Yeah man. Sometimes I walk around campus and there are these people puffing away. Here at San Jose State University, you need to be at least 20 feet away from any building to smoke. They should make it where you can't smoke on campus period. It's a health hazard.

I know. Being an ex-smoker I can see both sides. I was just making an observation...you usually can't reverse the two statements. IOW, how many nonsmokers think "Just leave if you don't like it"?

Really? Think about it Nik. Between those who smoke and those who don't, who's using common sense?

It should be legal to kill smokers. They're killing themselves anyway, so at least we can have the pleasure of doing that.

Then it should be legal to castrate stupid people (like you). They're probably not ever in their lives have the chance to breed, so at least we can have the pleasure of making sure they don't.

Why can't we just go back to the wild west pioneering era? I doubt anyone whined about something so trivial as cigarrette smoke back then. Yes, your 2 second walk through a group of smokers is trivial.

Starting to hate this country for what it's becoming. Ugh.

Talking to me...I think so, but I'm not sure, I'm not liberal. Truth be told, the last time I was annoyed by a smoker was bout 4 or 5 months ago while standing in line to sell back books. To you, and Nik, I never said anything about rights so get off it. You have the right to be a moron, and I have the right not to like it.

Yeah, I'm hit hard by a cold. I probably should go to bed so I don't cause any more confusion

I started smoking because I was in some really stressful situations for a while, and the nicotine helped keep me relaxed. I quit because I want to live past 40.

Edit: And when I did smoke, I always tried to be respectful of the people around me...I tried to make sure I didn't get smoke in anybody's face or anything, because it's just an asshole thing to be doing.

I started smoking because I thought it was cool o), but then found myself not able to help it when I was stressed. Strange how cigs calm stress... lord knows I'd need a pack a day at my current job. But that's why I have my cigars. One on 4th of July, one on New Years, and one on my birthday at midnight.

Listen, ive stopped smoking twice and its VERY POSSIBLE. I quit cold turkey!! It might give you a headache for a week but you need to stop smoking...smoking is gay and stupid and very annoying. I hate how smokers try to condone it by saying "Im gonna die anyway" well dont kill us with your bull5h1t excuse! wanting something to puff on? how about a nice long hard...gun barrel?

Wow, you people are really overreacting. Walking through a group of smokers outside is not going to harm you. You'll hurt yourself more by walking behind a running vehicle. Tobacco smoke does a lot less in terms of hurting the environment than cars, or even that nice little fire you light during winter. I've never smelled like smoke when I walk through a group of people smoking. There's simply not enough time for the smoke to get attached to your clothes.

The sheer stupidity of the these children that are bashing smokers it hilarious. We should kill them? We should ram cars into them because they flicked a butt out of their car? WTF is with you fascists? I actually got a laugh out of this thread...non-smokers assuming most people who smoke will develop cancer. Completly false. 8% of the U.S. white male (which is the largest cancer statistic) smokers actually die from lung cancer compared to 1% in non-smokers. While, there is a greater risk of developing cancer with smoking, the numbers given by the media and non-smoking organizations are skewed and exaggerated.

The fact is, most people who smoke will never develop cancer from smoking.

The risk for a non-smoker to get lung cancer from inhaling second hand smoke is so monumentally small it can't even be factored. Combined with all the other carcinogens in the air, there is no way to tell whether they developed lung cancer from second hand smoke or from a more dangerous form of pollution - or even the dust in their house.

Oh, and here's my proof. With references to back it up. Good game, but you lose

By the way, who the hell pays $6 for a pack of cigs? When I'm not rolling my own cigarettes (about 200 for $10), I can go to the CONVENIENCE STORE and buy a pack of Camel Lights for $3.05 after tax. In Tennessee, which has one of the highest sales tax in the nation and a recent 10 cent hike on cig prices.

I enjoy spraying RAID and girly foofoo perfumes on people. After all, if I am outside and they don't run when I chase them down with the can/bottle, then they are whiny f#ktards.

You have to contribute money ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$) to the campaigns of people who are willing to ban the use of tobacco in the U.S. just as they made the growing, possession, distribution and use of marijuana illegal.

