Weapons are very important and have a heavy influence on your character and how they succeed in the game world. Square Enix says to look closely at the official Final Fantasy 14 logo for hints and hidden meanings about how the game will work.

What hidden meanings?
Square Enix told us that when it approached Amano to do the logo art for Final Fantasy 14, that weapons were very important and to think of the concept of a "wheel." Specifically, a wheel of adventurers that has their weapon in front of them and an exposed backside -- which leaves each adventurer to rely heavily on their comrades and their friends. Let the speculation begin.

AWESOME

Jobs will return in Final Fantasy 14, but they will be much different than the job system present in Final Fantasy XI.

The leveling system answer is worrisome...it probably means another goofy alternate system like Final Fantasy X.

The job answer is very worrisome...since the way jobs were setup in Final Fantasy XI was one of the best things about that game.

The weapons answer is extremely worrisome...it seems like they are moving more towards a gear based character progression system, much like WOW. IMHO, that is a bad idea, since I prefer straight up character progression as opposed to gear-based progression.

It's still too early to tell, but this Q&A session does reveal some cause for concern...at least from my prespective.

But hey, at least they ditched PlayOnline!

Great story, but God awful and confusing junctioning system instead of normal leveling. I still say the Sphere Grid from 10 or the Materia system from 7 were the best systems. If you spent the time, you could have ridiculous stats for your entire party using either system.

I agree with you that hte job system setup in FFXI was really great. I can't possibly understand what can make it better.

I'm always amazed by FF's on how each one must be a different system, process, etc. Its unique and great, sometimes can fail, but many times makes for a great game. I really really really hope they learned a lot from the 7+ years from FFXI on what works, and what doesn't. Exciting stuff Especially as I'll be able to play it on my PS3!!

The last thing we need is a bunch of characters doing the Tigger bounce everywhere like in WOW...

FFXI was the first MMO that I ever played so I'm definately excited for FFIX and will definately at least give it a whirl. I agree the jobs system was awesome, so hope they don't stray away too far from that. I wonder if players from multiple countries will still play on the same server like FFXI or will it be more like WoW with US/EU servers etc. I kinda liked playing with JPN players in FFXI and trying to communicate with emoticon etc., was definitely a different experience.

I have 500+ days before I quit for good on the I forget'th time, docked into FFXI.

My impression of what I hear from 14 so far is a complete ripoff from 11, and unnecessary grinding and item hunting will be back.

It's bad enough for those with an RPG obsessive personality (read as, want to obtain the best items or skills etc) because you end up putting a lot of time into it.

But if you play with moderation and don't care for all that, you will probably do fine.

I don't look forward to camping for something days in a row with a 1/100 chance to drop once again.. Or even leveling extra jobs just to get that "uber" status (and item).

I LOVE grinding, as long as they don't "nerf" it down the road...so that the grind you did previously because pointless, and easier for others...which FF11 has not done, if I recall.

FF8 was good too, FF7, FF9, FF8 are my 3 favorites...the originals were OK, but these 3 really opened the game up.

I'll update the OP...and dub this the official ff14 thread.

That's interesting; the more I hear about 14, the more I get the completely opposite impression. I'm sure there will still be grind, but the game mechanics sound quite different from 11.

They've made it a lot easier to level solo or in small groups over the past year or two, but certainly nothing like lowering the amount of experience required or anything like that. So there have been some "nerfs" I guess, but nothing that's really pissed off anyone who put in serious time. (With regards to leveling anyway.)

Signed up tonight for beta. I played ffxi for about 10 months straight then on and off again for a while. I loved the game. The ff world was unique. The game had a lot of things that could of used fine tuning or improving but the biggest thing was the fact that it took so long to get parties going. While at the same time the game was fun if u could get in a good party and gather some xp for a few hours. Ive had some ideas how they could keep the game active with emphasis still on partying. With that said I hope i get into the beta. I bought ffxiii and used the code to sign up so hopefully that increases my chances.

Did you ever play FFXI?

It's grinding was comparable to Korean MMO's like the grindy Silkroad Online or Priston Tale.

Did I ever play FFXI? Yes, for about 7 years or so and still going. I have 10 jobs to 75 with merits. While doing endgame. I also played Aion, a Korean MMO. In my opinion, FFXI is a walk in the park compared to Aions grinding. When I came back to leveling in FFXI, after leveling in Aion, the difference in exp/level was nothing. Eron party at 37 makes 15k/hour level synced. Level 55+ party on colibri makes the same exp. Parties after this level make an average of 10-15k/level reguardless of the area. Rings add to the exp.

Now, my question for you: Have you played FFXI in the past 4 years or are you basing 'The Grind' on when the game was released? I assure you that the FFXI that I play is not more of a grind than any Korean MMO. Especially when the exp needed to ding 75 is 44,0000. 4 hour grind to reach the level cap in FFXI vs 70+ million exp for 43+ in Aion.

FFXI is still alive and kicking! Yesterday's and future updates will continue to house players, so I'm curious how many players will reside in FFXI and how many will port over to FFXIV. I still truly enjoy FFXI to be honest and the grind isn't as bad as other grinds that I've played before. The person who you are quoting doesn't know what he's talking about.

I played FF11 since NA launch and played hardcore for 5 years. The last few have been maybe 2-5 hours a month. Realistically FF11 was the best combo of crafting and player development ever implimented in a hardcore game. It took me 2 years of hardcore crafting to get two 100 level crafts that made me stinking rich in the game. To the point where I had a Kraken Club at level 35 to level dark knight ^^.- a uber rare and super expensive club...

There were many faults to FF11 in its early days but compared to the unpolished messes that have been released the last few years-vanguard im talking to you-FF11 was a gem.
What made FF11 great was the helping nature of the game. People needed each other at level 10 let alone the limit breaks. Inevitably someone helped you with many many things over the years, complete strangers would help you for hours, who became great friends...

Now that I am a father the time probably needed to play FF14 right will keep me away but I can remember the good times in ff11 fondly......the bad times on the other hand.....24 hour spawns.....shudder...shudder.

What is the last single player Final Fantasy? I seem to like every other one they put out. (Liked 7 and 9, didn't like 8 or 10 that much.) FF3 for the SNES is still my favorite, but I wouldn't mind getting another one if they still make them as story driven single player RPGs.

The need to find a good group to get EXP to level past lvl10 was love/hate for me and my friends. I love playing with other people and being a RDM I got into parties pretty easily. My friend who was a DRG.....he'd be waiting in Jeuno for like 4hrs with no party invites . (this was like 2-3yrs after NA release so maybe in recent years they made leveling easier solo and/or in small groups).

Red Mage is still my favorite class of all the MMO's I've played. I loved being in the "hot seat" and constantly engaged in the battles since we had no time to rest (enfeebling, buffing self+party, spot healing, nuking, Magic Burst). I had like a full set of +1 elemental staffs and made some crazy macros to switch them up before each cast of a spell. When $h!t hit the fan we could do some crazy stuff with Convert + Chainspell. God I have such fond memories of FFXI. Loved it. Here's to hoping FFIV can create similar memories in the future!
