Feeling extremely anxious

Hey all, I think I may have an anxiety disorder. I constantly worry about my health even though there is probably nothing wrong. I had an MRI and some blood work done recently just to rule some things out and I'm pretty sure(so is my doctor)that nothing will come up.

I have been worrying about my health for quite some time after noticing 2 small numb spots on my knee and chest. The spots have not spread and don't bother me. Fear of serious diseases though has put me over the edge I think. I wake up at around 4 in the morning totally stressed out. I am so keyed up and anxious I cannot get back to bed or think of little else but my health. As the day progresses I get better so by early afternoon I am almost back to my old self but not quite. I am usually okay for the rest of the day except that I am tired from being so stressed and missing some sleep. Any ideas?

You need to stop embracing the obsessive and negative thought patterns. Consciously choose to ignore those thoughts that you recognize as irrational fears. Do some reading on cognitive behavior therapy. If your hypochondria is so bad that it's affecting your sleep, it might be a good idea to see a psychiatrist.

There are hypochondriac suport groups out there. If you can't train your mind to release the negative idea that *something* is wrong all the time, they might be a good idea. I never even knew they had groups like that (there is a group for everything though I reckon) until my father started dating this woman who was closer to my age than his. Turns out she had.. umm.. let's say... issues.

She was a retired nurse who got a weird notion that she was always sick or dying or abut to be sick and dying. She eventually went to a few meetings suggested by a nurse friend of hers and she seemed a lot better over the course of time (few months).

Also, just working out in general, even basic weight training and light cardio can make a mental difference in addition to the obvious physical benefits.

some regular daily or near daily exercise routine
that you could conceivably find enjoyable. (probably
something you already are familiar with.)

combined with a form of yoga as strenuous as you
can tolerate. ashtanga yoga is the most strenuous
i'm aware of. one of my former co-workers used
to refer to it as "yoga as practiced by the US marines."

the problem there is, it's hard to find a cheap yoga
class.

if you do it right, with the right group of people, it's
VERY effective at melting away anxiety, or helping
a person think through a difficult situation, or to deal
with the stress of a tech start-up.

P.S. not Bikram style "hot room" yoga, unless you
are one of those people that enjoys working out in
105 degrees F.

I have been suffering from anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for many years. In my experience, and I repeat, in MY experience medication and doctors have been VERY ineffective and in fact, HARMFUL to my health. And believe me when I say that I seen many, many doctors, and took countless meds. The best person that can help you is yourself. Now, when I say this I dont mean that you shouldn't seek help from others. What I mean is, once you find out what needs to be done, YOU must do it, and not rely on someone to literally save you from your problems and cure you.

Here are my suggestions:

1)The mental conditioning is VERY important. You must constantly do mental work every single day, like a religious man. By mental work I mean that you have to spend 10-20 minutes every day to quietly sit down and imagine that you are a healthy, confident person. Feel the strength and health inside you. Keep telling yourself that you are fine. When starting out, a suggestion like this seems silly/stupid to many people. It is also very hard to sit quietly and imagine/think about these things. However if you want to succeed, you must do this and believe in it. all you have to know if that it works, and it worked for many people. This is a form of meditation.
Another basic thing you should do is breathing meditation. Sit down, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. think about only your breath, and block out everything else that is coming up in your mind. Do this for as long as you can but no need to do it more than 20-30 min or so. Even if you do it for only 5 minutes, it is still beneficial.

2)Exercise/workouts are very important. It has been scientifically proven that they help reduce stress.

3)Deprive yourself of "free" time. Find something to do all the time. And by something to do I dont mean go watch TV or play a video game. What I mean is go do some house chores - vacuum the floor, wash the dishes... Learn something new like playing a musical instrument, or read a book about something interesting. Take a tai-chi/yoga class. Maybe a martial art class like aikido or kung fu.

4)Most importantly you need to WANT to help yourself. You need to act upon wanting to help yourself and not just talk about it.

Going to a doctor and swallowing pills is easy. By doing this you are admitting that you are powerless to change anything about yourself and putting all hope into this doctor or this pill.

You did the right thing my getting an MRI, taking some tests... But going to a psychiatrist is another matter altogether. People have told me countless times that seeing a shrink is nothing to be ashamed of, he will no turn you into a vegetable with his pills, he will help you etc. I listened and went along with it. Boy was I wrong... Just take my word for it.

If you feel you must, go ahead and see a shrink, take his pills, etc. But have the courage to say ENOUGH! if you feel that the treatment is not helping or harming you.

Hope this helps, and remember that I am not a qualified medical professional. I'm only trying to help. You have your own head, and you should always make your decisions by yourself.

Go running, go biking, working out. Put your body under physical stress so that it is too exhausted for emotional stress.
Also, taking yourself to your physical limits will expose any physical issues you have or give you confidence that you don't have any, because is there is something wrong with you, it will more likely surface when you put yourself under physical stress. And you'll be in better shape anyways.
Also, I would be careful of telling your doctor about this, because later if there is something actually wrong with you, he may think you are just having anxiety attack and give you medicine for that instead of taking the time to diagnose you. I also tell my doctor upfront I don't want any pain killers so he doesn't get an idea that I am just a junkie looking for a fix.