If you are truly as adamant as you claim then start a referendum to ban tobacco.

Otherwise, STFU!

Government control of society isn't going to do anyone any good. Maybe if everyone would just try to be polite about this kind of stuff, and think a little bit, there wouldn't be such a problem.

Good post. Funny thing about this thread, all of these people probably consider themselves independent thinkers yet each one has been conditioned to reject smokers. Media brainwashing at its best (worst?).

When I was growing up there were plenty of non-smokers yet we didn't hear all of this crap being spouted now. I quit smoking about 6 years ago simply because I wanted to re-vitalize my respiratory system which seemed lagging as I got older. But I don't have any problems with smokers; I'm okay with not smoking in restaurants and not smoking in the workplace but other than that, all you non-smokers can STFU. If I met any of you brain-dead geeks on the street I'm sure I could find at least a dozen things about you that would make me want to vomit.

I won't presume to speak for all nonsmokers, however for me, the annoyance of having to walk thru a group of people smoking is enough to get my panties in a bunch. What you say may be true (the connection between cigarettes and lung cancer is undeniable, no matter what the figures are, by the way), but just because it won't harm me to walk thru a group of smokers doesn't mean that it it's a pleasant thing to have to do.
Put all of your studies aside (nonsmokers will always say that it's bad for you and smokers will always say it isn't that bad for you) and address the initial reason for this thread. Cigarette smoke stinks and people shouldn't have to be subjected to it if they don't want to. Even if smoking caused zero health problems, it's still affects other people.

Many perfumes to me stink, so does body odor, and so does tailpipe exhaust. You don't see the governments banning these things that are unpleasant to me. Simple fact is that there is no proof that says smoking WILL cause health problems. There is absolutely NO PROOF that second hand smoke WILL OR MAY cause lung cancer. I don't care about nonsmokers' feelings if they have to smell my cigarettes in the outdoors or in a smokeing permitted area. You people caused a problem when "solving" the problem by banning smoking in buildings.

I don't smoke. I hate the smell of it. Can't stand it. I'll agree all day long with those that say its nasty, gross, ect. It is. No doubt about it.

However, WHO am I to say that others can't do what they want? You say well it affects others. Yeah, so what? Get over it. It is fscking stupid that the government gets to decide where and how someone can SMOKE a cig. THAT IS STUPID!

If a business wants to allow smokers to smoke in their place of business, THAT SHOULD BE THEIR DECISION. WHY should government or you get to decide how they operate their business? Thats fscking stupid.

What happens when they decide to restrict something that you enjoy/are addicted to? That would suck eh? Same thing applies.

Sure, smokers SHOULD be considerate. They should try to avoid blowing smoke towards others. If they don't, call them the asshole they are and LEAVE THE AREA/PLACE OF BUSINESS.

Use some fscking common sense.

Im 28, and I smoke. I started stealing cigs from my dad when I was 15. I thought if he smoked, whats the big deal.
Well, let me tell you that I hate it, and wish that I never started. Im so addicted to these things that its not even funny. When I do not get a cig for a while, I get physically ill.

I've always tried to be considerate of people who do not smoke. I do not smoke in public places.
It is my bad habit, not theres and it will most likely kill me some day.

First, I wish you the best of luck breaking away from your addiction. I offer the following thoughts in the hope it will help you to succeed.

As you already know, breaking a chemical dependency is not easy. In fact, for many, such as yourself, it can be physically and emotionally painful. Therefore, the first step is to understand that this is something you will go through, either now, or later. You are already an addict, so you no longer a choice whether you will go through one piece of hell or another, only when that will happen.

Consider whatever discomfort you feel at the time as the price for getting out of the trap you are already in. The best reason to do it now is, the longer you wait, the higher the price will be. You will have done more damage to yourself, you will have less time and a lower chance of success to fix the damage, and you will have less of your life left to enjoy once you have beaten it.

Nobody can honestly tell you it is easy. IT ISN'T. It's just necessary. All I can tell you is, I am 61 years old, and I have personally watched good friends die ugly, painful deaths from tobacco related illnesses. Everyone dies sooner or later, but we don't have to volunteer for it.

I hope this helps. Good luck.
