It's decent, but the Mazda three has already come in with a competitively priced "high horsepower" econobox, so it's kind of like the tC is a bit late. Nothing really special now. The dealer upgrade thing is a total gimmick and not even worth praise in the least.
The scion name is, IMO, total sh1te, the reason being you can't tell somebody you "drive a scion" you have to say "I drive a scion xB" or xA or tC and they're like "WTF are you talking about?". What I'm getting at is in most other cars you have a model, and then variants to that model, but all variants are pretty much the same. A scion tC is totally unlike an xB - they should have given them distinct names.
They MAKE you say Scion tC or Scion xB b/c it FORCES you to say the brand name to give it some recognition. If you say you drive a Camry or an Altima, people know that they are Toyotas and Nissan's respectively. If you say you drive a TL or a 3, you almost HAVE to say that you drive an Acura TL or Mazda 3 which MAKES you emphasize the brand name. It's rather clever if you ask me
As for "competively" priced, price a Mazda 3s like a Scion tC comes STANDARD and you're looking at rounghly $19,000-$19,500
Yes but if I say Mazda 3 or Acura TL or Nissan Maxima people know a) the brand and b) the car. Go ask people on the street who makes a Scion tC and you'll get blank stares, so now you're forced to say "Toyota Scion tC". People don't know who makes a scion! Heck, that's one of the reasons I didn't buy a sentra se-r spec v, because then I just tell people I drive a sentra
It's just like most luxury makes are doing.
BMW gives you the 3 series, the 5 series, the 6 series, the 7 series, etc.
Mercedes has G-class, C-class, M-class, etc.
No, it's not what they're doing. I mean granted a 330i is different from a 325i, but they're basically just different versions of the same car with different engine specs and/or accessories, but you can still say you drive a BMW 3-series, and though that could fall within a range, the range is fairly tight. A scion xB and tC are very different vehicles in both appearance and power. It's like Honda having the accord and the civic, but naming them the Honda Something A and the Honda Something B. You've got, to give any inclination or ball park of what you drive, give THREE defining characteristics...unless of course you say you drive a Toyota tC or an xB, which then makes the scion part a waste of time
