Food allergies?

I personally have a seafood allergy, and I was wondering how many other ATOTers out there also have seafood, or other food allergies. Personally I carry an epi-pen with me at all times, and find I am frequently worried about cross contamination at restaurants. Is this fear justified? For others with allergies; do you always make a note to the chef about your allergy regardless of what you are ordering?

From what I've seen, your fear is definitely justified. I personally have no allergies of any kind as far as I can tell. Pass the shrimp!

i have mild food allergies (itchy/swelling tongue/minor hives) to the following (and possibly others):

shrimp
bananas
apples
plums
cherries
almonds

my daughter has a serious peanut allergy for which we always carry around an epi-pen and alert waitstaff and inquire as to preparation of foods.

My brothers both grew up with food allergies. They were allergic to almost everything, and had to go in for regular allergy shots. Eating the food caused low grade fever and headache/migraines.

I don't think seafood cross contamination is all that likely, I'd worry more about say, peanuts (peanut oil gets used a lot). But I think it's perfectly reasonable to carry the epi around.

I'm allergic to tree nuts. I rarely eat baked goods that people bring to work or parties unless I know who made them and they tell me it's safe. I'm pretty sure I'd have to eat a fair amount to be in dangerous territory, but even just shaking hands with someone who's recently eaten them will cause my eyes to water and itch and throat to get irritated - it's just not pleasant.

In a restaurant if something I ordered contains nuts and it wasn't stated on the menu, I'll send it back.

You should always ask up front. Not every ingredient in a dish is generally listed on the menu - it would take a lot of print space to do that. If you have a food allergy, be proactive about it.

I'm allergic to shrimp, lobster and crab but it's not serious that I need to carry epi-pen with me. I don't get any reactions from cross contamination either and have also eaten a load of shrimp by mistake... it wasn't a great day for me but far from needing to call 911.

i have developed a nasty allergy to melons and i fricken love melons!!!. i can not eat my favorite melons like cantaloupe or watermelon, honeydew anymore. last 4th of july i had watermelon just a slice about a inch thick and i almost had my wife drive me to the ER. it did something to my throat, i could breathe fine but my vocal cords were like paralyzed i could only talk in a airy whisper that lasted about a hour. other melons make my lips swell. tingly.

avocados make my lips tingly so i just deal with that.

I'm allergy to many types of fish. My mouth/lips swallows up slightly but nothing too major. I still avoid them though. No big loss because I never liked fish to begin with.

What I'm saying is if the menu goes on about a delicate mix of field greens with crumbled feta cheese, ripe grape tomatoes and house made croutons with a light balsamic vinagrette, I would expect it to contain essentially that stuff, not that stuff and plus a pile of shredded almonds all over the place.

I've also had times where either the waiter was wrong or they've gotten the order messed up. Most recently I was given hazlenut waffles instead of plain. It's not like there were chunks of nuts on top of them, they were pureed in the batter. No real way to know, but I asked for plain, they told me they were plain, and they were wrong. Being proactive generally means picking shit apart and not eating anything suspect.

Just some fish? Some more than others? That's kind of odd, which ones do you know are better or worse?

It's actually quite common to only be allergic to some fish and not others, however there is a greater risk of developing an allergy to all fish later down the line. Personally I am not sure which fish I am allergic to (or if I am allergic to them all) so I just avoid it all together. I don't really feel that I'm missing out.

I've had allergic reactions to some salmon, halibut and eel. Other times I've had the same types of fish, cooked in the same way and didn't have allergic reactions. No allergy so far to shell fish (shrimp, crab etc). I don't know what it is so I just avoid all fish now.

I'm mildly allergic to some foods - but I have no ideas which ones. The only symptom is usually slight swelling in my hands. I have to eat a LOT of shrimp for it to bother me. I had a small reaction to some weird pepperoni once I think. I have a pen but never carry it.

Of course, even if I have a mild reaction and I take advil or excedrin for another reason, it causes many bad things to happen. But it's easier to avoid advil and excedrin than the allergies.

