Finally installed Far Cry

So I got Far Cry for free with my CPU/mobo from monarch. BF2 has been my gaming fix since I built this rig, but I finally dug up the Far Cry CD and installed.

Awesome.

This is the single player experience that I missed with Doom 3 and HL2.

Furthermore, the Crytek engine is superior to any other engine out there IMO. I think this is the best looking game I have seen.

Far Cry was my favorite game of last year. I've been playing FEAR, and so far I'm as bored of it as I got with Doom 3.

I've been hesitant to get FEAR. The demo wasnt all that fun and it ran like crap on my system. Quake 4 intrigued me for about a couple of minutes before I decided to hold off buying it. COD2 will probably be my next single player game. As you can tell I am very picky about my SP games. I think what makes FC so fun to me is the atmosphere. The wide open landscape, beautiful graphics (except for that damn texture shimmering), I just find myself immersed even though the storyline sucks so far.. does the story get any better?

Farcry has been as of now, the most fun game i've ever played. I still play the single player regularly

The engine is amazing, those outdoor environments have no equal as far as i'm aware, atmosphere is spot on. Pity the cut scenes are a bit silly sometimes,, but then just take it for the fun it's supposed to be. and enjoy the brilliance of everything else

Far Cry had very good gameplay despite the lack of a real story and the outdoor maps were really well designed. I liked it a lot and thought it was better than D3 and far better than HL2, although IMO the best modern single player game was Splinter Cell Chaos Theory by some distance. I've started playing FEAR and it doesn't look like anything special so far, similar to Doom 3 in many ways.

FC was great fun but the stroke of genius was in choosing a tropical island environment in which to showcase the engine.

Too bad I finished it with a 9800pro chugging along on my AGP rig. I wish I was in your place right now, playing FC for the first time with a mid-high end system.

Perhaps if/when I upgrade to something that can comfortably deal with the likes of FEAR and Quake 4 I'll bring FC out again for a nostalgic replay.

Do any of you guys play online multiplayers? Ever since I started playing Unreal Tournament (the original, released in 1999, not the mucked up 2003/2004 versions) I've been sold on the idea of online multiplayer. It has to be much more fun and challening competing against live human opponents and trying to outsmart them. I've had the most fun playing as a member of a real team using voice communication where people have position assignments and where real teamwork and communication is needed--it's intense and totally awesome. It beats the beejeezus out of fragging bots. (I'm in with a group of people who play pick-up games (pugs), where 5-on-5 capture-the-flag matches are set up and organized somewhat spontaneously on IRC through the use of a pugbot program.)

So, I don't get real excited about single player campaigns like Doom3, Halflife2, and Fear. Far Cry does sound like it's very good and I hope to play it if I ever build a new rig. I'd be more interested in BF2 or CoD2 multiplayer. I'm looking forward to Unreal Tournament 2007 if Epic doesn't drop the ball and learns from its huge mistakes with UT 2003/2004.

MP is great, but SP can still be lots of fun. It's more relaxing and you can play how you like, no need for intense firefights all the time.

After you're done with Farcry, you really need to try Matto's mod. Download link

Now back to the real news - finally Matto is back with his brand new mod "Matto3"! It was definitely worth to wait so long because this map is a genius manifestation what you can do in FarCry even with a small team. First of all I want to mention that the map is pleasing long, like Matto2 was. In addition the mod contains now two new weapons. The Glock with its 3 round burst and a modified P99 with a silencer and scope definitely make a lot of fun. Like you are used to it the level contains mass of allusions regarding other games. All these little, refreshing, funny elements make the difference towards the retail singleplayer maps. Of course that?s not all. New sounds, objects, music and script gimmicks make Matto3 a complete new FarCry experience.
The loading time might be quite long due to the big level size except you have a lot of RAM. Otherwise the map has no real appreciable technical problems. It is definitely the new FarCry fan singleplayer map reference and absolutely worth the 60MB download! Also make sure that you play the map till the end and look in every corner. You won?t regret it

Its a really good level, probably a little over an hour of gameplay. And Matto4 is soon to be out, with some really good shots; http://forums.ubi.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/273109392/m/8531032163

Fear does not even come close to the quality game that is Far Cry IMO.. FC is one of my favorite games of all time, FEAR is not on the list. P.S. I am so sick of hearing about FEAR, I really see absolutely nothing special about that game in any way, except for one thing, the intelligent AI. Other than that, Just another FPS.

I'd have to agree with you there, I played through FEAR in two days and while the ending was pretty good, the bland environments really left me rather disappointed. The AI is good but certainly not the greatest thing ever, for some reason the original HL AI still has a special place in my heart.

Far Cry is IMHO the best looking FPS and has great gameplay, but the "story" really pissed me off and the last 1/3 of the game is pretty much garbage. If they had stuck with the original premise throughout it would probably eclipse HL as the best title to date.

What was wrong with UT2k4?

The last 1/3 of FarCry, and the abysmal voice acting, ruined it for me. FEAR is superior IMO but I have a system capable of running it well.

I play both, but the game that got me was the UT original that I got with my soundblaster Live! I hated the more recent UTs, the maps weren't the same, too large, vehicles...

Something is to be said for vehicles...I thought they worked well with Halo for PC, but games like BF2, I find that you cannot do muc without vehicles, and esp when people get into an APC that is meant to hold 7, they drive off alone....and if they do take you, they get blown up by a single rocket.

FEAR is fun but it's definitely not great, and pales in comparison to FC. Worst of all, FEAR requires a beefy system and still looks pretty crappy. I've got a 7800GT as well and honestly, the graphics blow. The character models are good but the environments suck beyond belief (rooftops, parking garage, cubicles, cubicles, cubicles...). Even with everything set to maximum, a cubicle and office will look ...well, like a cubicle and an office. Nothing exciting like a lush jungle. Definitely won't be playing FEAR again, but FC is still on my harddrive and has been for the past year (HDR was nice, but much rather have AA instead). Everytime I rebuild my box, the first games I install are Steam (TFC and CS) and FC.

You didnt happen to notice the parralax mapping on every wall in the game? The volumetric lights everywhere and the ultra high shadow detail for everything?

I really dont get why people say the graphics suck... they dont.

most of Fear looks good. but look at the truck trailers cause they look like they are from 1995 not 2005. the wheels are not even round. i thought i was in HL1 when i saw those. the graphics in Fear are not very consistent.

Once you finally get bored with it, play it in god mode (can't remember the command, but easy to find on Google).

No no. Just the Big3 in general. Those were E3 2004's heavy hitters. Or was it E3 2003? Maybe both.

I think what they really messed up on was the weapon and vehicle balancing. That was a real pity, as I really liked pretty much everything else about the game, but with the underpowered/unbalanced weapons (and in onslaught, vehicles that were too powerful) the gameplay didn't feel the same anymore. I was a hardcore UT player for years and am hoping that in UT2007 they will just change the weapon stats back to what they used to be in UT, but I'm not holding my breath.
