Is your room situated on the edge of a large cliff or turbulent body of water?

I like how it has to be a large cliff or turbulent water. Because if it was tossed down a small cliff he is expected to rappel down or if it's non turbulent water he is expected to swim after it and retrieve it.

I'd wade through a few feet of water for my favorite pen.

Waterford, pelikan, or monteverde ball point or rollerball. Always lost pens until I bought these. Now I always carry a pen

Pentel Rollerball pens from about 20 - 25 yrs ago. Still have mine and able to get refills from Pentel even to this day. Carried them all over the world back then when I used to fly and never had a leak or failure to work until empty. Marry Christmas and the Best of 2015 to all.

I once bought a very expensive pen, thinking that it would help me get a job in a prestigious company. That didn't work. It was Montblanc, around $50 in 1976. You could use it with cartridges or draw from a bottle of ink.

Most of my pens I've found, dozens of them.

My favorite now are Parker T-Ball Jotter, they aren't super cheap, but not very expensive either. The refills are large, so you don't have to replace them often. I bought a box of 10 German made refills, Schneider, on ebay. With a quality refill, they function beautifully for years. The body of the pen is nice and rugged, never a problem.

For an everyday pen I like to take a cheapie and cut down the barrel and ink insert so that the entire thing is about 3" long, and I keep that in my pants pocket. A full length pen doesn't feel comfortable in a pants pocket. I've done this for years with dozens of pens. I lose them, I make more from pens I find. I always find enough to keep me in ample pens.

standard ballpoint BIC.
My problem with BIC is that they stop functioning. I bought a box of them and had to toss most after a while (I suppose more than a year) because they stopped writing. Just crap.

I have one of those space pens developed for astronauts, that you can use upside down. The refills are pressurized. I've had it for many years and it's still working fine.

Hate pens... But if I had to choose, a Pilot V Ball grip. They POS just pours ink out, almost never need to scratch unless it's dying. Bad thing is it smudges a lot because it takes a bit of time to dry.

When I was in school (graduated 1971) I favored the Parker Jotter.

I used to like the Montefiore pens with the Schneider Top Ball refills. But the caps did not want to stay on the back of pen all the time. It needs to be there to properly balance the feel. So I recently switched over to a Cross Edge series pen which takes similar type refills (can not use the Schneider refills, as they won't fit) . You simply pull to open the pen and it is always balanced.

Mine is a Lamy 2000. I use Noodler's Ink mostly as it's virtually impossible to alter. I had the misfortune of working with someone who made a serious mistake and attempted to alter evidence to blame another. It was a huge friggin mess which eventually worked out but I would not have wanted to be the guy he tried to blame.

What kind of dung beetle tries to blame someone else for their mistakes? The closest I've come to doing that is saying "I dunno what happened", when I really had a pretty good idea of where it went south :^D

Cooking data, and blaming me for a serious mistake is asking for after hours meeting in the parking lot...

Someone almost died because of a mistake and so the evidence was altered. That resulted in immediate dismissal and probably loss of license and I would imagine a lawsuit. It wasn't at the location I worked, but after that I decided I'd get the Lamy years ago. Maybe paranoia, but all you have to do is see the misery that attempted forgery caused to be more cautious. There's a huge variety of fountain pen inks in bottle form and there are some which are virtually impossible to alter undetected. After I got the pen I fell in love with it. I have crappy writing, and using a fountain pen requires a certain technique and slowing down, which makes my penmanship less awful.

felt tip pens
-don't work as well with carbon copy (tip is softer than ball points)
+don't dry out/get messed up when in a hot car all summer (80-90+ F)
-dries faster than gel

the other pens i used would stop working too well in the morning until it got hotter again and would still be gummy/not writing as well randomly.

They are reliable, and the refills last a super long time. I have one, and I have another pen or two (not Parkers) that use the same refills, they are my favorite pens.

Aside from the size, feel in the hand, convenience in using, the attributes I want in a pen are smoothness in the tactile sensations while writing, no smearing, appearance on the paper, permanence if I'm going to look at it several years later.

That's why I like calligraphy pens. I can't do proper calligraphy, but they slow me down, and I put more attention into technique. They also make plain writing more interesting to look at.
