What is it with people these days and their NEED for a quiet PC. It seems that every Video card, VGA cooler, Case, CPU HS FAN, and Hard drive review has a list of "cons" that complain about it being "to loud". I dont know maybe it's just me, but personally I don't care how loud my computer is, as long as it doesn't vibrate across my floor.

Maybe some people keep it in their room, and try to sleep with it on?

Also, even the slightest humm will effect your hearing over time... refrigerators, tv's, ect.

Most people, don't care.

The people that REALIZE there are quiet solutions, tend to care.

If you had the choice of a quiet, or a loud PC, which would you pick?

Of course if only those 2 options are available i'd take quiet over loud.

But realistically, would you want loud but more performance or quiet but less? I'd pick loud

my goal has always been to go as quiet as possible, until lowering the noise starts to affect performance (ie: increases the heat substantially).

I draw the line at fanless PSU's. heh.

Ok, look at the nv Silencer 5 for example. In my opinion, it's a GREAT designed GPU cooler. I also believe that it works just fine. BUT, replace that "silent" fan with a 6000prm monster, and that cooler would be twice as effective. And also, I sleep with my 10 Fan PC in my room every night.

"What is it with people these days and their NEED for a quiet PC."

You'll understand when you're older.

but if half as effective is getting the job done fine, why bother going with something louder?

Becuase you can cool more and over clock more. Isn't that the main reason in a cooling upgrade??

And as for addragyn, wtf? Age has nothing to do with sound level preference, unless your like 90.

If you havent noticed, people are different. Some people can put up with loud noises, some like quiet PCs. Deal with it please.

sure, but it sucks when you can't hear the noise from the game you're playing over your 6 tornados

Some people like quiet pc's because they do more than just play games on it. You know, some of us actually WORK on our computers. You know, actually do something productive and useful on it? And it's kinda hard to concentrate on the database you're putting together when all you hear is the whine from a loud pc.

I have both slient and super duper Overclocks. Water and large radiators are your friend.

edit some recents:

6800GT - 448/1200
5900FX 500/950
Mobile xp 2600 @2700
A64 3000@2560

etc etc etc no noise just $ to get there

I don't like computers that sound like dustbusters, but I'm not overly sensitive either.
I always listen to music while messing around with my computer, and so long as the computer doesn't make more noise than the speakers, I'm fine with it.

Some people would rather listen to the sound coming out of their speakers than the sound coming out of their computer case.

How many people don't like being at a movie theatre and hearing the HVAC going? How many people like watching a DVD while listening to the DVD spin in the player?

Better yet, maybe some us just find HHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMM annoying? I have to deal with it every day at work due to a dual processor machine under my desk but prefer not to.

You must be relatively young. When one gets older, peace and quiet are at a premium. I used to like loud everything when I was much younger and it didn't bother me. Take cars for example I used to like 454's screaming down the highway, but now a nice Mercedes Benz gives me the same thrill with it being whisper quiet. To each his own.

Pavica Computers - Cheaper. Better. Louder. For no damn good reason. Period.

Fixed that for ya.

There comes a point of diminishing returns on both ends of speed vs silence. I'm biased towards the quieter end of things. For example, I could run my XP at 2.42GHz with a 7000rpm screamer fan cooling it ... or at 2.0GHz with a nice hushed 2500.

The stupid-silent PCs are also good just for the reaction of "Is that thing on?"

I'm all for quiet.I don't want to hear my vacuum cleaner while I'm playing online games or surfing the net or watching TV.
On the other hand I'm all for efficient cooling too.
Finding the correct combination and compromising seems the be an art form that many computer enthusiasts, including myself, are persuing.
Of course if you're an extreme overclocker, qieting a system is probably not high on your agenda.
Vice versa for those seeking the ultimate silent PC,overclocking is the devil since system/component cooling would be compromised.
There are several decent solutions available as far case,HSF,fan,PSU combinations go.
You are however reduced to only a few selections if you want an aesthetically appearing case(opinions vary just like fart odors) and want decent cooling and silence with a small margin for overclockability also.
It all boils down to your personal priorities.
1.Appearance
2.Cooling
3.Sound
4.Function
5.Expandibility
6.Layout
7.Size
8.Construction/Materials
9.Internal goodies i.e. removable drive cages,sliders,grommets,removables,filters etc
10.External goodies i.e. front ports,lids,doors,lighting,windows etc.

I have yet to see a perfect case out there that fits eceryones needs/desires.I question wether it's even possible.Given the vast array of cases offered these days I can say that many different peoples' priorities are being addressed by the case manufacturers who are definately profiting.Wich means that all these priorities are valid although some might find anothers priorities for case choosing nonsense.

My personal priorites fall with function over form, but that's my personal opinion based upon the price paid for my components and personal budget.Form falls down the list for me because I view a computer case as a functional object and not as a fashion show exhibit. It sits under my desk unseen. My preferences are for it to be unheard, efficient, functional.
