The even more important advice I got was to train Engineering and Electronics to 5. That really allows you to start fitting your ships properly. If you do much combat, you also want to get Weapons Upgrades to 5 and Advanced Weapons Upgrades to 3 or 4.

I did this second part with my alt within a month. He has since been training industrial and trade skills.

If you haven't done it yet, download Eve-mon and use it. It will help immensely early on to know what skills you need to do what, and give you a schedule to train them.
