eVga GTX 570 Install Issues...

This should have been the simplest part but I'm having trouble getting the GTX 570 into my Asus Sabertooth Motherboard.

It seems to click into the slot ok, but the expansion slot cover thingo that you screw to the case doesn't quite line up and looking at the back plate, it appears to be on an angle, tapering away from the motherboard side.

Dunno if that makes sense or not.

Anyway, looking at the card on it's own, it looks like the expansion plate does not sit at right angles to the card....is this a problem?

Does anyone have a gtx 570 they can have a look at or try to remember whether this was an issue for them?

is the back plane on the card straight?

I've had cards before where the tabs that slide into the case are bent slightly outwards, making the card not seat properly. If that is the case, gently bend them straight with a pair of pliers or vice grips, and you should be all set.

Ya know, now that I see that in the pic...my younger brothers GTX 460 1 gig EVGA was exactly like that. He did bend it a little and it fit fine though.

But what the hell is going on with NV's quality control nowadays ? This isn't the first time I seen this.

Don't bend anything yet. A few more questions...

There should be slits in your case where the tabs I referenced in the above post slide into. Is this happening?

How bad is the fit? Does it feel like it's almost there or is there like a huge gap?

When you remove the card do you have to push the release tab on the PCIe slot for the card to come out. If not, your card is not seated correctly.

Yeah it is pretty bad I reckon, but what do you expect these days, it's the same with everything else too, the more I think about it, the more I get pissed off.

Anyway, I took the cover of the card and have backed off two of the screws that hold the plate onto the card....will now try to reinstall and see what happens.

nitromullet, yes there are slits in the case that the metal tabs go through.

It seems to seat pretty good, I do have to press the release tab to get it out.

When looking at the card, you know the slit between the two connectors? I can still see the a bit of a space and the top of this slit when the card is connected....is that normal?

You have every right to be pissed. As should anyone that would spend alot of hard earned money on such a nice card, Only to have a cheap piece of metal screwed up like that.

Do what you can dude. But just be sure not to damage anything. If it would ever need RMA'd, you'd probably be screwed. Never know though.

Do it slow, and do it right. What ever it is your doing.

By the way. Is it possible to snap a quick picture of the card inside the case ? Completely seated in the slot ?

Let us see exactly how it looks.

Sounds like it is seating properly to me. The slit is probably still showing because the card is not completely secured. Once it's tightened down you won't see it.

Without seeing pics of how big your gap is, it seems that you could probably get a screw through the hole and get it into the threads. Once you get one in, you can slowly tighten the card down. You can also try pushing on the back of the case as well to meet the card. I don't know what kind of case you have, but some cases I've used have quite a bit of flex that you can use to close the gap.

If you gap is bigger than that, you might want to post some pics of the card in the case so we can see how bad the fit is.

Here they are...

As you can see the holes are not THAT far off, but it seems I'm applying a bit of force when I move it all to get them to line up....

And the gap at the connectors? Do you think by screwing it down to the backplate, it'll close properly?

Nitro is right. I have also in my time seen certain cases with a very mild "deformity" keep cards from lining up as well.

But in your case, it is the card. Would be nicer if it were the case though.

I think that will go in. It looks like you're putting the card in at an angle. Make sure you slide it in straight.

Another thing you can try is to go ahead in put the top screw in, but just turn it enough so it stays in (you want most of the screw sticking out). Then slide the card in and sort of hook it underneath the top screw. Once you have it hooked, tighten a little, and then put the second screw in. Finally, tighten them both down.

Your situation isn't all that unusual. I've seen this with quite a few cards, both NVIDIA and AMD/ATI. My 4870 X2 was a bitch to install, had to push on it quite bit. Just be careful not the strip the screws or your case. I don't think you need to bend anything on the card, it should go in with a little coaxing.

I think you ment to say whats going on with EVGA's quality control, as nv only makes the GPU chip itself, not the cards.

OP i would just bend it till it lines up then screw it down, its not a big deal and ive had to do that in the past.

EDIT TO Add:

You can usually remove the backplate with 1 or 2 screws and then bend it, so you dont risk damage to the PCB of the card.

I had a similar problem with my gigabyte 470. The backplate was slightly bent. Probably from a serious knock in shipping. Just bent it back into shape and slotted in perfectly.

Yep, EVGA. Not NV.

That is the second time I done that. EVGA Precision won't keep its fan settings that I set upon reboot. And I said NV on that too, but caught it after I posted it.

Thanks for the input guys, I ended up loosening the back screws and screwing it home on the backplate. It went in and I've quickly powered up and all is ok, but man it didn't feel right having to do that to a AU$450 card!

Every card I've had before has been utterly perfect, and I've been waiting months to get these bits and build a new computer so a bit of a letdown. I might consider writing to eVGA, they should be made aware of things like this.

Anyway thanks again, off to post the next problem in 'cooling', please have a look if you got the time.

My first Gigabyte 580 was the first card I've ever bought that also required a significant amount of pressure just to get the mounting screws in...and yeah, it did not feel right at all.

No idea if it's related, but a month later the card would spit out green garbage whenever I played any video, and crashed the drivers over and over.

Got a replacement Giga 580, fit into the case just fine, and so far is running smooth. Weird and disconcerting nonetheless.