I am not sure if I'm allergic to shellfish, but I know for a fact that I am not allergic to mollusks (like mussels), but I tend to avoid all seafood due to the risk of cross contamination. Maybe a bit overboard, but in my mind better safe than sorry. I have not eaten any fish since I was a little kid, so I have no idea what kind, or how severe of a reaction it would cause.

I have a huge intolerance for foods with naturally (or unnaturally) high amounts of glutamates (glutamic acid)

I cannot eat tomatoes, mushrooms or parmesan cheese or aged beef anymore. It takes about 45 min before I either lose the entire contents of my stomach, break out in horrible hives, get a migraine or some combination of them.

I have a dairy allergy. I'm also mildly allergic to a dozen other things (ex. high fructose corn syrup gives me an instant, pounding headache - in ketchup, bread, etc.). I was sick my whole life up until about 3 years ago when I found out it was dairy. Then the last few years have been finding the others - it was a real struggle because I had no idea why I felt like crap all the time, and those allergy test with the needles didn't show anything (because it was all internal reactions). Now I can get through an entire day without being fatigued or having a migraine or an asthma attack. It's awesome!

Eating out mostly isn't worth it. There are only a few places I can safely go. If I don't know what the ingredients are, I won't risk it - I'll be violently ill for 2 or 3 days if I even having something cooked in butter, plus all of the associated muscle fatigue, headaches, breathing problems, and so on. There are a couple places I go regularly where the people accommodate me because I'm a regular, but I hate being the holdup at a lunch rush because I have special requirements.

If I'm going out to dinner, I'll usually call ahead and ask about allergies. Most restaurants are pretty good about doing stuff like dry grilling instead of using butter or whatever, and I've found the more expensive the restaurant, the better they are about cooking your food in a certain way. But the bottom line is you never really know, so you're always taking that risk.

A lot of restaurants are getting better about listing food allergies or at least accommodating them. A number of restaurants around here now advertise gluten-free menus, a couple do dairy-free, and Vegan places are always safe for me. Just gotta do your research and be willing to call ahead. I worked in the restaurant business for a number of years and production is all about go go go - most places are super busy and can't guarantee (even though they might say they do) that you won't get cross-contamination. A lot of chefs are under-paid and over-worked and won't really pay attention to things because they have other, easier meals to get out the door. So I have a select few places that I go to and very rarely try someplace new, haha.

Probably better safe than sorry when it comes to allergies. Reports of strong allergic reactions scare me

I had actually avoided fish even before I developed this allergy, maybe there is some physiological basis to my picky eating :hmm:

Wow that's quite the story! Glad to hear that you managed to figure out your allergy and are feeling better now. I used to have a dairy allergy as well, fortunately I did grow out of it. Do you find that not going out to eat affects your social life? Often time's my friends want to go out to different restaurants, but I will avoid it because you just *never know*.

I had the opposite problem - my body was constantly craving dairy products because I wasn't absorbing the vitamins and stuff in it, so I was drinking a ton of milk every day. I still miss dairy products a lot (I used to work at a pizza restaurant! argg) but they have pretty good substitutes for just about anything you can make with milk, so it's not a big deal.

Yeah soy (love/hate it) can be good sub for milk. Plus you are joining the millions (or more accurately billions) of Chinese who already drink it haha. Seriously, don't worry about the alternative disappearing anytime soon.

I know some people say "be proactive" yatta yatta, well most restaurant managers don't understand how serious allergies are. And agree, waiters/waitresses are almost always clueless unless you get a good one. This is obviously YMMV.

I was at Mongolian Grill. Saw they added "Thai" to the ingredients available = anyone with peanut allergies is now fucked. I asked, insisted and emphasized I need an allergy bowl for cooking. "Ok ok" they wave me down. Mind you, "allergy bowl" is something that is very clearly advertised with signs.

I get my cooked stuff, bring it to my table. Take one bite - nope definitely peanuts. Fortunately for me, for a small ingestion (one bite) the worst is swollen lip and itchy throat first, before the serious shit. They refunded my money and gave me coupons - but I won't be stepping into that place again. None of my friends are allergic to anything so I had to wait for everyone else to finish...but I can guarantee you, most non-allergy people don't take this stuff seriously.
