it's kinda like Army of Darkness, you love it or you hate it
Bah. Don't compare it to Army of Darkness. Cube was just a dark movie with slight Sci-Fi theme. No real story, just a limited attempt at an Orwellian future event, extrapolated from the bureaucratic workings of the government/military-industrial complex.
In response to some of the other statements made here:
No it doesn't rank with Dark City, or any other movie with a budget and a decent story. It was all shot as the cast moved from one identical cube room to another. They probably didn't have to build more than a half dozen little rooms, if even that much. The only execption is the very end, showing the outside of the cube.
Yeah, I think a psychological action/thriller would be a decent description for this. With better acting and dialogue, it would have been much better.
No, there wasn't much of any character development. Character development describes how the characters change in response to situations in the story. All we saw was more of their character being revealed under stressful conditions.
I think bertrandom has the gist of it. An interesting concept that was worth watching once. If they managed a better story with better acting, I might feel differently, but they didn't.
Finally, it's not much of a Hot Deal. Regardless of how much you liked the movie, unless there's some special pricing or limited availability I didn't notice mentioned, it's just a re-release effort to make a little extra money.
IMO,
D.
PS. All that being said, I did enjoy the movie, but I wouldn't sit through it a second time. Too bad it wasn't done better. It's definitely not for everyone.
