Any video card that does not take up two slots will fit.

7950 GT, 8600 GTS, some X1950 Pro's, will work.

But all 8800 series of cards, and the X1950 XT and X2900 series are all dual slot cards. They won't fit.

Is there a away I can upgrade my computer to dual slot capable?

edit: I'm searching on newegg I can't seem to find a "dual slot" search option.

Help?

Sorry no. It is the case and motherboard design that limit you to single slot cards. So, you'd need a new case and motherboard.

The Inspiron desktops are low and mid-range systems, they just were never designed for high-end video cards.

I'm not a fortune teller, but I imagine all high-end video cards will continue being dual slot cards. The move to .65nm GPU's may help that though. It is possible there will be a GeForce 9800 GT or 9800 GS or something of the sort that will be a single slot card.

Are you absolutely sure the Inspiron is only single slot compatible?

I was told in this very thread and via pm that I could upgrade to an 8800GTS with the Inspiron 510.

The credit already came through so there is no turning back.

I want to no my options in for the future, since I'll be using this computer until I graduate probably.

I'll have $400 to upgrade the videocard and anything else later.

Help?

this link only says 1 PCIx16, not two.

Dell has a no-questions asked return policy, 30 days I think. If it hasn't shipped, you can certainly cancel your order.

I have not seen an Inspiron 530 yet, but it is a replacement for the E520, and is certainly their mid-range system. I cannot remember a midrange Dell system that could fit a dual slot video card, especially since they started using their modified version of BTX.

This is an internal view of the E520 with a single slot card installed...

See the difference?

I'm just so sick of searching for computers.

This is the best system Dell offers that meet my needs.

The XPS 410 is bloatedly priced and I could never upgrade (I only have $1,600, and I only wanted to spend $1,200 on a computer.)

Unless I see some extremely compelling reason why I shouldn't order the Inspiron 510...

Will this single slot thing really hold me down?

I only play the battlefield games and I don't do animation.

A response to my other questions will be appreciated!

Go here...
http://www.dell.com/content/pr...?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh

Click on view inventory under XPS 410. See if you can find a good deal. You were willing to pay someone to add a video card and PSU, so why not do the same with other components. You can add/replace a hard drive or optical drive, or even a video card, easily, I mean even my dad could do it.

These have the exact same warranty as retail.

Pick up a monitor here...

EDIT:

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/mjr_toker/insp530.jpg

Yes, the Insp 530 will NOT fit dual slot cards.

The inspiron is not the E520.

The pics you linked me don't work.

I tallied the cheapest XPS 410 system with the specs I need (320 gig hd, 2 gigs, 8600gts, etc..) and it came to $1100. Add $200 for monitor and you get $1,300.

I still don't think it's worth the hassle.

I'm having trouble searching for single slot cards on newegg.

Anyways, I'm still researching the Inspiron 530 to see if it's dual slot compatible. It's a fairly new system (released about 3 months ago) and single slot is a pretty dated...soo.

Let's hope for the best I guess.

edit: I don't have time to upgrade immediately. Honestly, the inspiron 530 won't be here till August 15 (when school starts.) If I cancel the order today, and manage to find something better today, it still wouldn't be here until after scool begins.

I need a working gaming capable computer before the school year starts.

responses 2 my other questions will be appreciated.

i'm still confused over this dual slot issue.

HAHAHAHA!!

GUESS WHAT?

THE INSPIRON 530 IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE 8800 CARDS!!!!

However, I would have to replace the PSU (not that big of a deal) because the card requires a 6-pin molex power connector.

I AM VICTORIOUS!

http://www.dellcommunity.com/s..._date_ascending&page=6

the answer to whether the 8800 series cards will fit into the inspiron 530/531 is here, and the answer is YES IT FITS!!! i almost cried tears of joy when it snapped into place . it has more than enough room really. i actually took some pics, but i'm on the new pc right now and am in the process of changing the settings and installing my drivers and stuff. i'm also very happy with the e530 btw.

I AM THE CHAMPION!

Yeah I wasn't sure about the dual slot pci-express cards fitting, since it wouldn't fit on the old ones but it looks like you can fit it in yours. I don't think you need a new power supply, just a molex to 6pin pci express adapter... maybe only need a new one because of the low wattage but try it out before you order a new power supply.

You shouldn't even need to replace the PSU... most manufacturers ship their cards with the adapter you'd need. Here is a pic of the adapter (it's the thing on the right), along with the other hardware accessories that EVGA ships with their 8800GTSes.

Because I discovered that the 510 can handle dual slot video cards.

That's why I'm so awesome.

Luck does not make a fool a genius.

The truth is you learned that the Insp 530 could in fact fit a dual slot video card after you made the purchase. A smarter man would do his research beforehand.

