I 'll start:

Win98 se Because it was da bomb. I only reinstalled once in the final 4 years I used it as my primary OS. There was enough info on the WEB and in books for me to surgically repair the OS. I still to this day run the same install that I put there in 1998. My OS has so many customisations and changes that I would never be able to recreate them. I have 3 images of that OS as it is for that very reason.

Windows 7 I've been a Microsoft beta tester for the past 8 years. Vista from a code perspective is much improved over XP. However there are many many things that could be improved especially in making the UI more intuitive and cohesive. Vista is also what I like to call a kitchen sink model where everything including the kitchen sink is installed and running for the users benefit. Windows 7 includes changes to both of these key items. Microsoft will also be using a firmer hand when it comes to driver certification with Windows 7. Since the driver model is the same as Vista all Vista users will benefit.

BEos and now Haiku

Wow what can I not say. This os would have, should have been the best thing since sliced bread. The reason we don't have it now, is a lack of focus and poor marketing. Haiku looks to be only a year or two from reaching R1 which is the milestone where they would be 100% feature complete with the Origional BEos R5. What possible purpose could this OS serve in this day and age.

"Netbooks" Imagion an ASUS EEE that is instantly responsive with the ability to run H263 without video assist. Now imagion if they did give it hardware assist.

Most every major feature in OSX, VISTA and WINDOWS XP was in the 1998 BEos.

Mulit-Core support....Yep
No software RAM limit...Yep 32bit limited in the release version, a 64bit developer version was planned back in 1998.
Pre-emptive multitasking...Yep
Integrated search...Yes
Vector Graphics support...Yep
Fully journaled 64 bit file system...Yep
Antialising built into the font system...Yep

Welcome to 1998 people, BEos had it. Haiku is picking up where they left off.

If you have an old PC install an image of BEos R5 MAX on it. You will understand what I am saying instantly. The only analogy I can give is Windows 95 running on a 4GHZ pentium and a high speed SSD drive. YES it reacts that fast.

This OS is extremely focused on multimedia and gaming. When it critical mass I will be waiting.

Ubuntu

my favorite nix...
Almost there.....This OS is getting closer and closer to being a viable choice for users. I still spent 30 hours getting 8.04 to work on my HP 8510. The wireles nic light still doesn't work as it's a kernel issues tied to the new Intel wireless drivers.
The point is Ubuntu is ALMOST ready. I give it 2 more years before its up to WINDOWS XP pre-service pack one level of "user friendliness". I use it as my OTHER OS.

As the guys from BEos origionally said, linux is a collective of small programs glued together. Ubuntu is getting pretty good at making glue.

ReactOS

What's that you ask. Its a open source windows clone that is binaries compatible with Microsoft Windows. That means you can use windows driver in this OS.

Is it illegal? Nope Microsoft and its experts check ReactOS out periodically to make sure they arn't using any Microsoft code. So far so good.

Imagion Windows 2000 with the bugs squashed, direct X added, and ever poor desicion microsoft implemented given a thorough going over. That's the closest explaination I can give.

If your not a geek you may even think it was WINDOWS. There are small differences but users don't care.

ReactOS is currently in Alpha and should be Beta by Jan 2009. Release 1.0 should be available 2010. One last note, yes it runs on a Pentium 90 with 32mb of RAM and a 2 meg video card. The price is free my friend.

No support for old Microsoft OS's, no problem React OS is going to be there for you.

Never really a big fan of Windows 98. XP has been fabulous for me. Recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 (to dual boot with XP Pro SP3) on my laptop and have switched to using it as my main OS. It has a few quirks, but overall, it's pretty awesome. The most annoying quirk is Flash - audio won't play with flash unless my audio player is stopped and then the audio player won't play sound again until I restart my browser which was running Flash. I think it's mostly the crappy implementation of Flash by Adobe on Linux systems that's the main culprit.

Never really was a fan of Windows 98 either, unstable and drivers were a pain in the rear to maintain

I had a hard time parting ways with Windows 2000 but Windows XP finally won me over. The transition to Vista was easier as it has been a rock solid OS. I haven't had a single freeze or crash due to the OS in almost a year usage.

Nice list, OP.

ReactOS is a cool idea -- I'll be keeping my eyes open for its evolution. Unfortunately I think it is sort of falling behind the curve in that a lot of newer applications will probably refuse to work with it due to its incompatibilities and how people seem to write installers that force applications to fail installation even if the OS itself would be actually very compatible if the installer just worked (e.g. stuff not running on XP 64 or Server 2003 or Win2K or WinNT even though it'd work on XP and the others too in reality).

