Next up: ban on smoking outside

In Canada, smoking is illegal inside all workplaces now =) and essentially, everything is a workplace excluding your own home.
Is this all of Canada, or just your province?
It's hard for me to see how everything outside ones home could be considered a "workplace".

because it's somebody else's workplace, even if it isn't yours

For federal government buildings, there is a rule that says the smoke break has to be at least 50ft from an entrance/exit.
And, a couple of years back, the waitress at Dick`s Last Resort in San Dog was none too happy explaining California`s new law to me when I asked for an ashtray. I thought she was BSing me , since they have attitude to begin with, until she called the bouncer over and he explained (at least he wasn`t a prick about it) that she wasn`t putting me on.
Didn`t tip the bit*h anyway.

heh, i like dick's last resort. food is kinda overpriced, but it's ok, and the waiters can be funny. i'm even wearing a shirt from that dick's right now.

oh yeah, i used to smoke but gave it up a couple months ago. and when i did smoke, i felt guilty whenever i was around someone that didn't smoke because they were being exposed to carcinogens against their will. someone's right to not breath cigarette smoke > right to smoke anywhere one pleases. you wanna smoke, do it in your house, your car, your private enclosed property. don't whine and bitch how non-smokers and government "trample your rights" because you're not allowed to kill people around you while you're killing yourself.

On my campus, it's pretty draconian, as far as the res. halls go - can only smoke across the street, no where else near the res. halls. I support it 100%. If that crap gets in the ventilation system for my dorm... ugh.

Yes, thank you, oh wise one.
I don't smoke, but I still fail to see how "outside" is a workplace of anyone in particular.
Are you discussing construction workers, street sweepers, window washers, used car salesmen, or what?

My girlfriend is a smoker and every time I see her I can smell the smoke on her clothes, in her truck.... I can't stand it. Who is their right mind would breathe a burnt material into their body on a daily (sometimes hourly) basis on purpose? Yes, I realize nicotine is a addictive drug, but WTF makes someone start smoking in the first place? Let's see:

Being cool? I don't think so; smoking is seen by many people as a nasty disgusting habit. Even kids know it's impacts, physical and social.

Staying thin? Maybe... but at what cost? I personally think this one is a crock. I think it's the smoke that kills your taste buds and you don't want to eat as much as you would normally.

Oral fixation? Maybe... but I can think of better things to stick in your mouth than mashed up burnt plant material and insect parts (btw, recent studies show that upto 22% of cigs are insects parts. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!).

Wanting to be a nasty ass that stinks and no one likes to talk to because of your yellow teeth? Yah I'd believe it.

Anyone else hate this?
Almost makes me want to take up smoking again just to piss off anal retentives like you.

I wish you stupid, thick-headed smokers could understand this. Your smoking around other people effects MORE than just yourself! Second-hand smoke is bad for you. End of discussion. You have no right to endanger my health. Smoke in your car and in your house. Stand by an entrance to a non-smoking establishment and blow smoke in my face and I'll snatch your precious little ciggy right out of your mouth.

Nobody's protesting a smoker's right to smoke. Go ahead and fsck yourselves up for all we care. It's the part about OTHER people being affected by it that makes it foul. Smoke in your houses, or your cars (as long as you keep the fscking windows closed) - that way darwin can root those out those who make the conscious decision to give themselves cancer - without affecting those that didn't make that decision.

Or you can wean your weak asses off the smokes and live life like the rest of the world.

Rather than getting mad at the smokers, why don't you get mad at the people responsible for tobacco being a legal product? Your legislators are the ones who allow tobacco growers and manufacturers of tobacco products to be sold in the U.S. It is up to you and those of your ilk to stop the madness. You have to contribute money ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$) to the campaigns of people who are willing to ban the use of tobacco in the U.S. just as they made the growing, possession, distribution and use of marijuana illegal.

If you are truly as adamant as you claim then start a referendum to ban tobacco.

Otherwise, STFU!

Smokers can try to be considerate too. Huddling around building entrances where kids walk in and out... are you for or against that ? I'm not allowed to get mad at the smokers but rather get mad at people who aren't making it illegal? Consideration drives our morals, doesn't it ? Again, fvck yourselves up, not others.

Most smokers just don't know the image they project when they do smoke. I don't see how anyone could possibly smoke if they really got a look from a non-smoker's point of view. Smokers stink like nothing else, their teeth are yellow, people who smoke tend to look like bums, etc... To me, smoking is just a way to move yourself down to the lower class of people. I just hate idiot smokers who throw their butts out the window of their car. I want to ram each one of them and run them off the road. I also want to punch every one of them that blows smoke in my face. If you want to kill yourself, that's fine with me. But when you start killing me, I will get ticked off. I plan on suing the tobacco industry when I get older because even though I havn't smoked a single cig in my entire life, I feel that my life is very much worse off because of cigs. I hope that a pack of cigs go up in price $5 just to pay my settlement. Then I will ride around the country lauging at all of you smokers burning $100 bills and losing your homes and cars just to pay for you precious cigs. If I felt like burning money, I would go to the bank and get a bunch of singles and burn them. Smokers are idiots and those who disagree are blind (and stupid).

Wow, I can't believe everyone is totally anti-smoking here. I don't like cigs, they're bad for you, and personally I think they taste like sh*t, so I don't smoke. But I can live with smelling like a cig some or to inhale a little second hand smoke if I'm in a restaurant or whatever. Surely they are other lifesyle habits that pose far greater of a threat to your heath.

There there.. calmer now? Not all smokers are idiots. Some simply have an addiction since they've wrongfully decided to choose and smoke in the first place. It's those who choose to continually pay $6/pack to smoke because they simply don't give a flying fvck about themselves or people around them that most of us get pissed about. Inconsiderate... no way around it.

Puh-lease.

Actually where I live, Vancouver British Columbia in Canada, in public areas there are special recylcled air rooms for those puffing bastards to puff in. Its bad enough that they kill themselves, but I don't want to be killed too. We've had smoking banned in restraunts and buildings for nearly 5 years, and its been a huge improvement. I've gone to Montreal and Seattle, there are cigarette buds all over the place its just digusting. With this ban in place Vancouver has been made a much nicer city.

Its not its just all these bans have really deterred people from smoking, on top of the fact that people just don't drop their butts here they actually throw stuff in the garbage and stuff.

So you have no defense and you don't disagree... all you can muster up is that he's whining? Good...

How this for a defense, I have had family members Die fighting to defend my freedoms and some of those freedoms are the right for me to smoke. Now me smoking, right or wrong thats another topic. So get over it, and stop whining there are much biger fish to fry in this world.

Renob your arguments are stupid and invalid in this case. Cars are pretty much essential to our modern day life, smoking is not.
