Nope not missing anything.
The team making fear 2 said that the expansions were not really part of the story and that they should be just forgotten about when playing fear 2.

So far I really like Fear2. Picked it up this morning because I really liked the combat in fear 1 . The story is good and there aren't too many jumpy type scary moments. It has some of the best level designs I have seen in a long time . It also runs at a good FPS, guessing 50+ with all setting maxed at 1680x1050, with Q6600@3.0ghz, 8800GTX.

It is a bit easy on normal though. I think there are way too many health packs and armor suits laying around. The enemy AI is good. I have seen the AI a couple times crawling under stuff like pipes to get to the other side then taking a position on the other side. Overall I think it was worth the purchase.

I have not yet tried the demo or the full version one with main rig (see sig below) but I did try the demo at my 2nd rig which is a x64 window based (8800gts 512).
I couldn't not get past the first fight in the basement without persistent freezes.
Reinstalled and retried (3 times) and finally gave up.
Otherwise it looks like the game has some potential to be a good game.

Played quite a bit of it today.
I haven't had a single performance problem. Not one crash after playing about 7 hours. I even alt+tabbed , browsed a bit , etc while playing. I was worried this was going to be a console port but its really done well. The only thing I wish I could change is that film grain effect is enabled and no option to change it.

The game has some great moments in it. They have really gone crazy with the level detail. Not going to give any spoilers but later in the game there is an elementary school. In that school every single classroom is detailed. Each room has unique posters to that room, it isn't just the same things copied room after room. All the books on the shelves have different titles. There is stuff scribbled on the walls , all sorts of little things that most games just place junk around and it doesn't really add to the detail of the levels. I really have to hand it to them I am impressed with the detail.

You could just shoot your way through the game, but if you stop and look around in each area there is all sorts of things that add to the story .

If you like Left4Dead then I think you will like this, especially later on. There are some critters in the game that give the ones in L4D a run for its money.

You can download the demo from GamersHell.com without a account.

To sum it up, it is a classic console port.

-The AI has been dumbed down a great deal, and with that the various paths to a area that allow you to choose how to attack and allow the AI to flank you from the sides and rear if you do not pay attention and get complacent.
-The graphics have been covered with what I would call a layer of mud it hide how bad it is. There are more rounded edges, but it doesn't look as "real" as before. Nothing is crisp/sharp looking and patterns are used over and over again.
-Follows to tired and true "the bigger they are the dumber they are"
-BOOO scares vs a atmosphere of tension. In FEAR you went from "unstoppable killing machine" mode to entering a area that felt "wrong", made you get twitchy and drop you into a nightmare. FEAR 2 just goes "BOO".

I would not call it "bad", just average run of the mill. Nothing special.

But this is just from the demo, hopefully they just suck at making demos.

Original fear is probably my fave fps because of the smarts of the ai-at the time- I replayed that game more times than I could count even playing trough with only the shotgun and no slowmo on the hardest setting.

Man my voltmodded ti4200 made me happy back then..

It's okay. But what the heck is with the DVD installing and requiring the use of STEAM to use it? What is the point of that?

I have those stupid black bars on the screen, eating 1-2 inches of it. Why the hell all the last games have this issue? Maybe the producers think that we like not using the whole surface of the screen. But it's not like that.

if a 6800 gt struggled to play fear @ 1024x768, how the hell did a ti4200 even play the menu smooth?

I'll download the demo and see if my system can handle it first. I just read the review at Gamespot here.

Well, they totally nerfed the lighting engine . Shadows are no longer dynamic ... EpiC Fail Monolith.,,the Jupiter EX has seen better days. However it is perfect for the consoles limited graphic budget ...

The ending for this game is hilariously retarded. Look it up on youtube but it has to be the stupidest thing I've ever seen.

This makes me sad for Monolith. Used to be one of my favorite devs. Admittedly, one stinker every so often is almost a given these days, but did it have to be FEAR 2? Hopefully someone mods the hell out of it.

stinker ? Hardly. It may not be game of the year, but it is still a very good FPS.

Just picked it up today and I'm really enjoying it so far. It does feel watered down to suit the consoles in a couple of areas, the UI much like most cross platform games is rather poor, the HUD (glasses/helmet/whatever) overlay screams console and the removal of peek and lean abilities is just flat out backwards but otherwise it's been pretty good.

the original FEAR was "ok". It kept pissing me off due to the fact that you are this uber powerful soldier who can't even break the glass on a simple door to get into a side room. That completely killed the atmosphere for me.

disappointed so far, no arenas to fight the AI where he can pin me down with a couple of soldiers while the rest flank me. So far, the combat aspect is just like a generic corridor shooter and it also seems to be a bit easy on normal, you've got way too much health compared to the first fear, so far i've barely used cover. Another thing that i didn't like was the enemy soldiers voices, i much prefer those from the original fear

though i'm still only a couple of hours in so i hope it gets better

I am starting to really appreciate and accept that this is not the FEAR of 3 1/2 years ago... The production values ,sound ,cinematics and story are well above what I was expecting...

I am just taking my time and admiring all the details...The lighting engine is showing more versatility the farther I progress. This so far has been a very enjoyable ride and the most annoying complaint for me is the lack of mouse mapping. There are a lot of keys that need faster accessing ...

I think that is the thing that is hurting it most in reviews. People are comparing it to the old Fear , and I understand it is suppose to be a sequel. But if you play the game and judge it by just the current game it is a solid fps.

Mouse mapping would be nice. I also wish I could toggle the film grain.
