Aren?t the 775 chips, a lot harder to remove the IHS on compared to the s939 chips. I'm sure that?s what i read a little while back.

They're epoxy'ed to the IHS. I'd say there is a 99% chance of cracking the core if you attempt to remove the IHS for the first time.

Decided to edit the original post to show improvement in OC'ing. Currently @2.4GHz with stock VCore.

BTW I'm running this E6300 on my test system - which means outside a case. It's an open-air testbed.

Yeah, but how do you hit 500 mhz FSB? Do some of the 975x boards support FSB speeds that high without mods?

E6300 is the highest end Allendale. The E4xxx wont be released cause OEM's and retailers need to dump their Pentium-D stock.
Agreed, install Windows first before you start overclocking.

Just a quick note (will do a full write on my impression tomorrow): E6300 Overclocking will be ALL ABOUT MOTHERBOARDS I'm about to go to bed now with dual-Prime95 running @2.94GHz (which is stock X6800 speed) I added 0.0125V so now the Vcore is set @1.3375. This chip will definitely go higher as long as the mobo can handle FSB. (Remember, the motherboard also has to deal with memory) Everyone will try to hunt the mobos with best FSB results. CPU's potential is seconday.

Edit: Oh I got the board a *bit* cheaper. ($238) But now seeing these reulsts, I'm dying for FSB500 which can handle CPU and high memory clock at the same time.

Allendale has half the l2 cache (2 megs vs 4 megs on Conroe) and no VT. It may be missing some power management features too, but I'm not sure.

Those Allendale whichi will com next year also supposed to have 2MB shared L2 Cache. The difference with current Allendale will be the later ones will have 800FSB (contrast to current 1066FSB ones) I believe Intel's not releasing these lower-end chips till next year so that they can get rid of more P-D serious.

So it's like this:

Conroe: Conroe chip (lol) / 4MB L2 / 1066FSB
Current Allendale: Conroe Chip / 2MB L2 / 1066FSB
Allendale '07: Conroe Chip / 2MB L2 / 800FSB

lopri, thanks for posting blow by blow of your experiences. The MB and memory will be the primary obstacles to OC this E6300 based on your results and other's experiences, X-bit has something to that same effect.

There is some brouhaha about the C1 vs C2 stepping of the P965 MBs as being compatible with Conroes (Cointreau). I guess that will impact FSB capability.

Dual-Prime95 (Large FFT)@2.94 (7x420) has failed after 3 hours. Bumped the VCore to 1.35V and re-started but I have a feeling that the northbridge is responsible.

Yes, Large FFT. Config: 7 x 420, FSB:Memory=1:1, so memory is DDR2-820 / 3-4-3-7. The MCH is heavily stressed by memory, it seems. Under 300FBS, it handled up to DDR2-1080 / 4-4-3, but at 420FSB, it craps out anything over DDR2-900. I need a Vmch mod. Anyone got a link?

At this point, it's more like northbridge OC'ing. I can see the CPU has more headroom (a lot), so Small FFT would be quite easy. (Especially memory being out of the equation)

Definitely FSB limited. To make things worse, the MCH is also stressed by memory. So when FSB is low, your memory shows its full potential. But as you raise the FSB, you will have to lower the memory speed. I wouldn't doubt this chip would do 7 x 500 on a capable motherboard.

Accordind to Intel's site, all of the Core 2 Duo's have VT.
