I'm very pleased with the game now. Well, sort of pleased. I keep getting my arse kicked, so now that's pissing me off! lol
Good for you! Ran the demo at 1024x and didnt have any noticable framerate issue. At 1280x, I did (in moderately moving CQC). I've a similar system with a P4 2.8 and 9800np. I'll have to check that Shadow setting. For me at the 3rd difficulty level (challenging?) the bad guys don't seem to tough but then again I'm not taking more than a few at a time. Sometime at close quarters the bad guys seem to wait for me to take the first shot. I got a kick blasting the guys atop the aircraft carrier from long range in the patrol boat.

Just love all that foliage.

That's kinda dumb, 2k4 retails for $40USD I think, and when it and BF:V came out, they were both on sale for $30 at Fry's, as well as Far Cry is right now. I sure wish FC came on DVD in the states though.

Ditto that, 5 CDs for both FC and UT2k4 is getting rediculus.
I'm glad the games are advanced enough to require all that data, but give us a DVD option for gods sake.
Why Europe? What do they have that the US does not (regarding computers)?

the ut2k4 you're probably seeing on ebay is the SE 2 DVD Disk set and is being released in limited quantities.

Alright, finally picked up this game and so far I love it.... having some problems though. When the game is running it runs okay... I have to pretty low settings but I'm not sure what the problem is. Every once in a while the game will freeze for a couple seconds then come back then freeze... etc... etc... And it's not just in action intense parts. My system is a little old and I was wondering if anyone can tell me if that is the issue:

I'm running:

AMD 1GHZ
ATI Radeon 8500 64MB
512MB RAM

And I tried shutting down antivirus and other stuff in background...

Thanks alot

Tried FarCry with 512MB ram and experienced the same issues as you did. Came home today with another stick of 512MB ram and those problems have all but disappeared. Resolution is 1024x768 with settings on high minus the shadows.

Try the inexpensive ram upgrade first to see if that helps.
Love the game BTW!

Also, will you be able to play multiplayer w/ 56k dial-up?

The box says broadband required, haven't tried it over my 56K but the single player experience is well worth it(I paid SRP at EB- $39.99).

I'm only about half way through this game and...
Holy Shiite! It's pretty frigging difficult.
I personally think Crytek did a great job.
The visuals are great, the game plays forever and after a few hours of play I'm drained.
It is a system hog though, to really enjoy the graphics requires a honking computer.
Well, gotta go to work now, must...put...weapon...down.

I just got to a part that seems nearly impossible.

I am on the Volcano level (think I'm near the end?). Where you go out to get the serum (trying not to be too specific so no spoilers). They load you up fully with weapons and armor. But there are about 10 big rocket guys, and I don't know how many of the guys that jump around and shoot. There is no way I can kill them all, but I don't even know where to go. I die as soon as I step off the ledge.

AI is horrible, Thief, Unreal, SOFII all had better AI. The most annoying AI thing, when a baddie is laying down (like a sniper) if you shoot at them they ALWAYS stand up. I've gotten this regardless what difficulity setting I play.

the outdoor levels it's cool how they sort of surround you, but they're still dumb "realistic" only makes them harder to kill, not any smarter.

indoor levels are horrible, boring design. OHHH I'm in a lab! (that's new)

the outside ones look great, it plays smoothly. I absolutely hate the weapon system, It's cool how you can drop weapons to get a new one, but EVERY FPS I've ever played. it goes 1 = weakest weapon 10 = highest
FC should release a patch that auto assigns your weapons based on strength. No matter how many times I press "4" I never expect the pistol. So, I resort to having to drop all my weapons and pick them up in order so I can keep my 10+ year FPS logic intact

The save points is great, but there are a few spots where you have to go way too far, with too much action going on to hit the save. The river boat level with the helicopters and dudes on the bridges with the Rocket Launchers is a perfect example.

Is this game hard? no, not really. I got stuck on the room with the sprial floor because the baddies were spot on with the snipping. I also got stuck before that because I didn't press the three levers in order, and it wasn't letting me get past the last door (bug?) took me a long time to figure this out.

