Health and Fitness

Okay I'll be the first to admit I hated the idea of the sub-forums, and in some ways I still do, such as I believe the garage is okay now, but some car posts should still be allowed in OT, like the non serious discussion ones, like "What's Your Dream Car etc." But, The Garage is getting more traffic and the more specific questions are getting help.

Anyway enough about that, but I believe that if we have the garage then we should also have a fitness forum, as even though OT is a great place to post it and in some cases maybe the mods should be leinant about allowing a certain fitness thread in OT, a fitness forum would be a good idea because:

1. We have a lot of fitness/weightlifting questions each day, a lot of them go unanswered because they are quickly removed from the first page in OT

2. The ones that are answered are usually filled with people not knowing what they are talking about, usually because they would not have clicked the thread in the first place if it was not in OT. Such as the usual "You are weak I can bench 300lbs" post or the "Supplements are a scam that is all" post.

3. The new subdivision would obviously help both the people wanting help and the "helpees" because it would be focused in one place. Also those members who are new in the area would be able to get the info a lot more easily

4. yes I will be the first to admit this is a tech forum, yet other tech forums have this section and a lot of people do not want to be bothered by going to places such as bb.com where they could get flamed for being a n00b and have to learn to a whole new posting procedure. They are also familiar with the members and know who they are getting good help from, not some company rep or another n00b

5. There is a huge interest on here for fitness, especially for the "computer geek" who wants to get into shape, and I think the forum would bring more traffic than even the garage

6. This goes hand in hand with #5. Tallbill's contest would be a great thread to get the section off to it's start. Giving the people who participate in the contest their own little community and area. Think photography section

7. Now that new mods are being selected, the moderation for this forum would not be a problem, and I think Amused would make a great mod for that section, as he is an elite member that has been here for a while, knowledgeable about the subject, has wisdom from his age, and IMO has the qualities of a good mod (he reminds me of oldsmoboat, but less kranky ). Another good mod just for that section would be Special K. And, of course even without new mods it could be done as Red Dawn knows quite a bit about fitness and weightlifting and is already a mod. The forum would need very little moderation anyway as it would be the type of section that is very self moderating, like DC, but with the occasional troll.

8. It will indeed bring in more traffic to the site. People coming to the forums for that one question will see the forum and with the quality of the members here (unlike other places) is not full of 14 year olds will see the wealth of information and overall quality

9. Hell, you could even justify it by adding some threads about fitness tech such as heart monitors etc.

Just thought I would kick this idea out there, as the need seems apparent to me with the community of fitness gurus that is growing here, and the hope that the transformation contest becomes a tradition.

EDIT: Forum name could be Fitness and Nutrition

Not a bad idea at all.

There is a sizable interest in fitness lately. And SVT makes very good points.

Too bad the points are at the top of his head.

Actually, I like the idea.

I like the idea, and I thought about a "Health and Fitness" section when we began the changes.

But I've promised OT that we wouldn't split anything other than YAGT and YACT off ...

Unless this is an overwhelmingly popular idea, I don't think we'll go there.

I'd personally prefer to have this forum exist, but the changes are all about doing the best thing for the membership and providing and environment that is fueled by community. Maybe we'll take a poll in a few months after we see whether or not the Garage will stand or not. But it'd really have to be a very favorable vote.

I see, and I appreciate that the members themselves are able to vote on it. Maybe the next poll can include this idea.

All the gay members love the flexing pics, back off AnandTech Moderator!

Seriously though, that would be a great forum to add.

I think it'd be a great idea. My contest would help kick it off, I'd just make a new thread when the contest starts on the 1st.

From what I've seen, the consensus is that the L&R and Garage off-shoots have been positive additions. I think you'd be hard pressed to find people who would object to a new Health and Fitness forum.

I think it's a great idea.

A place for newbs like me to ask all of our workout/diet questions and tap into the knowledgeable membership, without it getting lost in OT!

Plus the quality of discussions would be greatly improved. Even if it got minimal traffic, a user could post a question and get honest results fairly quickly without asshats coming in posting "ZOMG, I can 493 pushups".

I personally hated the change from one big OT forum to LR and The Garage, but in time I've come to like both. I think most members are like me and just don't like change, but eventually realize it's been a good thing.

I would like a separate Fitness and Nutrition forum, as I hate going to muscleheadforums to ask questions, and I know there are quality people already here that participate in the knowledge-sharing culture on AT. TallBill's contest would be the perfect way to kick off such a new forum.

There likely wouldn't be as much backlash for this as there was for The Garage and especially L&R. Everyone has cars, and everyone has love/relationship woes, but not everyone exercises or eats right. Most don't, actually. I think the people who stand to benefit from this would actually prefer it be separate from OT anyway.

Took the words out of my... er... off my keyboard.

Also, L&R and The Garage were so cotroversial becuase YACT and YAGT had been hallmarks of OT for years, whereas fitness threads have been more isolated and individual. (ie: There is no YAFitnessT trend yet).

But as others have pointed out, the number of fitness threads are growing, especially with TallBill's contest (in which I'm a contestant), and YAFT may soon come into regular usage without it's own forum.

In short: If we're going to make one, let's make it now before YAFT gets entrenched in OT.

I definitely support this motion. Once computer people get muscles, who will be able to stand in their way?
