Recently I have been having some weird problems with my graphics in various games. Basically every second frame is rendered very slowly, almost as if the computer is running in SLI with only one card.
For instance in UT2004, turning on the frames per second reading (stat fps), it reads an average fps of 2-4 fps, whilst the current fps jumps between about 95 and 2. Reducing resolution and quality settings only has the effect of jumping between 250 and 2 fps.
I have a decent computer (Opteron 165 @ 2.3GHz, XFX 7800gt @ 460/1160, 2x512Mb Corsair 3200 XMS Pro @ 2.5-3-3-7 / 212MHz, DFI Lanparty UT SLI-DR Expert, 250Gb 7200rpm hard drives and pagefile split over non system discs (seperate partitions at the start of the discs)), so the game really should just run smoothly
UT2004 does visually appear to be running relatively smoothly, but not perfectly - almost like it is sitting on about 45 fps, which given an oscillation between 95 and 2 fps on altenate frames, does seem to reflect the numbers ((95 + 2)/2 ~ 45 fps).
I ran 3DMark 2006 and used one of the tools which outputs the speed that each frame is rendered at to an Excel spreadsheet and this confirmed the fact that every second frame is running slowly. It listed all the even frames at ~45 fps and all the odd ones at about 4 fps. Really weird.
I can't think of any other programmes that will illustrate the problem. However I have notice that Oblivion is running quite slowly at 1280x1024 when most other people with similar comps to me aren't having any trouble.
I can't remeber exactly what drivers I'm using (I'll check when I get home), but they where the WHQL certified ones from about 5-6 weeks ago. I tried to update to the ones that were released about 2 weeks ago, but I had serious problems the screen just went black and and both monitors went into power save mode. I started up in safe mode and rolled back the drivers.
I have tried reverting both my CPU and GPU back to stock clock speeds but this has had no effect.
By the way, I'm running Windows Server 2003, and obviously since I am actually able to play the games DirectX 9.0c is installed and Hardware acceleration is turned on. So I don't think it's any of the generic Windows 2003 gaming issues.
