Mine's at about 55 % completion on the torrent.

Just a heads up for any prospective users, no 3d acceleration on nvidia cards due to the experimental xorg release included in F9. You can downgrade to F8's version of Xorg or follow the instructions Here to install a beta nVidia driver with basic 2d support.

I believe that the situation is similar with Radeon cards, the full press release is here.

So, Fedora 9 is 2D only for nVidia and possibly ATI users? That kind of sucks, thanks for the heads up, looks like I will be sticking with Ubuntu 8.04 then.

Yep, it's the price you pay for the bleeding edge .

I'll give it a spin today, if you'd like I can let you guys know as soon as the beta 3d drivers land.

Hmm...do you know if Diablo 2 under wine (or another emulator) would work in Fedora with a 965GM?

Thanks.

Intel graphics has the only 3d-enabled beta xorg driver IIRC, so if you install that you *should* be able to play any game you were able to play in F8.

Any idea if the new cat 8.5s work with Fedora 9 for 3D?
I don't think cat 8.5 supports Fedora 9's X server version. Some people were using F8's X server in F9 as a workaround.

Just a heads up, latest nVidia drivers with 3d acceleration enabled (no workarounds required) for Fedora 9's beta X server have been released. They're live on livna as of a few days ago.

Just want to verify this personally. I am having better luck with FC9 and Nvidia drivers for this 9600GT than I did with Ubuntu 8.04.

I refuse to run linux on a desktop until they can get dual screens to work properly. I've had better luck w/ the nvidia/ati cards but why is it such a hassle just to get my extended desktop view to work properly!
I dont want to have to hack my environment, it should be pretty simple. All this talk of how easy it is to install linux compare to winxp is BS in my opinion. Granted yes you have to track down drivers but if you;re
prepared ahead of time, it shouldn't take too long to install drivers. Once that's done, you should be ready to rock and roll.

Having said that, I did have better luck with fedora compared to ubuntu. Something about ubuntu that turns me off but I dont know why. I love *nix and I prefer it on my servers but for my desktop, I'd prefer fedora if I had to run
one on my workstation.

Works fine for me. My main system is now a Dell 1420n laptop with Intel IGP.

I use dual monitors exclusively. I plug in a monitor at work, I have a monitor at home. I used projectors in it. Everything, no sweat.

The only change I needed to make was to my /etc/X11/xorg.conf line. This was required because the Intel drivers don't support framebuffer resizing at this time.

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
SubSection "Display"
Virtual 2048 2048
EndSubSection

Monitor "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

The bolded lines are the ones I added.

I wrote a simple script to add monitors and such..
case ${1} in
both)
xrandr --output LVDS --auto;
xrandr --output VGA --auto --above LVDS ;
;;
laptop)
xrandr --output LVDS --auto;
xrandr --output VGA --off ;
;;
vga)
xrandr --output LVDS --off ;
xrandr --output VGA --auto;
;;
*)
echo
workmon vga --> external display only
workmon both --> dual monitors
workmon laptop --> laptop display only

Plug a monitor in, type that command, and the desktop will automatically stretch across both displays. Switching back and forth is easy and stable. Can do it all day long without logging out or anything like that.

Changing resolutions works fine also. Refresh rates are controllable. Also rotating the displays works just fine. No sweat.

this is due to the randr extension for X. Open source Intel drivers support it well. Most open source ATI and the Nouveau have some basic support, although the Intel support is by far the most mature.

Ubuntu has some sort of GUI for randr rather then using the xrandr command line tool. Never used it though.

There is 3d support now: http://www.nvidia.com/object/l...ay_ia32_173.14.05.html
"Added preliminary support for X.Org server 1.5. "

The Livna.org repository trusted not to contain malicious software? I am not familiar with Fedora and I am always a bit reluctant to use 3rd party repositories.

I believe Livna follows the same guidelines as Fedora for submitting, reviewing, approving packages, etc. I consider it to be safe, but that's just me. I've never run into any packaging conflicts either.

Maybe I'm too trusting.

Livina is equivalent to Medibuntu or debian-multimedia. They all follow their respective distro guidelines for packaging and are generally safe to use.

I've been tinkering a bit with Ubuntu the past few months, first 7.10 and then 8.04, what do you guys feel Fedora 9's strengths and weaknesses are compared to Ubuntu?
