troy, do you work for fatwallet?
yes, but I'm posting this for the anandtech community (i get no benefit for finding talent)
Right now we're not in Rockton, we're in Rockford.
But in January we'll be moving to our brand new headquarters.
Our office will be the best thing in Rockton i'm sure.
Luckily its just a 15 minute drive to Rockford.
As for what the interns came up with, I cannot say. But I can say that it was impressive - and one of the interns is now full time (another works for google)
Our interns and employees are treated VERY well, and not paid via coupons or paypal
Bragging about the 'best thing in Rockton'? lol
Access to Chicago from Rockton or visa versa is a lark...its in the middle of nowhere and not even very close to a highway (94). That's 2 hours with no traffic. Who goes places that take 2 hours...its a 4 hour commitment minimum. The best you can hope for is an annual company picnic at 6 flags.
Don't get me wrong, FW should be proud of its success and growth, but holy moly...ROCKTON, IL??? As far as Chicagoland goes, its a distant mirage at best. Milwaukee and Madison are probably easier to get to than Chicago.
I'm sure its a great place to intern since its a short sentence with a successful company, but unless you're a polar bear who loves the arctic air coming down from canada, and loves to live in baron lands, its a considerable sacrifice in lifestyle.
No wonder why you guys are so successful, you probably get as much work done in walmart shopping for groceries, since 1/2 the town is there each night.

The "best thing in rockton" statement was sarcastic (which is why i followed it with 'luckily its just a 15 minute drive to rockford')
As far as access to chicago, I-90 is 10 minutes away. Chicago is just over an hour away.
Sacrifice in lifestyle might be an issue if you're used to living in a downtown area of a city. But Rockford (which is where most of the employees live) is similar to a suberb. All the major box stores and restaurants, lots of local businesses. There's even a nightlife.
Let's just say that in Rockford, guns are the hottest selling item in Walmart, and Walmart doesn't even stock them. As for nightlife, it definitely has a nightlife, but it starts at 8:00am for most local folks. In fact, most locals stop drinking when the 24 hour 7/11 locks up for the night.

Not really sure what any of that is supposed to mean, but it's obvious you have something against Rockford or something against Fatwallet.
I'm certainly not a fan of Rockford either, but its far from the worst place ever. (but then again, i grew up in a town smaller than Rockton)

Yes, I don't like Rockford and consider it the armpit (nordic style) of Illinois. I have nothing against FW, actually quite the contrary, but why its leaders would take the company from the armpit of illinois to such a nomadic-toejam-freeze-your-@ss-off-for-nothing place like Rockton is no less than baffling, since it certainly isn't doing it for its ee's way of life, (muchless for attracting new ee's.)
Just by moving there, its probably going to raise the small community's real estate prices by 10% (atleast for the properties that are fortunate enough to have electricity and running water.)
Think I'm sh!tting you? There isn't even a starbucks in Rockton. Not enough? There isn't even a McDonalds in Rockton! Seriously, what kind of nomadic hippies are running fatwallet? Dang, you'd think they'd expand to a place that's atleast inhabited.
I've not been spotted at one for a long time either, but lets be real...who wants to move somewhere that you have to drive for miles to do/see/eat anything. I just moved from a place like that and it gets to be hell after a while...and I'm not even young anymore.Originally posted by: danzigrules

Nothing wrong with that, if anything it should be a plus since starbucks and mcdonalds both suck.