The indoor AI is horrible, I can stand infront of a door and wait for the baddies to keep coming, I had a pile really high of dead dudes who apparently didn't see the other 6 bodies right there and decided to stand there and look for me, even tho I was 2 feet away (but ducking)

outside AI has a lot of little junky aspects. 2 guards are talking, I'm 5 feet away behind a barrel, I pop up and shoot one in the head. He goes FLYING and the other dude is "hay! is everything alright?" did he not hear the gun? or at least wonder why the dude he was talking to was all of a sudden on the ground bleeding?

most annoying AI bug for me, if baddies are chasing me in a jeep and I drive by the water and jump out of my jeep right before it hits the water, they will follow in their jeep, and die instantly, because hummm none of them can swim?

I am stuck on the Valcano level (last one) but besides that I haven't found the game all that hard, and I haven't really found any spots where I "had to" use stealth.you could duck in some brush and the badies would just go "I know your around here somewhere!" The AI besides that is above average, but that's not saying much. Thief is what 6 years old? And has far better AI.

in the end FC is just a better looking "find the key card" FPS with no real innovations.

QueBert, have you written a review of Call of Duty as well? I'd be interested to see what you have to say about that too.

I am SO sick of people complaining that there is now "innovation" is games. It seems to me that whenever a game company does do something new, in THIS day and age, they're met with a chorus of "It's too different!" Exactly how many more EXCITING things can be modeled in a shooter? I don't hear anyone whining about HL2 and D3 being the same old fare, even though we ALL know they will be. If jaded is the hip thing to be nowadays for some people, why not just avoid computer games all together? It would be better for all concerned.

Just beat the game.

Man that was tough at the end (though the end guy wasn't tough at all... one rocket shot and he was done... but leading up to him!!!).

Great game

My COD review *much shorter*

hated the animation, my biggest problem with FPS's is shotty animation, or having non rag-doll for deaths. Shooting a baddie in the head to have them fly down, only to jump back up 9/10 out of 10 was not cool to me. Did this game had damage zones? I didn't like the difficulty, the enemy was too good of a shot.

The sound was excellent, guns sounded great especially.

I loved some of the levels, especially the boat one.

The game was short, as everyone else has said already, so that's nothing new. But I felt no build up to the "end" I honestly had no idea the last level was the last level till I beat it. When it was over I felt cheated, had it been the same length but gave me some indication "this is the end coming!" I would have at least felt some accomplishment.

I won't spoil the ending, but it SUCKS! *to say the least*

COD was overall fun for me, but I feel about COD like I feel about Halo, it's a better game for people who are newer to FPS's. I've played everything from the original Wolfenstien to Ken Laberynth. I haven't seen anything that really stood out, minus graphics and sound, since Swat III. But Swat III is more mission based, so that's not a fair comparision.

the last FPS I truely enjoyed was probably No One Lives Forever. So the gameplay wasn't any different. But it had tons of styles, and the cut scenes were so funny. Oh, and it had a bad ass ending.

I like games with "character" and maybe it's just me, but I'm at the end of Far Cry and it's hard for me to remember who I am in the game (name wise) besides some guy with really poor one liners. I don't feel like I'm a person. in NOLF I was Anne Archer and it added to the whole experince.

"what is that thing?" - him seeing a 10 foot MONSTER on a table, he didn't seem scared at all haha.

I hear you, I think AI is what they need to focus on. I've been gaming all my life, and these FPS's are either too easy on the regular settings, or too hard on hard, and that's only beause they pump up the damage baddies take.

I think in terms if AI they could do a lot, little things like having enemies peer around a corner instead of running out into the middle of a door where you can blast them every time.

Far Cry's AI wasn't challenging because if you shoot at them, they'd never duck or be catious just run around screaming "I know you're around here somewhere"

I must have gotten some other, better game by the name of FarCry. I open fire on an enemy and all the guys around him scatter for cover and have a group trying to flank me while staying under cover as much as possible. I've actually had a few times where I *thought* I cleared out a group only to advance and get mowed down by a couple of guys who stayed put and quiet long enough for me to assume they weren't there anymore. The AI isn't perfect but Unreal? Give me a break, that was poor even for its era. For this type of game, the AI is hands down the best I've seen- it doesn't use the lazy @ss 'aware' switch- once an enemy is aware of you they know exactly were you are until they die.

The save points is great, but there are a few spots where you have to go way too far, with too much action going on to hit the save. The river boat level with the helicopters and dudes on the bridges with the Rocket Launchers is a perfect example.

Actually thought that was the easiest level, just go.
