Question first HDR display questions

I've had an HDR/Dolby Vision capable home theater display for years...but now I'm considering getting one as my PC monitor:

1) is it worth it or is Windows still not good with HDR?

2) do games implement HDR well?

3) do all HDR capable displays offer the ability to turn off HDR (either though Windows settings or through the display settings)?...I can't imagine running HDR all the time in Windows when not gaming

4) has display technology caught up enough with Mini-LED and QD-OLED where HDR is implemented well?

5) if I'm using my Desktop 50% for productivity is OLED worth it- I hear subpixel layout issues prevent it from being really good for Desktop work

I'd research reviews of the monitors you are considering. Basic HDR questions can be handles by Google, but monitor-specific things like text clarity are better researched reading reviews imho. I have the Alienware monitor of choice these days and it is pretty awesome in games utilizing HDR. I would not go for anything other than an OLED or IPS display these days, I don't care how fast the refresh rate is to me once it's over 120HZ it's more than adequate. Text and general Windows use is fine for me, I do use Cleartype.

I turn HDR on and off in Windows 11 using keystrokes it's easier than navigating to the setting every time.

HDR is kind of a pain as when it kicks in your brightness drops and you have to adjust it or be in a darked out room.

do i notice a difference? no

I was aiming for mLED with this laptop but, inventory is crap even direct from CN for displays. I ended up going with a 4K120 panel and it hits 500cd/m which is 1/2 of most mLED panels. There are some cons to mLED th0ugh as well such as blooming but, the increased brightness makes it more usable outdoors.

I'm leaning towards a Mini-LED as I plan to use the display for 50% productivity/work/internet browsing as well as gaming and I've read too many reviews about subpixel layout issues with OLED, QD-OLED which makes it less than ideal as a Desktop display...the problem is that Mini-LED has its own set of issues as far as contrast and motion...so it's a tradeoff...the two I have my eye on are:

1) AOC AG274QZM

2) MSI G274QPF-QD

The MSI one has a quantum dot panel but not really mini-LED (can't find anything on their website that says so). This is reflected by its price too since it's about one third the AOC's price.

Personally, I would get the MSI one. It's easier to live with a cheaper, somewhat flawed device than to spend a lot of money and then regret it coz the experience isn't really what you thought it would be.

yes the MSI one is not Mini-LED, it's just standard ISP...that's exactly what I was thinking in terms of price/value...no current display on the market really checks all the boxes for me...especially since I want to game but also use it as my primary Windows PC...the best OLED and QD-OLED displays have issues with text rendering and they don't get as bright as Mini-LED but Mini-LED also has its own set of issues

so the MSI one seems like a decent display that offers great value for the $$ that I can use as a stop gap until a new display comes out that I feel is worth it

Been using a LG C1 as a monitor for approx 10k hours. I use it for work, play, everything in between. It's hands-down lovely. One of the best decisions I've made.

I do wish I had a 42" C2 instead of the C1 (48") but it wasn't available at the time. I adapted, grew accustomed to it. Changed up my entire workspace to accommodate it.

I don't know why people say it can't do text splendidly. It can and does. It does text just as good as the pair of 32" Ultragear monitors that flank my C1, if not better. The text thing is totally overblown. What you need to do is set the HDMI input to PC on the TV and text goes from awful to perfectly fine. People are free to do this and come back and tell me I'm full of @$!# but I doubt you will.

HDR is great with Win11. I just leave it on 24/7/365. So long as you don't let stuff sit static on your screen indefinitely and change things up here and there the chance of burn in is minimal. I have no icons. No task bar. I switch around to different programs regularly, even putting in hundreds (and hundreds more) of hours into games with a HUD hasn't been a problem.

There's a program called LG Companion someone made, it's found here, it basically turns a LG OLED TV into a monitor -- short of having DisplayPort plugins.

I use a 55" LG G2 as a monitor and I agree, amazing. The text is perfect, everything is perfect on this TV.

KTC M27T20, AOC AGON AG274QZM, AOC AG344UXM, Cooler Master GP27Q are the most popular MiniLED monitors.

There are obviously also 4K displays both in 27 and 32 inch form factors, but they cost north of 800$.
