Flying aircraft in Battlefield 2

I've always been pissed with the aircraft in BF2 cause I get owned by them yet as soon as I hop into one I pretty much crash. I've been experimenting with my 360 gamepad (which when set to Joystick in XBCD, is correctly detected in BF2) and kb/mouse setups but can't really fly yet. I find jets a little easier than helicopters.

So given I don't have a joystick (may get one in the future but I want to use the best I can now), do I use a kb+mouse config, kb only, or 360 config? And what button assignment with those? Also any sensitivity or factor settings would be helpful.

Ive been experimenting with singleplayer so I can keep practicing, but it'd save me a lot of time if players could share the configs that work ok for them. And for osme reason I cant ever get a SP64 mod to work.. so I'm stuck with the 16player ones.

Lol, you don't want to get 64 players to work on Single Player...

Anyways, I suck at lot at flying but I own a lot at ground! No vehicles for me!

I like the choppers better than the jets... guess that's why I dont have my joystick plugged in anymore.

Oh, KB + M for me. Default configuration.

Jian_10 is my fav BF2 plane and i use keyboard and joystick to fly a plane. I have a very good Air kill ratio. Can take out a chopper easy

It's simple. Don't fly jets. They're only there for the ladies.

I second that notion!

i disagree. I own w/ it, helping my clan/team win many many many games. It's effective, and a tool that should be used when you have a good pilot on your team.

I typically play on "no fly" servers, and I can't wait for Infantry Only mode in v1.4.

If you go over to the total battlefield forums, you can see hundreds of whiney pilots just like you complaining that there are too many 24/7 Karkand servers, and that once infantry only comes out, there won't be any servers for you jet jockies to rack up ridiculous scores on.

I say bring on the death of piloting in BF2.

KB + M for me. I think all the vehicles are somewhat balanced in this game, except for armor spawn camping.

Well I guess I'll try more w/o the gamepad. I couldn't do anything in a helicopter with kb+m ( with KB only or 360 pad I could takeoff a little bit) but my friend jumped on for the first time ever playing BF2 and he flew decently for like a minute with the kb+m.

Jets are a little easier, and overpowered it sounds? Well tell me how to fly 'em! I've been gettign owned by cheap crap in this game for a year, I wanna be able to take part a little bit so I can get more than like 30 points a round.

So KB+M is the way to go with the default config? Any changes to sensitivity?

wow, your attack is unwarranted.
ok, where in my post does it indicate that I'm whining about anything? I do play on those infantry only servers, except my computer cannot handle it. i play airplane maps because my computer can handle the load. Down on the ground, I can barely pull 10-20 fps, so it's unplayable. Well, recently I got an upgrade, so that will change .

Another thing, why the hell are they complaining about too many karkand servers, lol? I have absolutely no problems whatsoever finding diverse server that have a wide range of maps. Then again, the clan i'm in has a wake-island-only server that I have to mod/play on so hehe.

I'm looking foward to the infantry-only maps as well, since it gets rid of people battling for jets and stuff.

I hate jets and i hate the people who can actually fly them even more!! lol.

Couldnt manage it with mouse and keyboard, i would always be the one who tked for the jet and then ended up in the sea a few minutes later.

So, to combat my seemingly piss poor flying skills i buy a saitek cyborg evo joystick! Yea! Ill show those ground hogs how we do things in the us airforce! But still, i end up having to crash into tanks etc to try and kill them, cant hit crap, or fly very well. In fact the mouse and keyboard was easier.

I'm okay with people piloting choppers but not jets. Too many TKs for jets

The only changes I make to default, is reverse the pitch controls, and move the eject button closer.

Getting a little OT here, everyone is still using the 1.3 patch right?
(like no one is using the 1.4 beta yet right?)

(i just reinstalled windows and I'm reinstalling BF2 for the first time in ages)
(i'm also trying out that POE mod)

I use kb/m to fly a jet. They arent that hard to fly. I can fly um around no problem, Only problem I have with jets is as soo as I get in one. It seems like people are honing in on me to take me out, and I think I've had maybe one kill ever in a jet.

Eh... I havent had much luck with aircraft even with quite a few hours of trying different configs and whatnot. I think I'll just be more aggressive in getting tanks (everytime I get one, or even a APC, I get a lot of points usually) and continue my infantry warfare.

Choppers are pretty fun, but planes tend to be a bit harder. I can either fly or shoot in a plane, but not both lol.
Unfortunately my joystick isn't working well anymore or else I'd be using it, but the mouse and kb are much easier
to use with BF2 than they were for BF1942, at least that's what I've found

man i don't get it, i find jets to be 10000times easier to rack up kills/points than in a heli. I can fly the heli fine, but it definitely took a lot more getting used to than a jet. I can't do any of those crazy tricks I've seen other heli pilots do, like circle around a target area really fast, and his gunner just racks up the kills.

It's much easier to get shot down in a helicopter than in a jet.

I'm much better at flying a helicopter than a jet, but I find both to be pretty cheap compared to pounding the ground like a real soldier.

I have been mostly a tank whore until recently when I really started getting into jets and choppers. They can be extremely frustrating while learning the ropes but after a while it becomes second nature and you really start to have alot of fun. I fly with joystick for both and would never even think about trying kb/mouse config.

With choppers they key is circle strafing. Very hard to hit something circling around you only exposing the low profile of the front. I'm getting pretty good at this now. And of course if you don't have a gunner or have a gunner who doesn't know how to use TVm's you might as well just crash into a tree.

Jets for me are much harder- I can fly them great but my bombs rarely hit and people seem to know how to evade my missiles and I don't know how to do the same. What I like to do is fly around in bombing mode even when hutning other planes so as to not alert them to my rpesence. I try to sneak up close behind them, switch to missile mode and let a couple rip as soon as it locks. The problem is the other jet will just bank hard up or to the side and my missiles miss. This happens like 80% of the time that the other guy banks hard, especially if they are in a F18 or J10 but it happens many times even vs. F35. But the frustrating thing is if I try the same thing, like if I hear my lock alarm sound I quickly switch to rear camera mode and if I see an enemy jet I quickly bank as hard as I can up or the a side, but yet their missiles almost always hit me, even if I am in a J10. I really don't understand why, I have tried this both using afterburner and not using it, with pretty much same results. What is the special trick people are doing that lets them evade missiles so easily? I'll stay on someone's tail really well, fire my missiles at what I believe are good opportunities yet many times I am left firing all 6 without a kill. It may be the way I am firing if it's not something special the other pilot is doing to evade.

Am I suppsoed to point my crosshairs right at the plane when firing missiles? Or lead them slightly? When a target plane banks I ten to lead them, maybe that's why ? Maybe I should always be pointing my crosshairs directly on the enemy plane?
