Did the pencil trick on my Duron 800 last night, and everything seems to be fine...BUT it doesn't seem like Windows likes anything above 9x100. Cooling is still fine--no temperature difference really at all. I think some of the stability issues are related to some windows tweaks I did, but those seem under control now--benchmarks will complete. It won't boot at 9.5x100 at all, and 9x104 started but seemed a little flaky. What should I do to squeeze a little more out of it? Up the voltage, and if so, how much to start out? I was getting 8x104 no problem before--I'd like to at least get 100 MHz higher than that if possible. I'm running a MSI Kt7-Pro2a motherboard, with bios 2.7 and the latest overclocking bios from MSI, and 384mb of generic PC133 memory. Any help you can give this newbie overclocker would be great--it's certainly been a lot of fun!

Yeah... up the voltage.. by one inrement at a time (whatever it is on that board) and see if that helps. You might have capped that chip though too.. I think that around 900 for durons was the cap.. (for that stepping i suppose)..
Maybe someone else can help out more

Okay, I think default Duron voltage is 1.6. My bios has settings for 1.625 and 1.650 (to start out). PC Alert bios monitoring is giving me the current voltage as 1.63V. Should I not bother with the 1.625 and jump straight to 1.65? Also, what's the absolute highest it can take (so i don't go over and burn it out--they may only be $35 but I hate to have to buy another one--good excuse for a Tbird though!)

I upped the core voltage to 1.675, but Bios is registering it as 1.7V. It'll boot now to 9x105 for 945Mhz. What's the absolute limit I can take the Vcore to? it's only 55Mhz to a gig--it'd be great to get to it, but I have my doubts.

I ran my Duron 600 @ 1.85 the whole time I ran it (til I chipped the core...). With a decent heatsink, it handles it.

I put the voltage up to 1.8 and hit 1Ghz (9.5x105), but Windows was unstable, and when I rebooted beeps galore came out of the machine. I reset it down to the default and worked my way back up. At 1ghz temperature was around 100-105 degrees F--not too bad I guess. I've had to put it back at 9.5x100 at 1.75v. My suspicion is that it was the 105Mhz bus that did it in--I remember someone saying their K7tpro2a would start being unstable at 105. Would 10x100 be a better way to try? After seeing it go haywire I'd like a little more advice from people more experienced than I am.
