which ones?

boondock saints was a pretentious violent fantasy for 16 year old boys (fight club did this much better, and i'll admit i loved it)

moulin rouge...i just can't stand musicals.

dogma had too much juvenile humor, but the observational humor about modern religion was good.

5th element... felt like a saturday morning cartoon (with nudity).

waiting for guffman...i LOVE the other movies these guys made, (a mighty wind, best in show) but guffman's humor was just too low key to be funny, or maybe you have to be into theater to "get it".

the others need no explanation

Here's three pretty obvious clues that your friends are morons:

1. They recommend the movie Van Helsing.
2. They recommend the movie Fear.com.
3. They recommend the movie The Butterfly Effect.

Yes, maybe too bold a statement. I was going to qualify it by saying one of the all time worst non-action, non-comedy movies. But even that leaves it a lot of competition like You've Got Mail.

Curious about your age, I confess.

I hated musicals, too. Until I was about 16, at which point I had to acknowledge...many of them are ACTUALLY pretty good. This was about the same point I stopped listening to exclusively one genre of music, as well. Probably related.

I "got it", thought it was funny at times, but overrated by the ATOT crew. I actually liked The Butterfly Effect because I had zero expectations going in and it overachieved - haven't seen many of the others on the list but agree with OP on the ones I've seen.

do all of you people actually have friends that recommended these crappy movies, or are you just rattling off movies you saw that you didn't like?

These friends are the same ones who recommended #1 on your list, Boondock Saints, which I thoroughly enjoy.

me too, i tried so hard to like napolean (since my bro knows the directors). it's got some good lines and i guess i "get it" but it's not something i could watch over and over.
A) If you don't watch Napoleon Dynamite more than once, then you WON'T "get it". That's the way that movie works: you watch it once, you think it's the dumbest thing you've ever seen, you start quoting the stupid lines, you watch it again, hilarity ensues...

B) The Big Lebowski is the funniest movie ever made. The lines are just brilliant. Call me an elitist prick (I could care less), but I honestly think that if you don't find that movie funny, you are either not intelligent enough to get it, or do not have a sense of humor that has developed enough.

C) 5th Sense is the worst movie of all time. The 5th Element is love? Holy fvcking sh1t that's lame. The lamest of the lame. Plus, you just knew it was coming, and when it happened, it was just as bad as it was in the million other movies where the "secret ingredient" was love. Jesus Christ... lame doesn't even begin to describe this movie, but it's the closest word in the English language.

D) How can you hate Waiting for Guffman and like Best in Show? That makes no sense. They're the same fvcking movie. I mean, NOBODY - and I honestly mean not one single person - has ever gotten one of those "mockumentaries" (Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman, Drop Dead Gorgeous, A Mighty Wind, etc.) and not found them ALL funny.

E) If you didn't like Highlander, I'm pretty sure that's grounds to be kicked off the boards.

1.Boondock Saints
2.Moulin Rouge
3.Dogma
4.Van Helsing
5.A Home at the End of the World
6.12 Monkeys
7.Fear.com
8.The 5th Element (i'll probably get flamed for this)
9.Highlander
10.Waiting for Guffman (i loved best in show though)
if you're not into music or culture, it's understandable that you disliked #2.
WTF are you talking about? Moulin Rouge was a sh1tty movie. In 5 years, there will be like 10 people left that give a flying fvck about that movie, just like Chicago.

<--- bitter person that thought ANYTHING deserved an Oscar over Chicago... musicals suck

1.Boondock Saints - awesome
2.Moulin Rouge - awesome
3.Dogma - awesome
4.Van Helsing - decent action flick
5.A Home at the End of the World - didn't see
6.12 Monkeys - good
7.Fear.com - didn't see
8.The 5th Element - awesome
9.Highlander - decent action flick
10.Waiting for Guffman - didn't see
11. The Butterfly Effect - good

I hate your tastes and my friends never recommend bad movies to me. But my sister does, because she recommends terrible movies like bowling for columbine that end up being crap instead of the entertainment I expect to see when I watch a movie.

Oh, and yea I really liked Moulin Rouge mainly because of the music. Especially that one song that they play during the credits, the name of which escapes me. Starts out really slow and then speeds up.

FreshFish cannot handle movies that are messed up, obviously. Many people can't. I loved the movie, but it's FAR too messed up for many.

OK, I read this like you're saying he's not "cultured" enough to like musicals... is that it? Because I frequent art galleries, I love plays, I listen to every type of music in the world (country music is not really a form of music, so it doesn't count), and I HATE musicals. Singing in the Rain and Jesus Christ Superstar (with the original London cast) is the only exception.

it depends, I don't take too many movie suggestions for the same reason because I will watch sappy movies just for a laugh or to get out while my brothers will only watch action/drama or other type movie which doesn't feature sap.

I can't justify spending another $4 to rent that movie to watch it a second time. It was almost physically painful to watch Napoleon muddle his was through social situations and life in general; I felt embarrassed FOR him.

Diffferent strokes for different folks. It had it's moments, but I didn't see what all the fuss was about. For both of those titles, people had recommended them and left me with the impression I'd cream my boxers after viewing just the first ten minutes. If I had watched them before being drowned with people telling me they were the greatest things since sliced bread, I imagine I would've appreciated both titles much more.
