Has anyone reached the 100 vault dweller milestone or higher?
As I don't have any Apple devices of my own, a friend of mine with and iPad Retina (not sure exactly what model it is, but it's maybe 18 months old) lent me his to try out the game. Overall, it's a really fun and easy vault-builder game, sort of RTS/Tower Defense -lite. The problem is when reaching midpoint in the game.
The problem is the performance after about 40 vault dwellers takes a nosedive - it gets so choppy (down to about 5fps at times), but there are no options of any kind to reduce quality settings or configure anything. I put it in airplane mode and turned off just about every background app I could find. I made it as high as 60 vault dwellers last night and had to quit because even managing resources became an exercise in frustration. I found that if you can zoom out far enough to the max extent, it changes from a 3D render to a 2D sprite overview which grants a noticeable performance improvement, but it doesn't last long.
There are occasional mishaps (fires, radroach infestations, and raider attacks) that forces focus to zoom into a particular room in the vault which makes the frame rate dip even further, resulting in the touch responsiveness to completely disappear. So when you need to act fast, you are not able to do anything. Likewise, when building new rooms, it overrides the zoom, making it so choppy as to make room placement difficult.
Overall, like I said, it's a fun game, but it's just not playable on this particular iPad. Maybe it works better on the newest iPads and iPhones? Good thing it's free? Anyway, if this game ever becomes available on Steam or as a part of Fallout 4, the performance issues will probably disappear. Are there any iOS emulators that are any good?
