Alright guys, here's the deal and I'm hoping someone may have seen this before. I've used ghost for quite some time (both local and via ghostcast) on an almost daily basis. Last night we had 13 Windows 2003 servers to patch - finally updating with SP1 (most were HP DL380 G3s and G4s).
Our process here is to reboot the server, launch ghost and do a partition to image session (we only backup the SYS partition). We save the GHO file to one of the other standard partitions. Once the ghost completes successfully we restart back into Server 2003 and apply all necessary updates.
Surprise surprise, one hung during the service pack, and what are you going to get on a reboot but a BSOD.....
Now the issue - we boot back to Ghost, to restore the SYS partition back to our pre-patching state. The *servername*.GHO file is not there. I am irate as I was not the one who was working this particular server and now i get to stay even later. So as I'm working through an attempt to repair the server, I check the other servers (just in case)...I have not yet gone back and verified exact numbers, but I would estimate that 7-10 of them had NO *.gho or *.ghs files on them anywhere. I WATCHED two of the servers complete the ghost as these were the last two i was waiting on...NEITHER of these had any ghost files to be found, regardless of the fact that I directly saw them complete.
Any thoughts? Input? Previous experience?