FreeBSD -- great OS for stability, portability, security.

OpenBSD -- great OS for security and compactness.

Ubuntu -- a nice desktop OS, almost perfect, though I wish they had more of Fedora's security features, and had DVD ISO image releases.

Fedora -- my favorite LINUX due to its advanced technology / security features while having all the usual LINUX capabilities. A little weak on the multimedia stuff compared to Ubuntu and SUSE but overall the one I trust more.

OpenSOLARIS -- a little behind LINUX in the application compatibility and modernness of versions of some of the desktop applications, but it is catching up fast. Its claim to fame is its great security and server oriented capabilities, the excellent ZFS filesystem, et. al.

Vista -- I'd say it is my favorite of MS's past offerings, but that's not saying much. It is nice to FINALLY have a sometimes workable 64 bit OS, but really IMHO it is "too little, too late", I feel like I lose a great deal of capability when I boot from LINUX into VISTA. Browser, email, calendaring, office applications, a powerful shell, CD/DVD burning from ISO images, soft RAID, file synchronization / management, good advanced free backup options, good media center applications, full security / open file sharing, etc. all seem to be things I'd either have to replace, buy, or download/add on Vista whereas on most LINUX distributions these are just "right there" or super easily available in higher functionality / lower cost versions than Microsoft offers. Feels like LINUX is like 10 years ahead of Vista 64 Ultimate unless you add about $500 worth of 3rd party software and a bunch of freeware (like Firefox over IE7, Thunderbird over MS's mail, etc.) to make Vista more tolerable.

RSTS, RSX, VMS, CP/M .. Ah nostalgia.. those were the days.

MacOS .. nice enough OS; I might buy it if I didn't have to run it on Apple hardware. I'd rate it higher than Vista anyway. I'd prefer a more fully supported (by application authors/vendors) LINUX, though over either.

Arch Linux: Its really slimmed down so I can have absolute micromanagement over what goes on. Keep it simple, strip out everything you don't need, stuff a good package manager in, and that's Arch.

Vista64: Hey, it's pretty, it's secure, and it works quickly on my computer. After a reinstall, I'm blazing.

Windows XP - Easiest OS to use ever. I've never really had any problems with this OS: it's been fast, stable, and easy to use since its release and has only gotten better with each service pack.

Debian Stable - Great OS for set-it-and-forget-it applications. I use it as a Samba file server and I don't remember the last time I had to reboot it.

Ubuntu: So easy my mother is running Linux!! They made it so simple. I would pay for it if I had to.

Vista: I know, I know, not everyones favorite but I like it.

Win2K3: Ran it for years as my primary OS. Didn't like XP at release so stuck with 2K3! Win2K to Win2K3 to Vista!!

BeOS: These were the days!!! I had no idea someone else picked it up. Can't wait!

Basic: All forms that ran on the first pc before there were even disk drives. Just turn on and use, no loading involved.
Dos: functional and did only what you needed it to , nothing bundled with it
Beos: Had potential but MS and others snuffed it out quick.
Win2k: Still a great OS capable and a very small memory footprint.
Winxp: yeah it had its problems when it was released, but its become very stable and useful.

Windows XP by far, never had much issues with it. FreeBSD in second, when I feeling like getting into geek mode but never had much use for it. Hmm and finally probably Linux Mint, had a lot of problems with Ubuntu and display on my notebook (ATI graphics) but Mint booted right up.

OS/2 - Absolutely adored it, used it from verion 2.0 to 4.0. I was absolutely blown away when I realized that I could still use my computer while formatting a floppy disk... Multitasking ftw!

Linux - Been using it exclusively since transitioning from OS/2, currently running Arch. Amazed how far it has progressed over the years. Still can be frustrating at times trying to get recently released hardware working. I just ordered a new laptop and I'm not looking forward to fighting with the install, who knows I just might get lucky.

Windows - No opinion, haven't used it since 3.1

xp, but my biggest problem with XP is that if you didnt install it "right", something would always have a screw loose. the install is not streamlined either, meaning that i can't leave it on overnight and come back the next day, i have to click thorough a bunch of stuff, but i guess that's been a problem with all windows until vista.

Windows 2000 is my favorite. OpenSUSE 11.1 will likely be a good one as well (11 does not work properly with my hardware). I am also excited about the next release of OpenSolaris.

That is so true, never quite mastered the whole XP install.

I've got a dozen voicemail systems running 24/7/365 sitting on 6.22 and 4~8 MB of ram.
It still gets that job done:thumbsup:
I'll add a vote for early freebsd, it was my first venture into a CLI only server.
