Just switched on the PC.. and it won't boot.

keep on getting a disk read error occured.. press ctrl alt del to restart

The o/s is winxp.

I've checked the HD out with maxtors utility, no bad sectors or any problems with the drive..

I've also got my cd of winxp, and tried to boot from that, but it won't go past the stage of

"setup is inspecting your computer hardware" - it just hangs...

So, what can I do, to fix the boot area of this drive, as Im guessing thats whats foobar!

check to make sure your IDE connectors are in properly.
also make sure jumpers are still correctly set.

Lol, thanx for that.. if the jumpers weren't correctly set or the IDE connectors werent in, then the disk wouldn't be working full stop.

This isn;t a brand new pc, its been working for at least 18 months..

im gonna try the m$ boot disks now, to see if they get farther than the cd-rom.

Anyone else have some suggestions?

Believe me, I have tried everything to get this working, so Im posting here as a last resort

Oh, and the disk works fine, when i slave it on another machine.

Is this the only drive on the IDE channel? Is it connected to the last connector on the cable?

Try simply removing the jumper instead of setting it to master. You could also try CS (cable select). YMMV...

Did you guys really read my posts?

Does not matter anyway, im going to take the drive off my primary machine, then put it on as a slave on my secondary machine..

.. copy off all the files i need.. put it back on my primary machine, as the primary drive, then re-ghost the disk...

.. hopefully it should be sorted then..

Im still surprised at the other posts tho.... :Q
