thanks so much all you fellow anandteches & vets or relatives of vets. This is the only place I posted this (maybe you can check my credentials ... LOL I think I might have been like in the first dozen members here after Mr Anand himself

wasn't sure I'd even get a response ... btw the he did receive the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf cluster among other medals of honor.

My flag is flying outside ...today was his favorite day ... he loved going to church then coming home to watch football/baseball and read the Barrons & do his duties (yardwork/poolwork/financials)

thanks again fellows!

My condolences on the loss of your father :'^(

I get in a funk on occasion thinking about all the WWII vets that are dying off at an alarming rate. My father served at Los Alamos, and I had 2 uncles that were in the European theatre. When I picture a WWII vet, I imagine someone in their 60s with some gray hair. I know better if I think about it, but that's why it's always a surprise when I hear about the speed at which they're leaving. Anyway, any of you that know a vet should get their stories and world views while you can. Their unique perspective won't be around much longer....

One of my big regrets is not taking a tape recorder around and interviewing my dad and his friends about the war. My dad also dropped out of college to join the army air corps and flew B-17s. One of his friends served under Patton. Another one of his friends eventually commanded a nuclear carrier.

Lost my dad last year at 85. Pearl Harbor, Christmas Island, Wake Island and Burma. Bronze Star and Presidential Unit Citation among others. They even made a movie about his Burma outfit. Merril's Marauders, it was made in the late 60s so it's not on much anymore. He slogged for 3 months through the jungle with malaria and dysentery and was one of a hundred or so who made to their objective out of the original 1500. His captain gave him the flag from the Japanese airbase that was their final objective. Said he deserved it, then he passed out and when he woke up in the infirmary some replacement had stolen it. I almost totally lost it when they fired off the 21 gun salute at his funeral. They were truly the Greatest Generation.

My grandpa was born in 1922 as well and served as a machine gunner in Europe. I believe he was over there for a total of six days before being captured which resulted in him spending the rest of the war in a POW camp in Germany. I'm thankful that he's written a book covering his whole life and then a followup that covered the time during WWII in much greater detail so I don't have to rely on my sketchy memory. It was definitely a more difficult time then. My first child will be born in a couple of months and I sincerely hope that they will be able to meet him.

Thanks to your father for his service.

Your dad probably served with my FiL. He was in China, Burma, and India...IIRC, with Merrill's Marauders as well. <salute>

To call it selfless is a little disingenuous, since it can be argued that Germany was a threat to America.

here's to your father, racerx.

My mom passed away May 29 at 85. She had been married to two of those WWII vets, widowed twice. My dad served in the 4th Marine Division on Saipan, Tinian, Roi-Namur, Iwo Jima. These heroes leave us now all too often.

You sir apparently have not talked to either the civilians nor the people who served at that time. Selfless is just one of the many positive adjectives that could be used to describe that generation.

My grandpa died 2 years ago, he was at Iwo Jima, and he was also a writer. However I don't even know what he did, all I know is that he rarely spoke about WW2. He had cancer, but it wasn't the cancer that killed him, he finally just gave up and stopped eating. Guess guys like that don't die easily.
