There aren't any at the moment, and Vijay Pande at Stanford (F@H's leader) has stated in the past that even if one is released, to not expect huge performance gains from it. Other rumored F@H enhancements for the future include the much-anticipated GPU client, and better clients for Linux and Mac...

Yeah, I looked up your first WU on the Stanford server and it was one in the p9xx (900's) series... those are all 100-frame Gromacs core WUs that yield pretty mediocre points.

Wait until you get something in the 1140s or 1470s, then you will start racking up the points. Or if you are running on Intel hardware, keep an eye out for ones in the 1900s because they are the elusive QMD workunits that are the best of all.

The variety, and randomness of work assignments in F@H are possibly this project's biggest contrast to other DC projects like SETI, and are also one of the most controversial aspects of the program. However, for some of us (myself included) it also serves to keep us interested...

yeah, as frustrating as it is to get hit with the crappy wu's its part of the "game" lol. someones gotta do it and it makes the 600 point wu's sweeter when they come.

i think my main rig put up 2 wu's worth <100 points since wednesday

and welcome newcomers and thanks for the stats!

They are not elusive. You will get one every time (at least for the short term):

If you have 512 MB or more of ram
a P4 or Xeon processor (probably the Pentium D also)
the client set to >5MB = yes option
and the new client set to advmethods or add the -advmethods flag to the startup shortcut

With 30 P4@3.0 running QMDs we would climb to 17th place.

Haha, I only called them elusive because for months I kept waiting, and waiting, and waiting to get one and see what all the fuss was about, until I found out I would never get one because my farm is all AMD-based

Question: Do QMD work units work on Pentium M systems? I'm just coming back to folding and Team Anandtech after a few month absence.

Hello drthpichu and welcome to the DC forum

I think it stands for "quantum molecular dynamics".

It is a WU (work unit) that gets a bonus because it uses more resources than a regular WU. Stanford is testing them to see if the faster results (more science done) is worth the disadvantages of using this new technology.

Also because of a license issue with the compiler it is only sent to some types of Intel CPUs.

@TwilightZone77

Welcome back

QMD WUs will work on Pentium M systems.

But I don't think that the client reports the correct info to the Assignment Server, so will not get one.

Also not sure if the WU would run with SSE2/3.

If I had one I would try moving one from my P4 or Xeon.

Thanks osage.
I had to cut my farm down drastically due to the heat and the electric bill.
Will try to ramp it back up in the fall.

Big welcome to the new team members Kensai, tuxdave, and Bob_Opgrand and congrats to all other Milestone Makers.
