Fastest Hard Drive

What's the fastest Serial ATA hard drive on the market right now? Is it the Raptor 10,000rpm? I don't want to spend more then $220 Canadian and the drive size can't be any smaller then 20gigs. I was thinking of the 36.6 gig raptor but I want to make sure it's the fastest drive for loading games and copying files. Are there any updated benchmarks comparing the top contenders? Thanks for any info.

The fastest SATA hard drive is currently the Raptor 74GB 10000RPM, not the 36GB.

I third Nohr's response, but I'm biased because I have the drive and love it. Seems fast during large file loads as well as every day Windows tasks.

All other SATA drives are pretty much the same. 7200RPMs are pretty much the same speed yo. Only thing that would offer a big performance difference is probaly the Maxtor Maxline III with the 16MB cache.

I heard the raptor is available in 15000rpm speeds. Cant find it anywhere though. Any clue where I could obtain it? Pentium Guy, is the Maxtor Maxline III faster then the Raptor 36.6?

the only harddrives that are available in 15,000 rpm speed are that use the scsi connections.

Raptor 36.6 isn't fast, in fact it's as fast, if not slightly faster than a modern 8MB Buffer SATA drive. Raptor isn't available at 15K rpm, but there are plenty of SCSI drives for that, you would need an SCSI Host Adapter for this though.

Yeah, I heard the new hitachi was good too, and there was also an article on it in maximum pc. but 500gigs is gonna cost a ton.

In file transfer performance, because of the higher aerial density
but raptor still is unbeatable in application loading, windows loading, searching and other access time intensive uses

The 74GB Raptor is the fastest, but it's shocking value for your money. You can get 2x200GB drives for the same price.

Exactly. Noobs are obsessed with benchmarks. If I can't "feel" a noticeable improvement with normal windows activities, then it's not worth the extra $!

the raptor hands down...and while I have 5 at home...id say save your money and get a seagate, and then buy the gigabyte i-disk when it comes out....

BTW the next gen raptor press release was releasded a while ago....15,000RPM, 16mb cache, like 2ms seek time :Q

Any idea when the raptor 15,000 will be avaliable to the public? Also, why the hell is the 76gig ffaster then the 33.6 raptor? The both have the same specs except of course the drive space.

The 74 GB raptor was released after the 36 GB version, and the performance specs are slightly better, although probably not noticeably better. I have a few of each and all the computer i have used them on are so fast that i can't even see any reason to compare them.

Does anyone have a link to some info on the 15000 rpm raptor? It seems that alot of people have heard of this, but i can't find any info on the web.

74gb Raptors suck as far as bang/buck goes. I bought them mostly out of curiousity. They are only worth it, if you have the best of everything else (ram,cpu,video,etc) and have some extra cash to burn. And yes they are faster than 7200rpm drive (duh) as well as the 37gb raptor.

Firing Squad also tested the T7K250s and they beat out the Raptors in most tests.

15k SCSI drives in a RAID array will outkill any raptor drives, and there is no such thing as a 15k raptor. Raptor isn't the best bang for the buck, a few seconds performance and that much money for less than half the GB you could get. You can get an NCQ SATA II drive with nearly quadrouple the GB's for the price of a Raptor 74GB.

The best is never the cheapest, and very rarely the best bang for buck either. For ATA, the overall performance leader is still the 74GB Raptor, despite the odd backlash the drive has been receiving on these forums in recent months. Not making financial sense to you, does not make it a slower drive than the competition.

There is no announced 15k Raptor. 2ms seek time? What were you smoking when you made up that stat?

Yes, there very good drives. Beat out the raptor 74gb on app and gaming load times. Lazy so i dont feel like searching but Anandtech has a review on this HD comparing it with others and it comes up on top with alot of the benchmarks.

I would say buy a 250gb w/ NCQ. Best bang for buck
