That's generally the case now, too. It could be fun to throw points into some different stats/skills to just create a different kind of character, though.Originally posted by: zinfamous
traditionally, sneak is pretty useless. if you're into small guns, then focus on perception and luck. As I mentioned in the other thread, each previous game gets you power armor at some point, which when equipped will boost your strength, added to the likelihood of finding a doc that can permanently boost stats permanently. Perception increases your hit chance, and luck increases your criticals. Luck also increases your rare encounters--not sure if that's a factor in this one, but it allowed you to get the better weapons before.
strength doesn't affect damage from guns, so anything more than 5 was always a waste before. (as power armor + boosts would get you to 9-10 near the end of the game) Charisma can be lower than you think--put ~7 into intelligence, and tag speech.
Does this have the attribute that lets you boost all stats by 1 from the start? I always chose that, much better than "skilled," as skill points become rather meaningless the further you go.
I usually went with S: 5, P: 7-8, E: 4-5, C: 1-2, I: 7-8, A: 6-8, L: 7-9. I always tagged small guns, speech, and lockpick. In the previous games, that pretty much opened up all the possibilities and you become devastating with the rifles. Once you start finding energy weapons, start putting some points into that.
Does Fallout 3 limit your level max?
Oh yeah: this is all based on the design before Bathesda took over...so not sure how much those numbers apply now...

Were any of you who were skeptical about the big changes to Fallout actually impressed with the game once you got it? Is it really Fallout 3, or is it Oblivion 2?
i'd call it a Fallout mod for Oblivion.

And you'd be wrong.

why? i see tons of similarities to Oblivion in the game. hell, some aspects are downright exact copies of oblivion, considering it uses the same engine, i don't see how you could call it any different.

You know, Bioshock and Gears of War use the same engine. They're not so different, right?
Fallout 3 has a totally different attribute/skill system, different combat mechanics, and the premise for the game is completely different. The whole 'sneak' thing is a bit too much like Oblivion, but other than that IMO the game is different enough from Oblivion to leave its own legacy.

My Stats are
Strength=6 (How the hell could you get by with just 1 str) - increased carry, dialogue options
Perception- 4 (Confirmed- Does not affect accuracy just location of enemies on compass)
Endurance-5 (didn't touch this)
Charisma-1 (Not quite regretting this choice yet, but speech is definately very low)
Intellect-10 (Maxed for most skill points and dialogue options
Agility-8 (Sneaking and more AP)
Luck-7 (lots of things)
My character is a gunslinger. Small arms is up high with perks along with repair, science and lockpicking are up along with sneak. Level 6 right now, I sneak around with a silenced pistol and often get one shot sneak kills.
I originally wanted to be pure evil but it seems like you shut down alot of your early dialogue options. My only complaint about this build is the lack of speech success due to low speech skill points and a 1 in charisma. I get by though..I just don't get extra caps that I could usually..but so far that has not been a problem at all.
Yes, and those things that you listed are also the same in Fallout 1/2 (except for movement and the clunky inventory we used to have). Just because Bethesda did them the same as in Oblivion, doesn't mean it's bad. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.those games are made by different companies so the point is moot. or if you don't like that answer, at least the different companies bothered enough to make different uses of the engine. Bethesda couldn't be bothered to do anything but mod Oblivion with Fallout type stuff.
melee combat is exactly the same.
theft feature is exactly the same.
being able to pick up almost every worthless object is exactly the same.
Buying/selling is pretty much the same.
movement is exactly the same.
sneak is exactly the same.
inventory system is exactly the same.
dialogue trees are almost exactly the same.
karma/reputation system is almost exactly the same.
if you can't see the multitude of similarities (or just plain carbon copy) between Oblivion and F3 then you're either blind or stupid.
F3 is basically a mod for Oblivion.
Isn't there a mod for Counterstrike Source that makes it look like WoW or something? Is that a totally different game? I mean, they are using swords and armor instead of guns...

Here are my first impressions after playing 5 hours.
First of all the game had a hard time installing, but I think that is due to my DVD ROM. Its runs very good on my system but does have an annoying little background bug that pops up on the right side of the screen every so often. It has also crashed once.
As far as gameplay, well.... its ok. The VATS system is neat, but I have not had one instance where I did not go for the Head or Torso. Lots of different weapons is a nice touch too.
Graphics look pretty good, I like how everyone who ran Oblivion 2 years ago can now run this game at near max settings.
The radio could have more variety to the stations.
One major problem so far is that I feel like I am *still* running around in a world where I do quests that have no effect on the actual world itself. Oblivion felt this way BIG time.
Cool game, I will be enjoying it but I was expecting more than Oblivion in the future with guns. Im prob gonna sell it off after Im done with the first go around. I dont think I will be buying anymore Bethesda "Oblivion" games till they do some improvements to the A.I. and world.

Believe it or not, I have never played any Fallout game in my life.... ONe of those games that slipped through I guess, however reading what I bolded seems to be slightly discouraging because I didn't like that feeling in Oblivion. It was a cool game at first until this feeling settled in and I felt like it was all pointless. I guess I won't be buying this game.
Originally posted by: 9mak9I never played Oblivion but if you don't like doing side quests or running around and exploring then just go from main quest to main quest. RPGs are made with the pointless side quest aspect which i like because it adds more to the game and you can get more items and experience more characters that way. Makes you feel more involved in the overall game. I love the exploration factor of just going anywhere and finding any secrets/easter eggs and looking at the amazing detail they used. I would play half-life and use the gravity gun to shoot stuff all over the place

Many of the game features of Mass Effect were also carried over from KOTOR. Does that make it a bad game?

I do agree with you on the exploration factor. In Oblivion I loved finding that random tunnel and exploring what I can find and kill. After the 100th tunnel it did get slightly old. However the exploring was worth it.

I'd say Bioshock was more similar to Bioshock than Oblivion. It may just be the 50's feel though.
