is anyone else thinking the way the OP shipped these things was a horrible idea to begin with?

Definitely. I'd never ship 7 laptops in the same cardboard box. There's a reason Dell (and any other company) ships their equipment in individual boxes, with molded foam spacers. Saving a few bucks on shipping by cramming TEN THOUSAND dollars worth of sensitive computer equipment into one giant cardboard box just doesn't seem logical.

That sucks OP and I hope everything's OK.

I'm sure your company stands behind you on this claim, however they are all laughing at you in the back board room because you are an idiot for shipping notebooks like that.

First thing I thought about when I saw the pic... electronics typically come boxed and protected by foam(and I don't mean peanuts), this prevents the outer box from being crushed like it is in this pic. I hope you win the dispute though.

Oh let me clarify what I mean about foam. I'm not talking about foam like Dell uses around their PCs in shipping. Oh no! What they do is surround the head with air pillows then vacuum seal it. The outside of the envelope is waxy which is important for the next step. It's placed in a box (styrene "cardboard") and then foam liquid (two parts mixed) is poured around it. This expands and completely pots the protected part (laser head) within this box. THEN this box is placed inside another larger box with the typical foam inserts. This box is then crated with wood.

They survive all shipping mishaps except a drunk forklift operator. The accelerometers were NOT tripped either. Other heads arrived intact with tripped accelerators. I don't know the specifics on what they are set at but was told they will trip if the crate falls more than about six feet to the ground!

Box was of very thin construction for that purpose, I guess the tape you put on the sides was to help give it radial support but it failed miserably. Not an excuse for it being that banged up but it's a poor packaging job there..

I've had laser heads that were packed in FOAM, sealed in a strong box then had foam around that box and finally a wooden box on the outside screwed together. One tube was broken ($30k) and they tried to fight the claim. The box was impaled with a forklift and they had to pay up.

I'm sure they had to pay. It's pretty hard to protect against a forklift!

The packaging may not have been the best, but c'mon, it was about 42#. That's hardly unreasonable, and there's no excuse for having the box look like they dragged it behind the truck, and used it for a jack stand while they changed a tire. When you ship something, you have to assume a minimal level of care. If you have to package things to survive a military air drop, somebody's doing something wrong.

how much was the total weight?
FWIW,
As a package handler nothing got on my nerves more than some 120lb box marked "fragile"
especially when the packaging is so poor that you can not get a hold of it without the box crumpling.
Second, I'm surprised that the DC did not re-box it for you if they damaged the box that much.

good laptop packaging generally has multiple boxes that fit neatly within a big box, and with foam inside the smaller boxes. you can't crush those easily at all.
