Yes overboard, so what, it's my money Better than going to government in taxes where it will only fill the pockets of greedy politicians

Hosting files and media and basically overhauling home system and network with awesome new setup. Some help would be nice. Stream videos locally to tv in other parts of house, backup hundreds of GB and thousands of files almost daily across several home computers and laptops, as well as across internet to other parts of country for easy quick access. Overhaul PC for extreme multitasking; however don't need 8 cores or multiple graphics cards because there is no video editing or gaming.

Willing to drop to $4500. $~2500 to $3000 PC with other things for the home server.
But if needed have top budget of $6500.

You're going to write it off?? Otherwise, I dont see what taxes has to do with it. Hope the IRS doesnt read this thread.

I think I would also consider spending a chunk of that money wiring the entire place with cat6 cable and buying some gigabit routers so I didn't have to run any in-place units on wifi.

p.s. I am a professional and can wire it myself. Doesn't take a genius to know "plug into the ethernet port, then hide the wires".

I think he's talking about wiring your house (in-wall) for Cat6 ports in every room with a centralized switch. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know...I'm not a lawyer.

Ok, so I am only getting about 30Mb/s transfer speed.

Moreover, large transfers (30GB+) are causing Explorer to crash.

This happened with both 30GB+ of movie files (large files),
and also same with 30GB+ of text files (small files).

Given the NAS and the system, all gigabit capable, and using a CAT6 cable, what is causing this?

NAS is plugged to router, router plugged to PC.

So is building this PC. But having your house wired for Ethernet with a real switch in the closet is way cooler.

sure if you want to needlessly throw away $10,000 (or more? Maybe $100,000? depends on size of house I guess) for .0001% life benefit and a "cool factor" that no one but you will see or care about.

30 megaBITs or 30 megaBYTEs?

How did you configure the NAS?

What drives did you install?

30 mega BITS

configured it normally

normal 2GB 7200rpm WD in the NAS, SSD in the PC

The sad thing is, "spend it or the government gets the money" is not really true.

Even if your marginal tax rate is 32%, if you waste $100 you're still $68 poorer than if you just paid the taxes.

If you only really need a $2,000 setup, you're throwing away $1,000 on a $3,500 build. You could spend that money on something else that will help your business, or on something fun.

My accountant would beg to differ.

My accountant would beg to differ.

Then you need to change accountants.

A deduction of X saves you X * (marginal tax rate) in taxes.

You gain the use of whatever X bought, but in terms of money you lose X * (1 - MTR).

I suppose if you're living in some bizarre country with a marginal tax rate of 500% then you'd come out ahead. Even with a marginal tax rate of 99% you still lose financially.

Edit: I suppose if you weren't paying your estimated taxes on time then you'd possibly also avoid some under-payment penalties by increasing your deductions, but that's a terrible long-term strategy. You still would have been better off paying on time and then not spending the X.

]I only need one maybe 3 to 5ghz processor

5ghz became ONLY?

i cant think of anyone off the top of my head who has a 5ghz 24/7 on PC, that truly knows what they are doing.
They run 5ghz 24/7 with no real benefit besides number and have the full intention of giving that dying cpu to someone else in 6 months, so they can 5ghz another cpu.
and yes most either know this... or are completely blind to how to overclock properly...

Oh but there are few exceptions... like possibly.. 1:100 will have that perfect chip which can do 5ghz and not degrade.

OP, you don't know how taxes work. Not paying taxes on the $3500 doesn't mean you pay $3500 less in taxes.

This just goes to show how stupid you can be and still (apparently) own a business.

lolol...

i think his accountant told him he had an allowable business expensive fund which he could tap into as a write off.

The IRS doesnt need to know i have a 780 GTX in the office machine.
They just need to know its a Office Machine.

LOL, 10K to run some Ethernet cable. That is rich.

What kind of NAS? How many files in a transfer?

In most cases, a single 7200 RPM drive is not sufficient to max out a Gigabit link.
