If you really want to get into modifying cars and not be another statistic, do yourself a favor start saving up for the TRD supercharger for the 2AZ. It's easy to install in an evening or two, gives a noticeable improvement in performance and sound, and is offered by Toyota without voiding your warranty. Then you might even actually need that CAI and exhaust.

Resist the urge to impulsively act on that bug prematurely by wasting money on things that don't matter. The companies selling "mods" for cars like the Scions are bending you over with their $500+ mufflers and exhaust tips and intakes. The Scion line and it's catalog of mods was created to capitalize on the impulsive modding bug of young car enthusiasts and take away their hard earned paychecks.

Modifying a car without the proper time or money or planning is a big factor in creating rice. It's understandable that you are young, don't have money saved, and just got your first new car and want to play with it. Just be patient, we've all been there.

Non performance modifications on a budget 4 cyl are going to be considered rice by the majority of people unless it's a car known for it's performance like a MR2 or S2000 or MS3 or SRT4 or something along those lines were they might actually do something. You get a little bit of leeway being the Scion brand is marketed with young aspiring car enthusiasts in mind and offered with a catalog of factory customizations, but not much.

Fact: most cars come from the factory with "cold air" intakes which draw air from the fender, and replacing with an aftermarket "cold air" kit which is just a metal tube with an exposed filter in the engine bay for $2.50 in hardware store parts and sold to you for $300 is better known as a "hot air intake".

got a good deal on the world sport 2 cheapest i found online was ~400+shipping, some guy wrecked his scion, got the money from his insurance and was just sellin parts from it for extra cash, paid $200 and he installed it, all bolt on exhaust was on his car for 2 months but i cleaned it up and now its lookin nice and sexy on my car.

hes also has H&R sport springs, which are the ones i want, there about 230 online he said he'd install them for 150....

tempting....what would atot due? i know modifying costs is alot of money for really nothing but these seem to be at a decent price where it seems "worth it" a little more comparing the cost of online retailers

It will be louder (you'll probably hear the intake), but your performance impact will be minimal.

What kind of intake are you talking? One of those "short ram" types? I like to call those hot air intakes. You're better off with the stock one. If you really want an intake just go with a CAI although really you're not getting a lot of "bang" for your buck. You MIGHT get 5hp with a good intake but more than anything it will just make more noise.

Springs aren't a bad deal at $150 installed assuming the guy knows what he's doing. Note: just because he has them installed on his car doesn't mean he knows what he's doing.

For springs keep in mind you will need to realign the wheels afterwards, so budget another 60 to 90 for that.

Also depending on the drop, he may want to replace struts as well.

This is truth. When I got my Subaru, it had a cheap cone filter on the end of an intake tube bobbing around in the engine compartment. I finally got around to reinstalling the factory box and panel filter, which drew cool air from the fenderwell instead of hot air from the engine compartment - noticeable difference. The factory setup worked far better than the hot-air kit that it replaced.

I would forget doing the exhaust, and save up for the S/C kit if it were me. You won't see any performance gains from the exhaust alone on a stock motor in that car. As someone above said, any perceived gains will be all in your head. Although, if I happened to stumble across someone selling a gently used aftermarket exhaust for a great price, I'd probably jump on it - with the understanding that this won't help performance (at least without other supporting mods) and would be purely for looks / sound.

I'd do S/C kit ==> shocks + springs (do together) ==> sway bars and bushings. Then maybe start thinking about exhaust, as you will get much more out of it with forced induction.

If im ever do any FI it won't be sc I'd go the other route with a turbo. but like i said adding FI to cars that don't come stock with it always brings headaches, im not looking for much if any performance gain, just visuals.

after i lower the car i should get it re-aligned?

I saw a bolt on muffler at Kragen for 40 bucks. I was very tempted to buy it and put it on my Civic.

Buy a Borla or Magnaflow muffler from Summitracing.com that is comparable in size to your stock muffler. Take it to a local muffler shop, and tell them you'd like it in place of your stock rear muffler. You will get great sound and maybe a couple HP for 1/3 the price of those systems. With either of the ones you posted, you will gain maybe a couple HP and spend an absurd amount of money on a product that's not that special.

e: God I can't stand the sound of that motor.

I am confused, I was under the impression mufflers (or exhaust) don't do anything to HP

Hence "maybe a couple". Maybe, maybe not. Certainly nothing noticeable.
