No "open new tab" button in the customize pool, font rendering is screwy, no closing multiple tabs warning despite the option being ticked, and tab rearranging is broken. I like the speed improvements, but this is sort of sloppy.

The open new tab button screwed with me for awhile. What you need to do is select customize by right click, now glance at the tab bar at the extreme right hand side. There is the open new tab button, hover over it and grab it and you can place it on the toolbar above.

I have to actually install an add-on if I want my status bar at the bottom back? That sucks. I also dislike that because I have no status bar, the noscript icon moved up to the address bar. The main reason I dislike that is I have converted family to using Firefox because I got tired of cleaning spyware/malware from their computers and showed them how to use NoScript. Once FF updates on their computers, they will have absolutely no clue where the icon is for noscript and call me in a panic. ugh.

Anyone know if there is a way to restore the status bar though, by editing about:config?

Right click the address bar(or somewhere else in the browser), and check off Addon bar. You can then move your addon buttons to that. To replace statusbar functionality, install Status-4-Evar. That works pretty well at putting everything back where it belongs.

Edit:
Here's a screenshot of my setup. Pretty close to classic, no?

Yeah, it's going to take me less time to explain to them where the new icons are than to tell them to view a new status bar and how to get the icons down on that bar. I wish companies wouldn't change things like that, for no reason other than to look like another browser.

I'm not going to install another add-on to get the status bar back when it shouldn't have been taken away in the first place. That's why I asked if anyone knew of a way to get it back using config. Guess I'll just be forced to get used to it. Thanks for the reply.

I'm not a fan of the gui changes either. Browsers, and more troubling, Linux desktop devs are attacking the non-existent problem of screen real estate with their new products. They're changing the tried and true method of interacting with computers, for dubious gains in screen real estate.

I don't know about you, but the scroll wheel in my mouse works pretty well, and as you can see by my screenie above, I have plenty of usable screen, and that's even zoomed in since I use this computer at a distance. Change for it's own sake is stupid, and playing me too with Chrome makes you look like a folower, and not a leader.

The add-on bar should have at least put the hyperlink location when you hover over a link back within the add-on bar itself. At least it would have been like the old status bar. Now the hyperlink hovers over the add-on bar itself. Looks weird.

I noticed that too and thought it was pretty stupid.

and lxskllr, I agree with you about the screen real estate thing. Monitors are pretty inexpensive nowdays and removing a few pixels from the bottom of my browser isn't going to make a big difference. If people don't like the status bar, they can turn it off...but at least give us that like it the option of keeping it.

Just installed it. A few things I'll have to get used to, like where Tabs and Buttons are located, but so far the Speed improvement is very noticeable.

Right click the addon bar, and pick Customize. Drag the icon down to the addon bar.

Just installed it .. so-so .. has some issues for me

IE Tab Plus

Remove It Permanently

Both of these do not work in Firefox 4

Navigation Icons are way too big. Want
the classic ones from Firefox 3 back.

I hate it so far.

Everytime I try to configure the bars and menus how I like them, the next time I open Firefox the bars and menus have reverted to their default state.

As a long shot before burning it to the ground, try turning off hardware acceleration; Preferences-Advanced-Use hardware acceleration when available.

How did you get Firefox 3 style buttons in Firefox 4 ? ? ?
I do not see that anywhere and I despise the new icons.

I had IE Tab Plus 1.9520100933 .. Firefox did not bother to check for an update to it when it was installed. I just did autoupdate on add-ons, but it only went 1.98 .. had to do a manual search and download to get to 1.99

Fixed toolbar buttons using FX Chrome 1.68
Not perfect, but much, much better.

Two problems solved
One left (which is Remove It Permanently)

Font rendering is messed up if you use Cleartype (default on on Vista and Windows 7) and if you enable hardware acceleration. It looks different than any other browser.
I see no setting to tweak font rendering.

What happens if you disable cleartype and keep HW accel on?
