"Boils down to minor stutters" my ass. It's all over the game and it's killing the gameplay....

With or without the hotfix for you?

Did you try playing without the hotfix? I think the hotfix was mostly to get Crossfire working. If you try it...do a clean install of the previous driver.

That is an idea. I'll do it a bit later.

Ok, so I uninstalled Catalyst, did a driver sweeper, reinstalled 8.10 and didn't used the hot fix this time.
My results are:

* Average Framerate: 32.86
* Max. Framerate: 50.75
* Min. Framerate: 21.74

But, now, the game is totally unplayable. I loaded my saved game, which is the first checkpoint in the game and there I have like 10 fps, is much worst then before. It's just a slide show. It seems that ATI has this game screwed up. We need 8.11 or another hot fix for it to become playable.

i just installed it; No hotfix need, all FC2 DX10 setting ultra, very high - whatever is maxed as possible - with 4xAA at 19x12 [and 16xAF forced in the CP, even though i haven't noticed if it works]

Stock 4870x2 with rig in sig gets 61.52 av/85.22 max /44.91 min averaged over 3 runs in the first Ranch [small] built-in demo

ZERO micro stutter observed with HD4870x2 and Cat 8-10 [no hotfix]

i have much benching to do .. i'll be back with 4870/1GB results and 4870x3 CF results also .. later on i will run 280GTX

Is anyone else getting what error8 is getting with ATI cards (besides Xfire)?

Might be a good time to do some memory usage testing. Can anyone who has this game find out how much texture memory is being used at highest settings? I wanted to see if 512MB is a limitation for this game. And if the 640/768/896/1GB cards have an advantage at the same settings. I mean the stuttering of course. not fps.

What's up with the 9800 GX2 in the OP's first card review? Is that a driver issue or faulty readings?

Sure, i'd love to. How do you measure it reliably in Vista?
-sadly i do not have any 512MB cards - except for a 2900xt; all are 1GB.

Unfortunately, we can't AFAIK, because of the way Vista handles video memory virtualization. Normally, I'd use Riva Tuner to measure vid mem usage, but looks like it's not possible with Vista.

One thing you can to Apoppin, is to try this game with your 4870512 at max settings, and then again with your 4870 1GB with same settings.

you didn't read all my post

finally, 16xAF appears to have almost no penalty nor does 8xMSAA; even Wide-Tent 16x-32x !
- it is smoother with AF and maxed out filtering

I'm getting the same stuttering issue as error8. It'll freeze and skip forward for a split second every few seconds, and it's extremely annoying.

I'm also getting framerates a lot lower than I expected... DX10, 1680x1050 maxed, I'm getting about 14/25/40 min/avg/max (ranch small). I thought I might be CPU limited, so I forced power settings to keep my CPU throttled down to 2GHz. Lo and behold, my min framerates slightly improved, which makes no sense.

edit: Just ran some tests at 1280x800. Virtually all the stuttering disappeared, so maybe I was running out of framebuffer. The game becomes more CPU limited at 1280, showing a big difference between 2 and 3 GHz (27 vs 34 FPS). I also reran 1680 with AA off, and got some stuttering, but less than at 4xAA. Framerates were decent (22/31/47).

I still don't really understand why my 1680 4xAA results were so much lower than the article's findings, especially considering that I'm GPU limited at those settings (my results with AA off are worse than theirs with AA on).

That sure sounds like the problem. You and error8 are 512, apoppin reports no issues with 1GB, and the first chart in OP indicates larger frame buffers really help.

I don't have the game yet, but I could pick it up (as I absolutely planned to anyway) and compare 9800GTX+ 512 vs. GTX280 for stuttering (fps aside).

@ Apoppin: Oops, I skimmed. I thought you were trying out Trifire with a 4870X2 and a 4870 512? I know you got the 4870 1GB, but I didn't realize you got rid of the 512.

Yep

i DID compare X3 with a 512MB 4870 and X3 with "true" CF with the 1GB 4870 ..

since i already established the performance delta between them, there wasn't much reason for me to keep my 512MB version

and i can run my 2900xt compared to a 8800GTX .. so we can still see FB limitations; you can also do it by lowering resolution

This is from a PCGameshardware review:
"So if you don't plan to run the Africa shooter on a Crossfire system in DX9, you should stay with the 8.9 WHQL. During our tests Far Cry 2 was running faster with this driver than with the Catalyst 8.10 or the two Hotfixes. "

Huh, that's weird. Thanks for the heads up; I'll try 8.9 when I get a chance tomorrow night.

Well that is sad. I have to reinstall the drivers again. How on earth do they manage to fuc** up the drivers so badly? Thanks for this advice, thilan. I was about to wait for cat 8.11 for this game.
