The people I work with aren't using any network computers.
Quite a few of them still use dial-up in their homes.
A floppy is an effective way to get them the information.
I don't want to be on anyone's "mail list" that I don't have to be. I don't need more spam.

They're not necessary, just terribly handy. Want to make a bootable CD-R or USB flash drive? Guess what the boot image is based on? Yup, floppy.

So instead of pirating WinImage or some other program that can read/write ISO files, downloading a floppy image from somewhere, removing the stuff you don't need/want, inserting the stuff you do need/want, creating a CD-R or USB flash drive from the floppy boot image.....why not save seven steps and just use the freaking floppy that all of these other technologies are emulating, anyway?

Bootable USB flash drives are a royal PITA and are not universally compatible with all BIOS. There are at least three different methods to create a bootable USB flash drive, depending on how many of the other methods you've already tried without success.

Alternatives may exist with faster transfer rates and storage capacity, but nothing approaches the ease and guaranteed universality of the floppy.

Let sumerize it this way.

If some one "Hates" Floppy Drives, then it is a problem (it is Not a technological problem, but it is a problem since Hate and Anger are always problematic).

Otherwise what the big deal is? The sub $10 that the Floppy drive cost?

nope. haven't used one in over 5 years. my mobo (asus a7n8x-x) is a bit old to get a BIOS update now anyway. i think i still have one from a computer we stripped not long ago. either way, you don't need it. you can include it if you want to, but you can do anything with a thumbdrive that you can do with a floppy. and a thumb drive isn't ugly.

IMO, the CD and DVD disks are more problematic than floppies, and they should go first, making room for Solid State USB drives and Memory Cards.

I can put a floppy in my shirt's pocket, but I can't do it with the CD or DVD because of its size!

And then I have to handle it like I used to handle Vinyl Records (anybody remembers THAT...?), unable to place them on my desk without looking for a case, or they will get scratched, which will make them unusable.

Soo.... OUT with the disks in all the shapes and forms, IN with the Solid State data storage!

I could go along with that

Hate is such a strong word...

But it is such a strong hate! (I guess...)

The usefulness outweighs the annoyance, IMO.

My newer lappies have no floppies. No problem. My desktops have floppies and LS-120s. That's because I have drawers full of floppies and LS-120 disks with useful data going back to the late 80s.

Yes - floppies are obsolete - but there's nothing wrong with having a portable USB floppy drive if you have a use for it.

Bottom line, any new machine I get will NOT have a floppy drive - but I will probably awlays have the capability to read from drawers full of stored 3.5" disks.

I usually get one like the Mitsumi that does double duty as a card reader.

I think my floppy died...no access lights...nothing happens when I insert a floppy & try to open (says to insert a floppy). I'm getting power...tested the cable w/a meter. I'm assuming my cable's ok or the pc wouldn'tve recognized it.
Will I be able to boot from floppy w/that Mitsumi?
Thanks.

Since I'm still with XP, nothing pisses me more off when I have to press F6 to install RAID drivers and cannot do so without a floppy. Maybe after I move to Vista I will finally get rid of my internal floppy but keep my USB one.

Yes, because it is a floppy drive. It just happens to also have card reader slots.
The floppy still connects via the floppy cable. But the reader ports are connected internally to a MB USB header.
