I dare say most if not ALL power supply calculators are highly inaccurate!!
I have yet to find a power supply calculator that is accurate even remotely!!
Always take with a grain of salt what these calculators will say you need!!

Peace!!

Sadly this calculator still overmeasures my computer by about 150 watts. That's not a very precise way to find the size of your psu that you need.

Are you selecting single or dual processor?

Sure, there is no way to make it 100% accurate because it is based on component groups, not individual components (except CPU, and Video Cards) and it was designed to give you as close estimate as possible.

BUT: you are saying it over measures your computer. Let me ask you this. Can you provide a 100% or even 85% load of ALL, I repeat ALL of your computer components? I don't think so, that?s why you see lower wattage if you, say, use kill-a-watt monitor or a similar tool. And that's why you have all necessary adjustments in the Calculator to come up wit closest result as possible.

Again, do not expect the Calculator to be 100% accurate - it's impossible! Unless we enter all known computer components individually in our database. But in this case it will probably die in a few months as all other previous calculators that made an attempt to list individual components and found it un-maintainable.

I use it more as to get a rough estimate, just gives me an idea of what capacity PSU I should be looking at.

I found the CPU power calculator pretty cool - didn't realize my opteron 165 dumps almost 180W of heat :Q

I just did a calc for my new system and for some reason this just seems a little high:

System Type: Quad Processor
Motherboard: High End - Desktop (Abit IP5 Pro)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2400 MHz Kentsfield
Overclocked: 3000 MHz, 1.4 V
CPU Utilization (TDP): 85% TDP

RAM: 4 Sticks DDR2 SDRAM (Crucial Ballistix Tracers DDR2-800)
Video Card 1: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB

IDE HDD 7200 rpm: 1 HDD
SATA HDD: 3 HDDs

CD-RW Drive: 1 Drive
DVD-RW/DVD+RW Drive: 1 Drive
Floppy Drive: 1 Drive

Sound Blaster - All Models: Yes
PCI IDE Card: Yes
PCI-e x1 Card: 1 Card
PCI-e x4 Card: 1 Card

USB: 4 Devices
IEEE-1394 FireWire: 1 Device

Fans
LED: 5 Fans 92mm; 1 Fan 120mm;

Cold Cathodes: 2 Cathodes

Keyboard and mouse: Yes

System Load: 90 %

Recommended Wattage: 884 Watts

Recommended Amperage:
+3.3V +5V +12V
13.6 A 18.3 A 62.3 A

And this was without using the capacitor aging feature. If I add that at 30% is jumps up to 1149 watt PSU recommendation. I plan on keeping my PSU for at least 3-4yrs.

Do you all think this seems high? Is it unrealistic to use a 90% system load for your calculation?

What cards are those???

The x1 will be a TV capture card like the WinTV-HVR-1800. I actually haven't decided on that one just yet. It may end up being a PCI card.

The x4 will eventually be an Adaptec 3805 sata raid card.

Ding, yup I just saw that now that you mentioned it. Single processor, 4 cores, must have thought it was 4 processors. wow 4 quads would be sweet

Yeah, I made the same mistake before and nearly gave myself a heart attack since I already ordered a 520W PSU and it gave me a result of 612W.

Doh!! I had it in my head that the setting that I needed was quad processor b/c I was running a quad core. I didn't even read the note below the System Type selection that clearly states "Attention: Dual or Quad Core CPUs are Single Processors." LMAO!! Damn ADD! Thank you guys for recognizing that.

Ok, now this is more like it. I'm getting 527w without any capacitor aging and 686w with a 30% capacitor aging setting. You think my Antec TruePower 430w should get me by for the time being?

I've been looking at getting the Thermaltake W0116RU 750w for a good PSU that will last me a few years. I also like the Enermax Infiniti 720 too but it's a little pricey as there is no rebates on it currently.

I made the same mistake... Maybe the disclaimer should be in bold with an exclamation point... I totally read singl, dual and quad as 'core' rather than CPU.

That changed my values quite a bit... In what I would consider a good 'guestimate'.

I wouldn't try it. Might work ok at idle but load it up and I'd fully expect OCP to kick in.

Just get a good PSU right off the bat.

Hmmm....with my system below with 3 HDs and a 2nd 280 on the way says 598W. I guess I will be OK with the Corsair 750TX I have on the way.

Why do people always say 1000W or 1200W automatically? I know it is better to run at a lesser % of max output, but some people are rediculous.