And before you look down over the crowd, from atop your pedestal, remember that you still took the easy way out, and paid for it, rather heavily I might add. Congrats, you have a mid-range computer with a low-end C2D processor, and an average video card.

The people here at Anandtech that are "awesome," or "amazing," are the ones who take the time to build their PC, the people who rumage through Hot Deals, basically the people who actually care enough to simply get the best possible PC for their hard-earned money.

Those people will always be happier with their PC than you ever will be with your's.

Why's that? I'm far happier with my Acer Quad6600 than I am with a Gigabyte 965-C2D 2.13@3.2 that I put together, so perhaps you can share with the crowd why anyone should be happier one way or another?

PS: Still waiting for details on how you'd put together a machine, cheaper than the Dell @ $649, with legal Vista Home Premium & 22" Dell monitor, with all the stuff I listed previously.... since you lost that one you seemed to have jumped to this 'happiness' argument, which I suppose is far easier to argue since it's entirely subjective.

The system config'd at 649 is a decent deal, you can have that. But where they hit you is the upgrades, and that is exactly where the OP got hit, and pretty hard too.

I have probably ordered roughly 650 Dell systems in the past 3 years. And what I can tell you with certainty is that buying from them retail, even with coupon codes, is almost never the best deal you can get.

What you don't know is that the OP and I had a little conversation via PM's before he posted this thread. I won't go into the details however.

Just as an example of what one could do with a Dell, this is what I could plan on doing. This is a system I picked up from Dell Outlet....

XPS 410 Mini-Tower
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6320 (1.86GHz, 1066 FSB)
256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache
2GB DDR2 Non-ECC SDRAM 677MHz (2 DIMMs)
80GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
48X CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
USB 2 Button Mouse
USB Keyboard

After shipping and tax, that came to 468.65.

I will sell off the following...
E6320 (-$120)
Geforce 7300LE (-$25)
80GB SATA (-$20)

That brings my cost down to $303.65.

I'll be adding...
Q6600 ($280)
8800 GTX ($500)
500GB Seagate ($105)
DVDRW ($35)

Total cost: $1223.65.

Of course, I haven't actually decided on exactly what I will be doing. I'm going to wait for another video card refresh, and actual Crysis benchmarks before I make any moves.

Now, let's take the same system and add the OP's config...

XPS 410 Mini-Tower
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6320 (1.86GHz, 1066 FSB)
256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache
2GB DDR2 Non-ECC SDRAM 677MHz (2 DIMMs)
80GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
48X CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
USB 2 Button Mouse
USB Keyboard

Still at 468.65.

He could sell off the following...
Geforce 7300LE (-$25)
80GB SATA (-$20)

That brings his cost down to $423.65

He could add the following...
8600 GTS ($158)
320GB Seagate ($80)
DVDRW ($35)
Acer 19in Digital LCD ($173)

Total cost: $869.65

He could have saved about $300. Or just got an 8800 GTS instead of the 8600 GTS, and still had some money left over for his Media Card Reader.

You're not factoring in software.

As I said previously, I won't be opening my computer.

You're also banking on the fact that I would sell the parts I don't use, in addition to prowling the web for the cheapest parts on the planet that meet my requirements.

I don't have the time, energy or want to do that.

And before you look down over the crowd, from atop your pedestal, remember that you still took the easy way out, and paid for it, rather heavily I might add. Congrats, you have a mid-range computer with a low-end C2D processor, and an average video card.

My C2D is better than the one you recommened, @sshole.

You're the d**k that was attempting to sell me your s**t @ss ebay computers. Just because I didn't buy into your bulls**t does not mean you have to be a jerk.

What do you mean the easy way out? I spent months obsessing over this computer situation. I'm finally glad it's done, at a reasonable price too.

The people here at Anandtech that are "awesome," or "amazing," are the ones who take the time to build their PC, the people who rumage through Hot Deals, basically the people who actually care enough to simply get the best possible PC for their hard-earned money.

Not everyone has unlimited time and energy to do that. ASSF**K!
Those people will always be happier with their PC than you ever will be with your's.

I seriously hope you go to hell.

This is my first computer in a long time and you have to go and ruin it.

What an @sshole.

For one, I don't sell using the Anandtech FS/T forums, at least not at the moment.

Two, you have never bought anything from me, ever.

Three, the only place I regularly sell online is Ebay, and my feedback there is at 100% positive, and I am a Gold Level Power Seller.

And four, my HEAT account is also at 100% positive.

I would appreciate it if you would remove that from your sig in case I ever do need to sell something on Anandtech FS/T forums.

I also don't want to bother a Moderator in doing it for you.
