You mentioned very little about how you brush or what you brush with. Could that be the problem?

im supposed to brush them? damn.

if acid is bad, what are those energy drinks (which have such an acid-y taste) doing to my teeth I wonder?

Tooth decay is caused by a specific bacteria, streptococcus mutans.

Plaque is their home.

They eat sugars, and secrete acids as their waste...

I think there's a correlation between the dentists house payments and the number of cavities you have.

yeh, i agree there. the guy seemed almost happy, thats why i wanted to punch him. im definitely getting a second opinion before i go back.

Of course he was happy. How much will they be $150 each?

When was the last dentist checkup? I would really get a second opinion. The dentist is most likely ripping you off by saying the smallest hole needs to be filled.

Remember that dentists are as bad as mechanics. They will steal your money, don't trust them.

Dentists are FAR from the highest paid profession.

Why would you not go to the dentist if your covered? Twice a bloody year is all they ask for less than an hour. Lesson learned for you I hope...

Get a second opinion!

After a move cross country, I went to a new dentist who told me I had a dozen cavities or some such nonsense. Checked with another dentist who told me the first dentist had mistaken my deep crevases for cavities.

The problem with second opinions is everytime you start a file at a new office, they charge you some rediculous amount to do a full mouth x-ray. Last time I went, they had me do that, then they had the "diagnosis" dentist just read off to an assistant all the work I needed done. It was very intimidating and she turned quite mean. You can tell she takes pleasure in it. C3 filling, D1 cap, D2 porcelein inlay. WTF?

Same thing happened to me today when I visited the dentist. I haven't had a single cavity in my life, and my dentist usually compliments me for my dental hygiene, yet today he managed to find a cavity that I will be getting fixed tomorrow morning. I swear, when it comes to dental hygiene, you just can't win.

to make things even better, i just gave my two weeks notice last friday, so i dont know what my healthcare situation is going to be (need to research c.o.b.r.a.).

only good thing is that most of the cavities are minor, so no root canals or anything like that. but still, wtf!!! :|

A healthy diet is nearly irrelvant. How have you been taking care of your teeth? Do you floss daily? Do you brush 3 times a day?

Sugar being bad for teeth is an overhyped myth. ANY starchy foods can cause decay. In fact, bread is worse than sugar.

Also, you haven't been to a dentist in 3 years. That means you haven't had regular cleanings. That also means that mild decay that could have been merely sealed now must be filled.

not including executives or pro athletes...who's next??

Dentists make in the order of $100k a year. Even though you decided to suddenly qualify your statements, that salary would be matched or exceeded by a number of doctors, pretty much anyone in upper management, many banking employees, some pilots, heck, even some professors when you take research grants and such into account. And that's just for starters.

get a second opinion. if you haven't changed your habits, there's no reason to be 14 cavaties. sounds like he needs to make the payment on his boat.

Which self-respecting dentist urges you to make an x-ray IF his only responsability in your mouth is dental hygiene (that excludes treatening of tooth position and chirurgical interferences)?

Two of my friends got a lot of cavities at once, too. One keept munching citrus fruits all the time without even rinsing his mouth with water afterwards, so his 13 cavities were hardly a surprise to me. The other one just didn't visit his dentist for around five years and let his discipline slip I guess. 14 cavities.

So if you're really a minimalist, brush your teeth at least in the evening after your last meal. That's the most important time because you don't produce much saliva while sleeping.
