Fan dead ::::: computer shuts down

I have hp pavilion xh156.

I guess the fan is not working. SO the computer boots up but shuts down abruptly after a random time ranging between 1 to 10 minutes depending on the outside temperature.

Is there any way to check if the fan is not working or the circuit is wrong . Can I replace it myself given the fact I have never opened a laptop case...

Please help

does the laptop by any chance have a warranty still?

If you're pretty confident and have the right tools you can try to see if you can replace the fan. First, try to find a replacement fan before you waste your time opening it up.

If you decide to change the fan be very carefull as the screws are very very small that hold the hsf to the chip and they drop easy not a good thing to happen.
